How often have their reaches panned out for them? Not talking about just being able to stick with the team, but performing to the level expected of the pick.
Finally retired: 31DEC25

He finally quit: 13JAN26

A good question... I think we can safely mark Dud Dupree off that list.

I wonder, if what has happened the past two seasons, if these 'visits' haven't taken on a more nuanced approach and are actually used as a tool to rule players out.

The thing about the draft every year is that players will drop and while many will point to how the Steelers shouldn't be so quick to jump on these players, like a Mendenhall, or whoever, but sometimes it does work out for us. DeCastro was supposed to go much earlier and he fell to us and that worked out terrific.

Also, I would like to point out that there were some that thought we reached on the top 3 picks of the 2017 draft. People thought we reached when we took Watt, thought we reached in picking JuJu in round 2, and especially thought we reached for James Conner in round 3. How did that work out?? All 3 played in the Pro Bowl last season.

He’s not a fit. I think he’d have a long and frustrating path to PT in Pittsburgh. Cover 3 bail to the max. That’s dick lebeau ball only even more cushion on run downs.

A. They didn’t go to PSU pro day, an event they often attend
B. The difference in CB value from about CB3 to CB20 is minimal

IIRC, Tombert pro days are about as important as private visits in predicting the pick. It is very rare that the pick was not seen by at least Tomlin or Colbert.

At the time, Shazier was considered a reach. We didn't know the Cowboys were getting ready to take him with the next pick. He was a home run selection, but I don't remember seeing him top 20 leading up to the draft. Watt somewhat was as well. His stock was rising, but pre-draft I hardly ever recall seeing him in the first round until right up to the draft. Bell wasn't mocked as high as we took him, was a round too high reach by most. Don't recall many having James Conner going in the third, people shit their pants when we took him and he was awesome last year.

But yeah, they've swung and missed on their reaches. Burns was a huge reach. Davis was a reach as well and has mostly disappointed. Golson was a panicked reach. Edmunds looks like a bum and was a fourth round talent that we took in the first. Dri Archer? I'd throw him in too.

ol skool wrote:I figure another thing worth doing is working out which players on B2B’s list you’ve never once considered a 1st rounder, but the Steelers could reach for nonetheless.

This is his 30-60 range:
LB Tre Lamar
EDGE Chase Winovich
EDGE Charles Omenihu
DL Dexter Lawrence
DL Dayton Mack
CB Trayvon Mullen
DB Julian Love
OL Erik McCoy
TE Jace Sternberger

Take Lawrence and McCoy off that list, since I have considered them first rounders. The reach picks that jump out at me are Omenihu, Love and Lamar. In that order.

Lamar would be apocalyptic. Like the worst-case scenario.

So another Jervis?
