He was on the active roster not the practice squad. Steelers had to release him in order to call Ventrone up. I'm sure they intended to sign Johnson to the PS had he cleared waivers.

Ah, my mistake.

Pretty sure Wes Johnson wasn't going to win Browns game. Or any game so long as the current OL stays healthy.

There is lots of roster idiocy to go around, but this one ain't keeping me up at night.

This was an uncessary move IMO maybe they should have waived Webb or Jones who no one would touch. It just a young OL that could have played multi positions.

Dumb move imo.

Had tremendous upside, unless o line guru thought he wasn't' worth it. So many other guys nobody would have touched.

Hey, we still have Mike Adams. /s/

Now they could sign a 4th backup tackle from another teams PS.

Give the thoughts on Colbert's drafting ability on this form it should be a vast improvement in talent. :D

Jones, this is hardly the point. He was a developmental o line prospect. There is now no chance to see whether he develops into quality back up material or even better. We just pissed away a 5th round draft pick. It is fucking stupid! Why draft past the 4th round, then? SMH at this FO.

Maybe they should've cut Jarvis Jones. Developmental prospects are nice, but you have to win right now if you are Colbert and Tomlin or you are done, most likely.

In that context, I wouldn't expect to see a whole lot of "developmental prospects" sticking around if there is a more pressing need. That's exactly what you get with the hot seat.

The choice was not cut Jones or cut Jonson. That's silly and hardly valid. Why not put Laundry Jones ass out on the street.

Dumb move. We JUST drafted the guy!

Care to explain how calling up another gunner was a "pressing need" when they dressed 10 DB's for the game? Is gunner that important? Is Ventrone that much better than BW Webb or Antwon Blake as a gunner? One worth risking a 2014 5th round draft pick for? And had they cut Landry Jones, would anyone in the league be dumb enough to sign him?

Have to agree with Lit here. It isn't about what Wes Johnson brings to the table right now.

It's about short sighted decisions that co to he to nip this teams progress in the bud.

They thought enough about the kid to spend a 5th on him. Then, they thought enough of him to put him on the active roster coming out of camp. That is big to me. They didn't practice squad him. So they saw enough there to put him on the final 53 which boots another player.

So now he gets released for a journeyman to come in and play team? Short sighted IMO.

Because next season we won't have a second year OT to look at in camp. It's back to square one.

And anyone thinking bout saying these people are paid to do this and are experts please stop. People get paid to do things all the time they fuck up and get fired for.

And this current staff is what they put on tape. And what they are putting on tape is a bottom 5 team.

Don't start with Jones, you will have to rip the Tomlin Fan Club card from his cold, dead hands. Neither the coaches or the front office can do no wrong, remember?

How do you get the feeling that Colbert/Tomlin are on the hot seat? 3 coaches since 1969. Dont get me wrong, I hate Steinbrenner type owners but the Rooneys are the opposite - stuck in the mud.

I'm not even that much of a Tomlin fan... Just laughing at this point at the Hater Nation that thinks there is any quick fix. Seriously, what the fuck would you do if you were in the driver's seat- and back it up.

Yeah- reality bites. Deal with it.

Oh, and Wes Johnson has done NOTHING to date. Not one fucking thing. So keep that in mind while you work up the bile... He wasn't the "future of the franchise" or anything close to it. He is actually somewhere between Tony Hills and Doug Legursky in the big scheme of things, except Doug Legursky actually did something, and Wes Johnson couldn't beat out Mike Adams.

You are speaking to what he is at this moment. 5th round picks need to develop.

If that time isn't afforded you are always starting over. In other words, spinning your wheels.

How long did Keisel cut his teeth until finally getting a chance ?

Under this FO he's cut to bring up a gunner who no doubt will end up cut as well.

Because Tomlin said it in the offseason. He said another 8-8 season there would be changes including him.

Sadly, no guarantee that includes Colbert, who is at least half the problem.

so, let's just forfeit any future draft picks unless we're picking a guy who's done something in the NFL.

He's also a 5th round rookie from THIS draft class. Nobody expected him to do anything THIS season. People are saying it was a shortsighted move which it was. I don't know what you don't understand about this. It was short sighted. We can't continue to lose draft picks like we have either through FA or just outright cutting them before even given a chance to prove themselves. It's how we've ended up with this talent deficient roster. Cutting a 5th round OLinemen who we need to coach up for a 1 week rental at gunner is a terrible strategic move. How important is a gunner for one Sunday vs. a guy who could potentially be OLine depth (or maybe a starter) down the road? We've struggled with injuries at OLine for several consecutive seasons. Don't you think it would be prudent to have ample reserves? Especially one that you just spent a 5th round pick on. We could have signed some clown off the street as an oline development and used that 5th round pick on another area of need. Instead it goes down as another wasted pick in the Colbert/Tomlin regime. It wouldn't mean as much if this wasn't a trend with these guys. Case in point, look at the 2008 and 2009 drafts, not a single guy still on the roster. If you include 2010 I think we have 3 guys from those 3 classes. We're squandering drafts and you can't do that in a franchise that prides itself on building through the drafts and developing talent.

Frustration posts don't carry much weight.

Same as its it's all Colbert's fault. Somehow I doubt that Tomlin is an orphan and finds out what the evil Simon Le'Colbert will do to him this week with the roster. In reality the roster has a 100% stamp of approval by Tomlin.

The roster is Tomlin's roster. Saying the roster isn't Tomlin's roster is in reality much worse than Tomlin's perception of racism visa vi player's coach comments.

A gunner is the difference between winning and losing?

If it is- the team has more serious problems.

Gunner had two tackles. Has Wes Johnson even been active on game day?

Seems like an easy call. I doubt either "prospect" matters one whit compared to just getting the guys who see significant playing time to do basic shit like throw the ball and catch it.

I agree with you that this particular move is far down my list of things to get on Tomlin about.

However, one issue I DO have with him is how he is staffing the team on game day because of this insistence that he needs "ST-only players".

We have weakened the lines and the WR spot because Tomlin dresses 11 DBs on game days.

This is so ridiculous it is not even funny.

And that he did dump a potential game day prospect (down the line) for a ST-only guy is related to this.

The 11 DB's are for a very porous, epic lousy and plainly untalented ST's which consistently struggles to perform at an acceptable NFL level. Can anyone tell whats wrong with this picture? Perhaps this is why? Wesley Johnson while terrible to lose a developmental OLine prospect IMO did not and was not going to make any contribution this season short of an epic slough of injuries along the OLine. Sorry, but Johnson was chosen to go. Now if Johnson turns out to perform even at the level that Urbik has and starts for the Jets or another franchise and has even marginal success this looks bad. Very Bad! We'll have to wait and see. But for now it was their option they chose to go with. No use crying over spilled milk.

So how was johnson looking in practice last week? Or the week before?

you would think they cut Thaddeus Gibson the way you guys are going on about a 5th round pick.

I'm not going on about it. I have said- three times now- that it's reason #746 to get on Mike Tomlin

I'm just saying it goes with his thinking for STs.

I disagree it was his only option, BTW.

Practice squad guy. Adam Gettis OG. He was drafted by the Redskins in the fifth round, with the 141st overall pick, of the 2012 NFL Draft. Johnson has already been replaced.
