Here is a YouTube link and I know the play is all over Twitter.

The biggest screw up is presnap read. They motion people not just for fun, but to give the QB clues to the coverage. When Austin motions, nobody follows. It’s zone. Not only that, they have a numbers advantage on the left side. Kenny never once looks that way and vacates a clean pocket for no real reason.

Austin is waving both hands lol
Here’s the full play. It’s in a FB group I am in, but the post itself is public.
https://fb.watch/oJEBWX0Ei2/
Notes:
*Austin motioning exposes it is zone
*Austin is even MORE open than I thought and it’s a sure TD if Pickett throws it on time…Pickens’ route was actually very good and disrupted BOTH defenders who could have had a shot at Austin.
*If there are any issues with the route combo, it might be that Austin ran a little too long before turning around so it might have been incomplete, but Kenny has no way of knowing this at the point he should have thrown the pass.
Where Perch was wrong:
*In real time, Washington wasn’t open
*Najee was way too slow getting out in his pattern…a dump off would not have worked. Najee sucks.
You know what this play reminds me of?
Roethlisberger to Miller against Dallas in 2008…and Austin was WAY more wide open on his route with a clear path to the EZ than Miller was because the other routes didn’t disrupt the defender that could get to Miller as much as Pickens disrupted the defenders that could have gotten to Austin.
But Ben didn’t hesitate…went right to Heath.

But again, even if not, no excuses for missing it pre-snap.

After watching the full play, he clearly missed Austin.
Definitely wide open.
Najee was not gonna score. Probably would have tried to hurdle the guy.
Washington was open for half a split second. That's a pick waiting to happen.

Every QB misses open guys,
Pickett misses them all the time because he’s not doing any progressions.
I don’t believe he was always this bad…I do believe coaching has ruined him by harping on him to play it safe and avoid negative plays.
To what degree coaching has ruined him and to what degree his brain just can’t process what he is seeing, I don’t know.

By the way, we should remember something that makes this play all the more bad.
Kenny's ankle WAS INJURED ALREADY.
So him using his legs was something that wasnt going to end well the more he did it.

I can't disagree with any of this and that's why I think Kenny's been trained to not throw outside the numbers in the red zone.jeemie wrote: ↑Mon Dec 04, 2023 3:12 pmEvery QB misses open guys,

Play it safe and take the field goal if necessary but look to throw inside the numbers first and dump it off if you have to.
He didn't even look at Austin and while ultimately that's on Pickett, I don't think in this particular offense, they want outside throws, unless they are basically WR screens, in a compressed area such as being inside the 10 yard line.
They're looking to avoid pick 6's and devastating turnovers.

There's the play in question. Didn't even look that way. Why. EDT, someone posted already, but this one has another play where Kenny decided to run rather than throw to a WTFO Najee.
He was set to run in both cases, probably pre-snap.

It’s clear the game he saw his 5th year at Pitt against weak ass ACC teams is nowhere near what he faces now. No shame in not having it. Tons of guys don’t get there.jeemie wrote: ↑Mon Dec 04, 2023 3:12 pmEvery QB misses open guys,

I enjoyed watching Hurts and Purdy yesterday. Lots of weapons and two very good teams, but man those two guys just see the game so much better than Kenny. And Kenny was a first round pick.

I missed the second half of the game because I was at a movie.
I don't see the "wide open" receiver here unless you're talking about Austin and that DB is heading over to cut him off at the corner.
Guarantee Pickett's first read was in the middle of the field and then he probably looked to dump it off to the back.
The back is CLEARLY covered.
Pickett might not have felt he had enough time to get the ball to Austin. That is worth criticizing but I don't think that's gonna be a TD.
I saw Napoleon over the Thanksgiving holiday.
Didn't really like Joaquin Phoenix in that role but a pretty good movie overall.
It was goddamn good!! Everybody loved it. Saw Saltburn on Thursday with the wife and that movie is FUCKED UP. My daughter is going to see that Wednesday with a friend of hers. I was waaaaay too uncomfortable taking her to that one. Thank God.
That Barry Keoghan is a GREAT fucking actor. He was the best part of the Banshees of Inisherin, which was a masterpiece. If you haven't seen that, watch it today.
Napoleon was entertaining but I thought they tried too hard to cram Napoleon's entire life into far too short a movie (and I realize it was still like 3 hours long.) Too much goes unexplained, especially the military conquests.
If you haven't seen Phoenix in Beau is Afraid, holy shit. That might be the weirdest movie I have ever seen but went and saw it two days in a row. If you watch that on pay per view now, get fucked up first. You can thank me later.
Gives me something to look forward to after Bowl season.

On the missed dump off, his first read was a deep post and his eyes just tracked the receiver through the entire route…he never once even looked at anyone else.langer wrote: ↑Mon Dec 04, 2023 3:26 pmThere's the play in question. That was just plain terrible.
What made this worse is missing Najee for an easy first eventually resulted in a punt because on the next play, Mason Cole misfired the snap and Kenny was sacked.

Fire Canada. Dionte’s fault. Receiver must’ve slipped. Tomlin is too conservative. O line didn’t give him enough time.jeemie wrote: ↑Mon Dec 04, 2023 5:07 pmOn the missed dump off, his first read was a deep post and his eyes just tracked the receiver through the entire route…he never once even looked at anyone else.langer wrote: ↑Mon Dec 04, 2023 3:26 pmThere's the play in question. I get so tired of watching average, hell even back-up/lowerlevel QBs like Dobbs, Minshew, Howell, DTR, Heinicke, Bagent, O'Connell, etc. climb the pocket as they also consider running straight ahead out of it, BUT they keep their head up and KEEP looking to throw the ball until the last second before crossing the LOS. Not our superstar KP8! Nope. He does it no matter where he is on the field. On this play he takes two step forward from his 6 yard (from the LOS) drop back, PUTS his head down, doesn't look up at all, EVEN though he's still in a clean-ish pocket for the next 3-4 yards forward, and then tries to run into the teeth of the D for a TD -- on a bad wheel, yet!
On a side note, KP8 might very well be injury prone/fragile, too. Because he did the damage to his right ankle himself, as no player, during the entire play, actually touched him below his upper-calf/lower right knee area. He strained it himself (yes, I know he had hurt it previously and was playing on it taped up) running and lunging forward while being tackled around the waist-to-knees area.

Wait, so you went from a shit game to a shit game?
I’m puzzled how he got hurt. No one touched his ankle.
Did he take himself out like he did at Pitt?
What made the difference that he was more hurt and needed surgery?

If guys eating cheetos at home can identify zone from the motion receiver, then why can't Kenny? Of course he can.
There is something else going on here. He looks to have regressed in his ability to read coverages both pre and post snap. Is it because he's being coached to focus only on one area of the field? I have no clue.
What I do know is that last year he was actually moving off of reads and he's not doing that anymore. My theories?
1. Maybe the fear of INTs has been so instilled in him that he's just not comfortable moving through reads.
2. The hits and injuries he's sustained has made him gun shy.
3. NFL defenses have figured out he really struggles versus zones. For some reason he has a tough time visually finding where the holes in the zone will be and go there quickly.
