Assuming the Vikings truly scouted J.J. McCarthy before selecting him #10 overall in the '23 draft, they should have seen that Roman Wilson is highly reliable securing the ball when it is in his vicinity.

Pittsburgh lined up to recover and even used a timeout before the play happened. Minnesota had time to think it over, and still kicked it right at him.

Wilson may be underutilized in the offense right now, but the Steelers put trust in him with the game on the line and he came through as expected. I still hope for him to become a gamebreaker like he was for the Wolverines in college.

I don't know if Wilson can play or not, but all this conserternation is ridiculous. There haven't been enough balls to go around for the playmakers since Ben's prime. Arthur Smith's offense can barely get the ball to the top WR let alone the third or fourth.

How long did it take Austin to make any impact? And I bet he walks and some other team turns him into a real weapon.

Same will probably hold true for Wilson.

It's a Tomlin defender. Never criticizes him so it's likely a family member or part of Tomlin's paid PR team

My issue is and always has been that Mike Tomlin has no feel for these moments.

Almost every decision he makes is wrong.

Ok at the goal line...I haven't done the math but I bet kicking the FG or going for the TD is close in terms of affecting win probability. So either decision is probably justifiable...if and ONLY if that is you decide to go for the TD, you call a play that actually has a high probability of success at generating a touchdown. So Tomlin calls perhaps the lowest percentage play he could.

Going for it on fourth down ...there the math is solid...go for it because success shoots your win probability to 100%.

But if you're that scared and are going to punt, you have...have...have to try and down the punt inside the ten.

Booming it into the EZ gains you 19 yards of FP...one normal pass play erases most of that.

So Tomlin not only most often makes a suboptimal decision, he makes it worse by backing up that decision with suboptimal tactics.

We've been over and over Tomlin calling for a dive from the 3 and punting with a foot to go to ice the game. The latter one...is defensible though cuz Steelers have not been a great short yardage team and fail there and vikes only have to drive 20 yards for FG range. Booming the punt outta the end zone tho....like what the actual fuck!!

The decision was very defensible, imo. Perfect execution in that situation, except for maybe the punt itself.

Trust the pass rush to close out the game, rather than spin the roulette wheel that the offense may get the short yardage. The Vikes kicker hit a 62 yarder the week before. No reason to allow a fluke play to get them in range. Besides, if they had gotten the short yardage on 3rd down, then they would not have been on 4th down.

The pass rush is the strenghth of the team. And it's awesome to see how aggressive the DBs are getting in the secondary knowing that the QB is likely to make a poor decision. They have experience, savvy and talent all over the defense. It's constructed well to handle situations where the opponent has to pass.

Was anyone else tho at least a little surprised that vikes chose the wayyy low percentage onsides when they still had two play stoppages post kickoff. They kickoff, Steelers run back to say 25, vikes hold them, they prob get ball back in better field position with a minute left.

First, the biggest mistake was calling a run play on fourth and goal.

Second, the biggest mistake was not giving Rodgers two changes to get the first. Its 2nd and 6. Give AR two changes to pick up the first and its game over.

Third, the biggest mistake -- especially when you are going to take the delay of game -- is not letting AR line up and try to draw them offsides. The worst that can happen is...a five yard penalty.

Fourth, the math is basically comparing the Vikings win probability starting at the 40 instead of the 20. If the delta is less than the odds of failing to pick up the fourth, then you go for it. Is there a calculator?

Finally, why would you punt into the EZ? Why not try for a nice punt to hang and land at the 10?

College football is full of players that looked great in college and yet sucked in the NFL.

All I’m saying is pump the brakes on the “most reliable hands since AB” nonsense over a guy who hasn’t played at all.
