Ha ha
Is there a deadline for announcing down to 53 or just by game time next Sunday ?

I believe it is 4:00pm (EST) Saturday August 30th.

Pittsburgh Steelers ‏@steelers 3m

We have claimed CB @OhGi_3Dawg3 (B.W. Webb) off waivers and placed LB Jordan Zumwalt on the Reserve/Injured List.

Jordan Zumwalt can't be placed on the reserve/injured list unless he's cleared waivers

The Patriots will probably claim him. They have a thing for hoarding other teams' injured players for no apparent reason.

B.W. Webb looked good last year and is a William and Mary product.

I had him in the board contest-- I figured as a W&M guy, Tomlin would be all over him.

Sometimes players and schemes just don't mesh or the time is not right for the player

I mean James Harrison, Brent Jones, Johhny Unitias come to mind

yup I know ... you can add plain old change of scenery as well to that list....if I was confident that tomlin has a certain specific scheme id be more hopeful...I was much more confident in cowher handpicking guys to fit his defense than ill ever be with tomlin

I'm surprised David Paulson is eligible for the practice squad, and I assume this must have been posted before they claimed B.W. Webb.

Falcons cut yawin smallwood... I know he was a favorite of those on this board leading into draft.

May not be a bad guy to target for practice squad.

Zumwalt to IR. Never stop collecting talent. Maybe slide through and practice squad him.

If dan molls is honestly in consideration then I think you take a look, no?

In all honesty Dan Molls out performed every inside linebacker on the Steelers roster this pre season.

I understand level of competition.

There were no surprising cuts.

Veteran offensive lineman Guy Whimper, linebackers Chris Carter and Howard Jones, tight end David Paulson, receiver Derek Moye (Rochester/Penn State), rookie tight end Rob Blanchflower (seventh-round pick), cornerback Shaquille Richardson (fifth-round pick) and defensive lineman Josh Mauro were released.

Also cut were tight end Bryce Davis; cornerbacks Isaiah Green and Dayonne Nunley (Gateway); safety Ross Ventrone (Chartiers Valley); running backs Josh Harris and Stephen Houston; defensive linemen Ethan Hemer, Roy Philon and Nick Williams; linebacker Dan Molls; quarterback Brendon Kay; wide receiver Lanear Sampson and offensive linemen Graham Pocic and Will Simmons.

The biggest surprise could be Howard Jones, a rookie out of Shepherd College who had five tackles and two fumble recoveries in the preseason.

Many of those released could be signed to the practice squad if they clear waivers. The Steelers can sign up to 10 practice squad players after noon Sunday.

Probably true if Gil said it, but did he say whether or not he was a better special teams player than our #52 or #53 roster guy would have been???

The Cowboy fans I talked to said he was beaten out by an UDFA and looked bad. I also trust Lake to get the most of the DBs.

Remember, the Steelers had Webb in for a pre-draft visit in 2013 and were rumored to be targeting him. The Cowboys picked him in the 4th round one pick ahead of the Steelers. The Steelers ended up taking Landry Jones with the next pick and then drafted Terry Hawthorne in the 5th.

Had the Cowboys not drafted Webb, I think that Webb and not Jones would have been the pick. If true, the Jones pick is essentially a moot issue now- we're in the same situation now as if the Steelers drafted Webb in the fourth and picked Jones up as an UDFA. Hopefully Webb fits our scheme better than the Cowboys'.

I thought for sure with your username you'd mention the W&M connection between Tomlin and Webb

Yeah, I'm a W&M graduate. I came in as a freshman a few years after Tomlin graduated.

I would have mentioned that Webb is a W&M guy if no one had noticed it, but it's already been brought up several times in this thread. It's obviously a factor for why Webb was on the Steelers' radar in the first place. The Cowboys had a few W&M guys on their roster when they drafted Webb, so they must have someone who scouts the CAA or W&M in particular.

The Ravens signed Derek Cox, W&M CB, former 3rd Round pick of the Jags and 2010 Pro Bowl alternate, but cut him yesterday. The Steelers could swoop in and grab him as well, though the indications are that the Ravens are going to re-sign him.

Edit: Of course, our best football alum Darren Sharper has been making us all very proud lately. We went from having a possible NFL HOF alum and renaming our football practice facility for him to having to be embarrassed by our association with an apparent serial rapist.

Webb and Mcain are two terrible Cb one from last year and the other from Preseason . Lake is not a miracle worker with garbage to work with.
