JJ Watt to be released
Sorry, just realized I wrote "trading" in the body of my original post. Should have said "signing".Jobu wrote: ↑Fri Feb 12, 2021 5:58 pmSorry, I misunderstood.
Keep Tuitt, bring in JJ if the numbers work...now you’ve got your quality depth. In a perfect world...
3 Watts = 3 “Joules” for Ben’s hand?

Why? What did he do or didn't do this time?
Secure NHALS early and then go deep into the PLAYOFFS.
And the sad part is, the poaster who said TJ will probably follow JJ to a good team next year is probably dead-on.smithessmokin wrote: ↑Fri Feb 12, 2021 5:49 pmHe’s said he doesn’t care about the money, he just wants to go to a team that wins.
We'll cut the lesser Watt, and someone will sign him with brother JJ with an eye to get TJ next year as a FA.

DraftKings has the Steelers as the favorites to land JJ.

So, would we move JJ to OLB, or cut/trade Tuitt?

@Steelperch JJ Watt will sign with PIT or GB on a cheap deal, unless the Ravens or another team absolutely offer him so much he can't refuse.
But I have it on very good authority it's PIT/GB the favorites, Baltimore is making a hard sell but Watt actually told them the money would have to be substantially more to even consider a third option.

Can he play Center? Moving to OLB? Or just edge rush specialist platooning with Highsmith to fill Dupree’s role. I’d be happy to see him here, it just doesn’t make sense. Why lose a comp pick? Why sign another old guy when so many young guys are FA’s. Even after Pouncey retired they’re still over the cap. Why leave the Texans for a team that will be the Texans a year from now when Ben retires. And how much money is he willing to sign for? $2 million? $10 million?bradshaw2ben wrote: ↑Sat Feb 13, 2021 12:40 am@Steelperch JJ Watt will sign with PIT or GB on a cheap deal, unless the Ravens or another team absolutely offer him so much he can't refuse.

Perch, stop being a cold shower bro.
Since he was released I didn’t think it factors into the comp analysis?Steelperch wrote: ↑Sat Feb 13, 2021 12:50 amCan he play Center? Moving to OLB? great point
I have a hard time believing JJ will come here just to play with his brother.
Unless he thinks the Steelers with their huge cap issues can somehow load up for a Super Bowl run, what reason would he have to come here?

Not brother, both brothers. You wouldnt want to play with your brothers, on a team that was 11-0 before the wheels came off, how cool would that be for a tight knit family. I guess it may depend on what TJ and Dereks assessment of the team is, if TJ is telling JJ, look man, we were right there except for injuries or what have you, ya i could see JJ wanting to play here.
A 1-yr deal, if Ben is coming back, wouldn't be that crazy to believe. A few right moves and they could be in contention next year, and JJ could be one of those moves.Greeksteel wrote: ↑Sat Feb 13, 2021 3:21 amNot brother, both brothers. Then they all could jump ship if that's Ben's last year. No way could I see JJ sticking around for the Mason Rudolph experience, and unless they tagged TJ he'd probably follow.

Lots of reasons to think he ends up in Pittsburgh. You have to think it is at least his top choice given the opportunity to suit up with his brothers for the first time in their lives. Sure he wants a ring, but as I heard someone say last night, the Watt's believe they can win anywhere.
I do know a defensive front rotation of Watt, Watt, Heyward, Tuitt, Alualu, and Highsmith is pretty formidable. May be a cheaper option to lessen the blow of losing Dupree.
Plus, I don't think anyone is all that excited about next year, it would make business sense for Rooney given jersey sales, etc.
But I am sure somehow the Steelers will screw this up and he will be in Buffalo or Green Bay.

The late great Kevin Greene came to the Steelers at age 31 and provided an intense, supersonic storm of energy and the non stop motor that made those defenses relentless and great.
From his 3 years with the Steelers, he had 36 sacks and 88 total from age 31 and on. Unheard of production for an after 31 career. May never see it again.
Can JJ be that same guy for the Steelers at a similar point in his career?
JJ is 31, will be 32 in a month. Tho he has had more health issues than Greene at this point in their careers, i would look at JJ as a player the Steelers could use in a less than full time roll that would give him a better shot to stay healthy, productive and disruptive.
Jj is a few months older than Cam Heyward. Cam has been a physical freak who plays every game, and is a 85-90% snap guy. Tuit is also a high snap count guy, 75-85%.
I think with a nice rotation, you can keep JJ in the 65-70% range, maybe less, while reducing the load on Cam and Tuit.
A dominant defensive line and front 4-5-6 is how you disrupt offenses. JJ would be another guy with football smarts and instincts that brings intangibles to the team. Another guy that's aware of the clock in the QBs head, a guy that looks to batt down passes as part of an offensive-defensive approach.
Maybe, somehow, .....you bring back Alualu on vet min deal. As he has been a phenomenal back up defensive lineman in his stint hear, and has remained healthy in his stay and for his career.
I know, i know... i'm putting together the cardiac kids of a Dline.... but Tyson hes never played less than 14 games in his 11 year career and 62 of 64 in Pittsburgh, and is just one of those guys that has a body that stays healthy.
Cam, Tuit, JJ, Tyson, Buggs, Carlos Davis as your 6 Defensive lineman. TJ, Highsmith, Ola and draft pick as your 4 OLB.
Anyway.
JJ Watt has made over $100 million in his 10 year career. Probably a ton more with endorsements knowing the personality and larger than life fihgure he been down in Texas and during his NFL career.
He may just take a PS / Watt friendly deal to play at least 1 year with his brothers, while having a one year opportunity to play for a SB with a pretty talented roster with other HOF players.
Is there room for a one year deal in the $4-5 miliiin range or an incentive laden contract with AFC champ and or SB champ bonuses?
Then again, he may sign a 3 year, $45-50 million deal with a $12-15 million signing bonus with GB ....or Baltimore..... and go down with a back injury week 3. Damn, that was the alternate ending to that nice story that i dont like but forced myself to include.

I can't see Derek coming back on that contract. I think it's more likely JJ signs w PIT than it is Derek plays on his current deal in 2021.

Unfortunately, this.
But for yucks-
lets for a moment, pretend he signs. The FO makes one more, All In, push, before Ben retires.
Where are you playing him?
I absolutely wouldn't want to trade or bench Tuitt, but he's the only player with trade value on the DLine.
Neither Tuitt or Heyward are 3 4 NT. I suppose you could potentially put JJ at WS OLB (less coverage responsibility)
Do you run a 4 man front and with Tuitt and Heyward as interior DLine and the Watts as DEs?? If so how do you position your LBs?
Can Bush be a 43 inside backer?? Not sure he's even close to big enough. Could you move Hightower to 43 inside and Bush to 43 OLB
Anyway- you see the quandary

JJ and TJ could be the bookends on passing situations.
That would allow Highsmith to function in the same capacity he did prior to the Dupree injury.
Having JJ Watt on the defense is much more trouble for the opponents than it is for the Steelers.

I sure hope you are right. I just think it would be cool to have all three on the team. And he obviously would make our defense even better.
I know Ben shit the bed in the latter part of the year. But he had some really great games too. If we can assemble some type of running game, maybe our offense isn't so terrible and we can compete with that defense.
