How did Tomlin elevate the standard? Cowher made 6 AFCC games from 1994-2005. Tomlin made 3 in 19 season, and he had a Hall of Fame QB for over a decade. Why are the Steelers the only team where playoff success doesn't matter?

Cowher had a losing season or two mixed in. You have to understand when the goal is NHALS., winning the division, conference or Super Bowl are secondary. The only goal is to not have losing seasons. NHALS rules everythingW&M_Steeler wrote: ↑Mon Dec 22, 2025 12:28 pmHow did Tomlin elevate the standard? Cowher made 6 AFCC games from 1994-2005. Because the rubric and point of most of these articles are focused on win/loss records NOT playoff or SB records.W&M_Steeler wrote: ↑Mon Dec 22, 2025 12:28 pmHow did Tomlin elevate the standard? That would be a different story and obviously different coaches.
Life is easier if you just accept NHALS.

Steelers are going to be the 4th seed and most likely get the Bills. I doubt the next Bills game will go much better than the previous one, but who knows.

I couldn't care less about NHALS. 2014, 2017, and 2018 in particular were failures regardless of whether the Steelers finished with a winning regular season record, and the Steelers would have been better off accepting a losing season in 2019 and keeping their first round pick instead of panic trading for Minkah to salvage NHALS. This team would look a lot better with Justin Herbert right now, and the Steelers ultimately got little out of the Minkah rental.Texas Black & Gold wrote: ↑Mon Dec 22, 2025 12:40 pmBecause the rubric and point of most of these articles are focused on win/loss records NOT playoff or SB records.W&M_Steeler wrote: ↑Mon Dec 22, 2025 12:28 pmHow did Tomlin elevate the standard? NHALS is a curse. It takes the focus off of building for postseason success, and it creates a separate, lesser bar for success that the media expects Steelers fans (but no other fanbase) to be satisfied with.

Steelers fans don’t care about NHALS. Ownership and coaching strive for it. It is their stated goal which is why we mock it and celebrate it. It is all they want and all you peasant fans will get. Now celebrate your NHALS trophy and get back to work.W&M_Steeler wrote: ↑Mon Dec 22, 2025 1:09 pmI couldn't care less about NHALS. 2014, 2017, and 2018 in particular were failures regardless of whether the Steelers finished with a winning regular season record, and the Steelers would have been better off accepting a losing season in 2019 and keeping their first round pick instead of panic trading for Minkah to salvage NHALS. So many on here obsessed with NHALS and the assumption that it is the end all to be all is sadly misguided.

RemoAZ wrote: ↑Mon Dec 22, 2025 1:47 amI'm out until Tomlin is gone. Haven't watched a game this year and won't until they make a change. Never thought they could drive out the passion and love I've had for this team but they sure did. Over the years I've been mad enough to break things and happy enough to shed a tear, I blame the participation trophy crowd, some of which reside here sadly. Mediocre is the new elite for these sorry folks. Same people that are happy with the hitting too hard penalties. It seems like our entire society doesn't care about being first anymore. Or maybe I'm just too old school...
The mediocrity crowd is alive and well on this website. Tomlin’s standard has infected everything.
I could have written this post. I was discussing this very topic yesterday with a good friend who is a Bears fan. He’s excited about his team, the head coach and the direction they are going. I have zero interest in the Steelers because of Tomlin and the mediocrity. Celebrating it is no different than finishing last in a special Olympics race and getting a medal. I checked in on the score on the web in the 4th quarter and saw the Lions were driving for the go ahead TD and I was rooting for the Lions. That’s just sad. Tomlin and his unlikeable bunch of sycophants have killed my fandom.
And it’s the pathetic rationalizations. “You know only one team can win the Super Bowl every year, right?” “It’s hard to win a playoff game!” “Mike Tomlin does more with less than any team in the league!” “Tomlin doesn’t have a franchise QB!” And my favorite - “Mike Tomlin has never had a losing season! Why would you want him gone? You must be a racist!”
What makes me sick is the idea that they somehow squeeze out a playoff victory. If they do, we all know that all will be forgiven, and Marvin Lewis 2, the Electric Boogaloo will get another extension. I hope they make him the highest paid coach in NFL history. Lord knows he deserves it. The NHALS Standard is the NHALS Standard. One playoff win should pacify the Tomlin mouth breathers for another decade at least.
Fuck you, Mike Tomlin… and fuck all his enablers, too. Up all your asses with a red hot poker!

Rooney generally stated it when he threw it back at the fans last offseason
And, if it was not the chief goal then there would have made SOME change due to the historic level of playoff failure especially in a widened field
They lose this year in first game and they will have the absurd record of most non-losing seasons and most consecutive playoff losses. Thats not a one-off that takes times and purpose to achieve.
the neutering of Ben showed the primacy of TOP-ball
and the "obsession" with NHALS stems from the franchise and the media
this is intentional martyball - it is a fairly proven method to achieve .500 football
We can debate the word "Goal" but they are most certainly content and intentional
Hopefully in round one this year the Refs will show up for them Again

Agreed. Between my Tomlin fatigue and the refs inserting themselves into every play on the last drive I found myself barely caring about the ending and somewhat rooting for a Steelers defensive collapse. People this morning are talking about how exciting the game was and I just didn't feel it. My Fandom has been ruined.CoolShades wrote: ↑Mon Dec 22, 2025 3:06 pmI could have written this post. The first time I can remember feeling angry during a Steelers win was the Patriots game in 2018. It figured that the first time in forever that the Steelers beat the Patriots it was too little too late because the Steelers dropped winnable games against bad Broncos and Raiders teams (that was the infamous Raiders time pressure game). That 2018 mid-season collapse, coming off the 2017 Jags debacle, was the last straw for me, and to see them finally beat the Pats just to miss the playoffs pissed me off. That was the beginning of the end of my Fandom as I had known it.
It's hard for me to cheer against the Steelers. Very hard. Not in my DNA. I'm sure even Perch yesterday was having flashes of an internal crisis since we did see some positive things.
That said I'm also a realist. I know how this rodeo ends. Despite our win, I still saw a ton of slop and slather. We started the game never throwing the ball past the line of scrimmage, even on 3rd down. We were sloppy in our protections. The only reason we were tied at half was because of a MIRACLE catch and play.
Sure, we kicked ass in the 3rd quarter but we had 2 points to show for all that effort. We still failed in so many ways:
1. Austin alternated between prevent defense and this odd cover 0 scheme that left massive holes all over the field. Just dumb.
2. We were dropping INTs left and right.
3. We were sloppy as hell with clumsy OPIs from Darnell and Spencer Anderson lining up past the fckin ball.
4. We had guys RUNNING OUT OF BOUNDS (Darnell and Jonnu) late in the game which would have burned a ton more clock and forced Lions to use timeouts. Stupid play.
So even though we won, you still saw all the same signs of poor coaching and discipline that plague this team. Hell, we had a WR engaged with a fan trying to punch him instead of focusing on talking to coaches and getting ready for the next series.
So, when we say we HATE NHALS it's because we all know what's coming. Even in victory, we know ultimate defeat is right around the corner.

Good season boys. We achieved our goal leaving nothing of importance left to play for. So I'll catch you guys around draft time. Let's run it back next season.

1. NHALS is more powerful than gravity
2. Playing ultra tight and risk averse football in the modern NFL allows you to beat bad and careless teams and win just over half your games.
3. Playing this style guarantees an ass beating by elite teams with modern and ingenious offensive coordinators.
4. The goal of the franchise is to be “above the mean” which means NHALS. Ownership wants what Tomlin delivers. They and a lot of you don’t care about titles, just moderately competitive teams and winning records.
One win over a better than average team changes nothing. Bottoming out is our only hope. Fire Tomlin chants were the highlight of the last decade
Not true. One win over a better than average team changes nothing
It allows the chucklehead media turds to get back to the business of blowing Jibba Jabber as well as giving fanboys something to chest thump about.
