BREAKING, EXCLUSIVE FOLLOW-UP:
So where does Justin Fields fit into all the Steelers drama with Kenny Pickett, Russell Wilson & Mason Rudolph:
1. Justin Fields was contacted by the Steelers after Pickett made it known that he wanted out, per my source.
2. Mike Tomlin was SHOCKED that Pickett wanted to be traded, after the acquisition of Russell Wilson.
3. Tomlin was also upset, because at the time, that left the Steelers with only 1 Quarterback, Wilson.
4. My source indicates there will NOT actually be a competition between Russell Wilson & Justin Fields. Wilson has been guaranteed the starting job.
Again… WOW.

BREAKING, EXCLUSIVE:
The FULL details of the Steelers drama involving Kenny Pickett, Russell Wilson & Mason Rudolph have emerged (Giants also involved!):
1. The Steelers met with Russell Wilson the Friday before they ultimately signed him. He did NOT sign that day because he refused to sign unless he was guaranteed to be the starter.
2. My source says THE SAME THING HAPPENED WITH THE GIANTS. Russell Wilson did not sign with the Giants because they refused to guarantee him the starting job.
3. In the meantime, Mason Rudolph negotiated a contract to remain with the Steelers, but when he met with them that Sunday they pulled the rug out from under him! Pulled back the deal!
4. When Wilson wouldn’t initially sign, the Steelers’ plan was to have Pickett & Rudolph compete for the job.
5. Rudolph & Pickett had already made plans to start practicing together that Monday.
6. Instead, Rudolph called Pickett that Sunday night and told him the Steelers decided to go a different direction. His deal was off the table.
7. Pickett tried calling Mike Tomlin that Sunday night, but coach did not answer.
8. Tomlin returned Pickett’s call on Monday, AFTER the news came out that the Steelers were signing Wilson.
9. Tomlin told Pickett that Wilson was the guaranteed starter. THERE WAS NEVER GOING TO BE A QB COMPETITION.
10. Pickett was very unhappy with Tomlin and the Steelers, then he demanded a trade.
All per my trusted source.
Just… WOW.

I don't blame Pickett for being pissed off at how things worked out with Wilson, but he still has to act like a fucking professional.LakecrestSteeler wrote: ↑Mon Apr 08, 2024 4:10 pmNothing earth shattering and nothing that wasn’t speculated.

I still believe Pickett can turn into a quality NFL starter, but you don't treat a Super Bowl winning QB like shit when he reaches out to you, whether you've been screwed over or not. You don't refuse to dress as the emergency QB when Mason gets the start.
Kenny has some growing up to do, but he most definitely has a reason to be pissed.
Also, the Steelers actually must love fucking with Mason Rudolph if this is true. Sheesh.

I want it to be true, even partially true, because this drama is wildly entertaining.
“Thoughts are a waste of time for me.” - Michael Pettaway Tomlin
I said it the moment Wilson was signed...."there's no one that will ever convince me that Tomlin didn't tell Russ that he IS the starter (getting the deal done), PERIOD!"
And, Russ would've never signed here IF HE WASN"T guaranteed the starter spot, period!
I'm sure Tomlin either lied to KP (or ignored him) until Russ was signed. I'm 100% sure Tomlin would lie about all of this to the media to make himself look like he's always fair (and honest) to ALL players -- which he isn't, of course.
Either way, we have better (more physically gifted at least) QBs in the room (I think?).
MR and KP got screwed by Mike "the players coach" Tomlin in the process. But hey, as long as his Teflon stays in tact he's all good.

Too bad there are no more Bill Cowher players or coaches for Jibbs to cling to.
Of course, he needed to go out an acquire a
HOF talent at QB to bail his overrated ass out, and secure the likelihood of one playoff win.

Even as the President of the Mike Tomlin haters club, I dont belive this story at all. This is exxageration for shock value.
There is no way a professionbal organization does nearly any of that -- not even the Rooney Tomlin clown show

I don’t think it is all that bad…kind of mundane…how else would it have gone down? It doesn’t seem like an exaggeration. I don’t think it really paints anyone in that bad of a light. Tomlin and Khan redid the QB room. Pickett got out of the Paleolithic era in terms of offense. Rudolph has a new lease on life. And it appears to have worked out for Fields.
Tomlin and Khan appear to have misread Pickett.
I am sure KP, agent, and father are all happy.
Kenny sees himself as a starter, and this is what a starter would do if he indeed is a starter.
TomKhan does not see KP as a starter and this is what a coach and GM would do in such a situation.
Time will tell who wins. Odds are it will be a wash and so diluted by time and picks nobody will care!

At the end of the day, it was a business decision.
I dislike Tomlin as a HC. I don't think he has the vision to build a successful, championship contending, modern football team but perhaps Khan does.
Pickett had Art II and Colbert's fingerprints on that selection, maybe more than Tomlin, but Tomlin did saddle Pickett and the offense with his unqualified OC for two seasons.
I agree with you, it likely has worked out for all parties involved.

If this story is true, he did act like a professional. He took care of himself and his future. Unless you think he somehow owed it to Mike Tomlin and the Steelers to waste another year of his career under this incompetent jackass to meet a fan’s definition of being a “Steeler”. Fuck that. What IS that exactly these days? The entire team is occupied by losers. The kings of NHALS and almost zero playoff success. Cam is the old man at 35 and he has 1 playoff win in a Steelers jersey. What an asset. He epitomizes the “Steeler Way”. Pickett didn’t really develop under Tomlin... no QB has developed under Tomlin. Why would he stick around if he was lied to? Just to impress fans who think he should? I applaud Pickett for giving Tomlin the middle finger. He deserved it. If only Rooney II had the balls.K_C_ wrote: ↑Mon Apr 08, 2024 4:35 pmI don't blame Pickett for being pissed off at how things worked out with Wilson, but he still has to act like a fucking professional.LakecrestSteeler wrote: ↑Mon Apr 08, 2024 4:10 pmNothing earth shattering and nothing that wasn’t speculated.

And fuck Russell Wilson. I’m sick of all these has beens crying to Mediocre Mike when their career is in the toilet, stroking his ego and telling him how they always wanted to play for him. And why not? No accountability for the get along gang! If Teflon likes you, it will buy you another year or two at least. And what luck! The Steelers HC has brought in amazing yesterday talents like A. Robinson and Pat Pete. And now Wilson. Big fuckin’ deal. Russell Wilson’s SB is just about as far in the rear view mirror as Tomlin’s, and Pickett doesn’t owe him anything. The Seahawks tossed him to the curb and traded him to Denver. Denver told him to fuck off. But Pickett is supposed to kiss his ass when the Steelers HC lied to him and fucked him over? I doubt Kenny was rude to Wilson. He just knew he needed to get away from this dysfunctional clown show.
I don’t know if the story is true. But something happened, and Pickett had the leverage to get out. And he used it. I don’t blame him at all. He owed Tomlin nothing. If the Steelers ownership/GM allowed this to happen, Pickett had to know who is calling the shots, and it’s not Deuce.
I also think it’s interesting that Rudolph and Pickett were both good with competing with each other. That’s a pretty good dynamic for the 2024 QB competition, and if they were planning on working out together, that shows that both were on board. Also shows they were friends, and if Rudolph had a deal and it was pulled, I’m sure they had a very honest conversation before Pickett tried contacting Tomlin. Tomlin showed his ass. Zero integrity. Lied to Rudolph and Pickett, just to end up sucking Wilson’s dick... How could Pickett trust Tomlin after that?
People who don’t believe this story trust the Mark Madden yarn that Pickett refused to dress, and used that no-source story to slam him for weeks.. but this one? The Pickett haters and Tomlin dick riders roll their eyes. You seem to buy the “refused to dress” story too, so mission accomplished by the Steelers PR team. “Yep, Kenny was a malcontent and a dick. Besides, he has little hands. Good riddance! Glad he’s gone! Fuck that prima donna!”
This franchise is a joke and this story is hilarious. And since none of us yet know what really happened, I’ll choose to believe this story is closer to the truth than the other non-sourced story that the Steelers PR team put out. This one makes much more sense and shows the true character of the garbage human being that is Mike Tomlin.

Mike Tomlin and NHALS - The embodiment of the soft bigotry of lowered expectations.
I've loathed Mike Tomlin for well over a decade but this isn't about him nor really is it about Russell Wilson.CoolShades wrote: ↑Mon Apr 08, 2024 10:46 pmIf this story is true, he did act like a professional. I've defended Pickett around these parts for the last 2 years, but I actually DO believe Pickett was angry when he was healthy enough to play, but Cool Shades correctly went with the hot hand in Rudolph and I believe Kenny initially refused to dress and only did so when the story got out and Pickett looked like an entitled asshole. Look, I like Pickett and believe he got fucked over in Matt Canada's offense and with dudes like Chuks, Dan Moore and Mason Cole up front. Diontae Johnson is a "1 step forward, 2 steps back" kind of player. Freiermuth perpetually hurt and Najee Harris extremely limited. Obviously Canada's horrific play design and play calling did Kenny no favors, but this is very easy.....
Pickett did not do enough in his starts last season to simply be handed the starter's job when he was healthy. It is as simple as that and we all have eyes. The offense looked a shitload better with Mason running it.
Also, Russell Wilson deserves Pickett's respect no matter how he landed in Pittsburgh. The guy is a Super Bowl winning QB and very possibly a Hall of Famer. You tell me, is Kenny in a better spot right now, behind a young star QB in Jalen Hurts who recently had his team in the Super Bowl and was an MVP candidate, or would Pickett have been better off shutting the fuck up and learning behind an old QB like Russell Wilson who is on a 1 year deal?
C'mon. Kenny fucked himself here and you know it.

I don’t know it. You seem to think you do, though. Cool. You can believe what you want. I don’t know what the truth is. I also know that Pickett didn’t set the world on fire playing QB, so I’m not (and never have) pretended otherwise.K_C_ wrote: ↑Mon Apr 08, 2024 10:56 pmI've loathed Mike Tomlin for well over a decade but this isn't about him nor really is it about Russell Wilson.CoolShades wrote: ↑Mon Apr 08, 2024 10:46 pmIf this story is true, he did act like a professional.
You tell me, is Kenny in a better spot right now, behind a young star QB in Jalen Hurts who recently had his team in the Super Bowl and was an MVP QB, or would Pickett have been better off shutting the fuck up and learning behind an old QB like Russell Wilson who is on a 1 year deal?
C'mon. Kenny fucked himself here and you know it.
I don’t think anyone believed Pickett was going to start over Rudolph since Rudolph had the hot hand. So if the Steelers weren’t going to start Pickett, why not let him rest another week or two? Why risk injury? He just came off his surgery and rehab. If the Steelers wanted and needed him to play, I’m sure he would have gone. I’m also sure he wanted to play. Who wouldn’t? But since they wanted to ride Mason, there was no need to risk it. Pickett has always claimed that it was a team decision to keep him out. I’ve never heard anyone credible (including players, coaches and staff) say otherwise. But it sure helps the narrative to say he was a malcontent and a whiner. All I’ve ever heard about Pickett on the record is that he is a true professional, busts his ass studying, puts the time in, and is a competitor. He’s also a winner. That’s what I want in a QB. (He also needed a coach and a system, though, and that was majorly lacking in Pittsburgh. He struggled. No question.)
You act like Pickett spit on Wilson. What is your idea of disrespect, and what do you think Pickett did? This is so bizarre to me. If he’s going to learn behind a good QB, Hurts is a much better mentor now. Wilson was rejected by the team he won a SB with, and cut by the team that traded for him. By all accounts he’s a locker room cancer, a real prick and well past his prime. So yes, I think Pickett is in a much better spot. He’s with a better organization with a better HC and a chance to develop. It will do him wonders being out of the cancer that is the Pittsburgh locker room and that dysfunctional coaching staff. I think if given the choice, he’d rather be starting, but he’s at least going to a real NFL team with a real coaching staff and a chance to move his career forward. That wasn’t happening with Mediocre Mike.
I think Pickett was given a shit sandwich and did the best he could with it. You don’t draft a QB in the 1st round and give him Matt fuckin’ Canada, Mediocre Mike and that garbage offensive line (including Mason Cole) for 2 seasons. I don’t care who it was, that was a death sentence for a rookie QB.
The difference is, a large portion of the fan base liked Pickett and wanted to give him a chance with a real OC. They wanted him to succeed and 2024 was his chance. In my large circle of Steeler fans, there isn’t one person who is happy that Pickett is gone or how this played out. People who never said anything about Tomlin now have strong opinions. Rooney is getting slammed too. People were willing to be patient with Pickett. The Steelers blew it with him. Does anyone seriously believe they are going anywhere with Wilson or Fields in 2024? No one does. So what was the point? So you can maybe squeeze out NHALS and if a miracle occurs, somehow squeak into the playoffs and win a game? So Cam can maybe get another playoff win to improve his overrated HOF chances? That’s success? For who? Because that’s the absolute ceiling for this team. Look at the schedule. It’s not happening. Not without major injuries and NFL scriptwriters making it happen.
This is not a good situation for the organization, and if this team limps along again to a mediocre season (which based on their schedule it’s a certainty), it will be a PR disaster for them. And if Pickett turns into a legit starting QB? A large swath of this fanbase will never forgive Tomlin OR Rooney.
I’m hoping for both. Here’s to 2024 being a Steelers shit show and NHALS finally dies, and Kenny and the Eagles make a nice run in the playoffs. Bonus points for Hurts twisting an ankle or breaking a finger and Pickett gets significant playing time and looks like a legit QB.
Mike Tomlin and NHALS - The embodiment of the soft bigotry of lowered expectations.
Obviously there's too much to actually respond to, but yes...I 100% know Kenny Pickett is in a much worse situation behind Jalen Hurts (young QB who has put himself up there among the best in the game) than he would be behind Russell Wilson (again, an old QB on a 1 year deal.)CoolShades wrote: ↑Mon Apr 08, 2024 11:37 pmI don’t know it. If only Rooney II had the balls.
Even funnier, Pickett would FINALLY have an NFL level OC to help him grow as a QB (Wilson is also a willing and again OLD and ALMOST RETIRED mentor, unlike Hurts who is just getting started) and the offense is going to be run heavy, with plenty of play action. The Steelers are going to most definitely upgrade RT, C and WR with this draft (yes, they'll upgrade at WR. DJ was the ultimate bait and switch player) so everything would have begun to fall in place for KP8.
Now he gets to watch Jalen Hurts' coat on the sidelines to make sure it doesn't get stolen. For years to come.

I, for one, think Kenny is worse off at the moment. Maybe he could get a couple of games should Hurts go down with an injury and do quite well in the Eagle's system. He could either be traded or set to hit free agency to find a new home if he show cases his skills in a real offence. We will wait to see. I don't believe he was ever the answer but I would have liked to give him and Rudolph a chance in a real offence and see who came out on top and how they did! At worst, we would have a top 10 pick.

Howard Griffith had to resort to chop-blocking him during the 1997 AFC Championship Game. An incredulous Kirkland asked Griffith, “Why do you have to use cheap tactics like chop-blocking?” Griffith replied “Why do you have to be a 300-pound linebacker?”

I don’t know if he will ever be the answer either. It’s just a shame this once proud but now mediocre franchise has embraced the pursuit of NHALS above all else and the absolute protection of Tomlin’s fragile ego. The Steelers goal now has morphed into getting an annual NFL participation trophy. While other teams like KC are shooting for a Lombardi, the Steelers are shooting for a Tomlin. No one expects anything beyond that. Not the players, the ownership or the coaches. Not even the fans. It’s pathetic.
I’m with you... if this went bad, they could have had a nice draft pick and no one would have been upset that they moved on from Pickett. I just don’t care about mediocrity and acting like it means something.

I find it interesting that Tomlin hasn't yet received an extension. Maybe Rooney is finally getting sick of the Steelers being a moribund franchise.RemoAZ wrote: ↑Tue Apr 09, 2024 2:32 amI just hope this is more fuel to keep them from bringing Tomlin back. NHALS won't cut it this year. The Steelers 7 seasons without a playoff win streak has finally caught the attention of the general media. Unfortunately for Tomlin, the Steelers aren't guaranteed to even make the playoffs. Last year was fluky (beating the Browns despite having no offense, the Ravens dropping a dozen passes and losing a game they should have won by double digits, the Steelers not having to face Joe Burrow at all). The Steelers probably won't be as lucky this year.

While I do think a professional sports franchise often does ridiculous stiff like this, when the report starts with a statement that absolutely didn’t happen, it sort of paints all of it in a bad light.
The Steelers didn’t contact Justin Fields when any of that happened—he was under cobtract with the Bears, along such contact tampering. IIRC they can’t even contact his agent. So, maybe they heated up trade talks but that’s a different thing
It sounds a bit like his source is a bullshitter, not that I doubt KP was a baby about the whole thing or that MT was infatuated with other QBs he can torture with his offensive mindset.

There is a pretty big X factor in Philly. We all know what happened after Pouncey left. Eagles lost a HOF center, who was I am pretty sure, fairly responsible for the brotherly shove.Stillchest wrote: ↑Mon Apr 08, 2024 8:39 pmAll good points!LakecrestSteeler wrote: ↑Mon Apr 08, 2024 8:29 pmI don’t think it is all that bad…kind of mundane…how else would it have gone down?
Will Kelce be replaced with a joke? Will the "shove" still be effective. I bet Kelce was responsible for about 3-4 victories a year. If they get a joke as center, it could be a long season for Hurts and Pickett.
On second thought it is probably not an X factor; only an X factor in a Steelers' fan's head because of the jokes we rolled out after Pouncey.
Cam Jurgens was drafted in the second round of the 2022 draft to be the heir apparent to Kelce at center. Kelce actually hand-picked Jurgens to be his long-term replacement when he was asked to evaluate centers prior to the 2022 draft, and Jurgens was the player he liked the most. Kelce said Jurgens had a chance to be a "difference-maker" at center.
Jurgens had essentially a redshirt 2022 season to learn from Kelce before becoming the right guard in 2023 and playing next to him. Throughout the process, Jergens has used the time with Kelce to his advantage

All this hoopla over a guy who will be out of the league in 2-3 years. This pecker-head averages 2 touchdown passes a month and thinks after injury and our best run of form all year that he'd walk back into the position before the playoffs. Then he gets his feelings hurt when we bring in competition and he has to fight for his job...which he never really solidified in the first place. The only thing smaller than Kenny's hands is his backbone.
If this ordeal taught us anything it's that Kenny is a fucking loser in every sense of the word.

"Work harder not smarter" - Mike Tomlin
Tomlin is one thing. A great bullshitter. Such a bullshitter that he can bullshit to player's faces and they believe he's being real with them.DP39 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 08, 2024 7:43 pmI said it the moment Wilson was signed...."there's no one that will ever convince me that Tomlin didn't tell Russ that he IS the starter (getting the deal done), PERIOD!"
But hey, as long as his Teflon stays in tact he's all good.![]()
