The worst power play I’ve ever seen. The Canucks had the best shot on the Pens PP.
I am so sick of this ineptitude.

So Malkin isn't on the PP at all on the first try. Some of you will still blame him for it sucking :
One of the top 2-3 PP specialists the last 18 years and dumb fuck, and inept Sully buries Malkin for a few stiffs on the PP.
Sully you idiot.

Jarry standing in his head and the rest of the 5 guys can’t clear. Lame goal after the Pens looked very good to start.

Jarry had no chance on the goal. His team mates were too busy bumbling about and around him.
Team lacks discipline, reflective of the HC.

Malkin had one OZ start in that period. Didn't play 5 minutes and a Whole minute plus of ice time was on the delayed penalty to the PENS.
the roster is broken rightnow with 2 top 6 wingers down and Sully does this shit.
Is this HBO?
At least Tomlin is entertaining.

Yeah that was fortunate for Rik Rak who really looks bad out there this season. He just doesn’t do it for me.

Who, exactly? I haven’t been on the game threads as religiously as I’d like, but I don’t think I’ve seen anyone here specifically blaming Malkin for the Power Play.fractalsteel wrote: ↑Wed Feb 28, 2024 3:25 amSome of you will still blame him for it sucking :

I go to sleep, and they win in OT. I guess for the good of this team, I can’t watch.
That’s a great win against a very good Canucks team.
Great start to the road trip! I’ll tune out again against Seattle.

Relax, it was a joke, but Sully is a slave to his style of coaching and stuck in his ways.Louis Lipps Service wrote: ↑Wed Feb 28, 2024 5:06 amWho, exactly? I too went to bed with the Pens behind and woke up to see they won. Must have been a great third period and more.
As for Malkin, it seems he basically got benched in the first period looking at the TOI late and that he got garbage time in the first period. Hmm. Again when you sit a top PP player for the likes of Eller, Carter and Smith and Rust and Guentzel are out you just hurt your team.
I'm guessing Orange will be at the next game. Hopefully he brings some luck to the Birdies.

3rd period and overtime was really fun, overall. Jarry with some gigantic saves. Lots of scoring chances. They could have potted a couple more goals in that period, for sure.fractalsteel wrote: ↑Wed Feb 28, 2024 1:19 pmRelax, it was a joke, but Sully is a slave to his style of coaching and stuck in his ways.

Some warts still glaring, though. We gave up our token moment-swinging shortie not long after going up a goal to tie the game again.
Then there was an almost comical sequence on the PP where one of the Canucks basically stood at the exact spot of the ice where we always do our drop pass entry on the PP and we passed the pack right to him.
But aside from those two gaffs, we actually played a really good 3rd period, and even better in the overtime.

I've definitely called out Malkin for looking lost on the PP this year, and I'll stand by it. However, time has shown that wasn't the issue (or at least not the primary issue).
I haven't been able to watch many games this year, but as a thought - Why not put Carter on the top PP line in the Hornqvist role, and leave the rest as-is?
I'd give Karlsson-Sid-Geno-Rust-Carter a shot as the top unit (assuming that hasn't been done). Eller and Carter are redundant skillsets. Makes no sense to have them out there together.

Malkin and Karlsson don't mix, especially on the PP. Not blaming one or the other but they just don't have chemistry. Even strength as well.
So why did Sully insist on those two playing together on the PP configuration?
No issue moving Malkin to the 2nd PP but don't bring Karlsson along, let Letang and Malkin play together. Our esteemed HC is too stubborn to do so.
The PP configuration looks the same game to game. The staff has only moved the pieces around. That is why I have been screaming for Reirdon's head for months.
Carter in the Horny role is interesting. Another thing that I read about a few months ago. Sid is really our best puck retriever along the boards and using him in that role on the PP is a waste of talent. Not sure why Rust can't fill that role to a degree because he will battle on the wall.
Like Lipps mentioned in a prior post, how many drop passes(so many guilty here) lead to breakouts for the defending team? The league caught onto to the PP strategy and its flaws early in the season.
Yet no real changes in configurations.
^ This is exactly my thought. Rust (or Puusty for the time being) can be the speedster/retrieval guys. Let Sid do his thing then Geno and Karlsson/Letang can work from the point.fractalsteel wrote: ↑Wed Feb 28, 2024 3:22 pmCarter in the Horny role is interesting. Carter gets plenty of shit from Pens fans (rightly so, to be fair) but he can still do some things well. He's still elite in winning faceoffs, and he's a big body that can clear the front of the net.
I'll defer to you & Louis on the other points (again, only limited viewing this year for me)

I may be the biggest Carter complainer there is, although I haven't done so much this season due to there being so many other things to bitch about.Pabst wrote: ↑Wed Feb 28, 2024 3:55 pm^ This is exactly my thought. But I agree this makes sense.
Although I bet Sully would tell you he won't do it because he wants Sid taking the first PP unit faceoffs, and Carter taking the 2nd PP Unit faceoffs, and doesn't want his two best faceoff guys on the same line.
I personally think not putting your best 5 out there for a PP due to a 5% difference in faceoff percentage is nuts...but hey, here we are.

The goaltending on both sides in 3rd period and OT was absolutely stunning. This was a high quality win, no matter how you slice it.
I've made the point re: Karsson & Malkin many times. I think it's the #1 reason the PP has been so much worse than last year. I don't think it really matters who Karlsson plays with, it's mostly about him doing his thing.
Letang-Malkin
Rust-Sid-Carter
Karlsson-Petterson
Rakell - OConner -Pusti -Bentstrom - Eller until he's traded next week et al

To the bold part, I'm in total agreement with ya B2B. It isn't something new either. Been a big part of the PP problem since the season started. More and more whispers coming out that the organization crafted their PP around Karlsson rather than the pieces that won back to back cups.bradshaw2ben wrote: ↑Wed Feb 28, 2024 7:17 pmThe goaltending on both sides in 3rd period and OT was absolutely stunning. That to me is mind boggling.
Kind of being held hostage.
Imagine telling one of the top ten players all time he has to structure his game around the new guy? Or a generational talent as well and a guy that has given his all to the organization(Letang)?
Sorry guys but we have a new sheriff in town and he is the center piece on the PP.
I'm glad they went out and got Karlsson but the plan after that seems really flawed.
Anyway, continue the winning streak.
