No hot seat...no bow shot.
When the 2019 season kicks off, Coach Aviators will be comfortably standing on the sidelines with a new contract extension in hand.
CORRECT!!
that's exactly how to read AR2 today -
1. He didn't say he "would not commit" to extend tomlin - he said, they will deal with it in the summertime, which is exactly when they always deal with such things.
2. you can guarantee that Tomlin gets an extension if he wants it.
3. AR2 sees the year as a success - we almost won division, he says, if we didn't have a lousy kicker. THAT'S IT -ITS ALL THE KICKER'S FAULT!
4. they didn't fire Butler or Smith, which means they view this season favorably.
5. AR2 doesnt see the team as a "dumpster fire" - if he did, big changes would come. They didn't because he sees no problem.
6. welcome to more mediocrity going forward -- but with the browns and ravens improving, we may actually have a losing record next year, which would not be at all surprising.

I'm actually hopeful for the future when Danny takes over. It'll be a plus to once again have a football person in charge. Who knows how long it will be, though. EMR is only 66, so he could be at this another 10-15 years.

Maybe Tomlin will get pissed because Rooney isn't letting him use his gut to make replay decisions and quits. Please!
Howard Griffith had to resort to chop-blocking him during the 1997 AFC Championship Game. An incredulous Kirkland asked Griffith, “Why do you have to use cheap tactics like chop-blocking?” Griffith replied “Why do you have to be a 300-pound linebacker?”

I think the last time Tomlin's contract was extended it was in August, so there's plenty of time for EMR to extend Tomlin. If September comes and the new season starts and Tomlin still hasn't been extended, I would find that interesting.

So what you're saying is, the owners of the Steelers will alternate between Arts and Dans, and the Arts will suck, but the Dans will be good.

Well, Art Rooney, Jr. might be the best, most important Rooney that there ever was.
I'd rank them:
1. Dan Rooney
2. Art Rooney, Jr.
3. The Chief
4. Rooney Mara
5. EMR
6. Dan Rooney, Jr.

I translate this as...Mike Tomlin is on the hot seat.
It’s progress.
This is the quote that concerns me. " we finished a half game of winning the division" No you shit the bed and gave up a commanding lead in the division.
That’s their goal, to win the division. That’s been their goal for a long time. NE goal is the SB. Big difference.

The vultures like Shannon Sharpe, Madden, James Harrison, and Manny Sanders are falling over themselves to take shots at the org, the team, the coaches, Ben.
So then explain why these 'haters' are lining up to take shots and discredit Tomlin and the franchise? Why would 'respectable' once long time players want to disrespect one of the most respectable franchises in the league? Where there's smoke as the old saying goes? How many other ex-players have talked this much about the 'circus' in the past? Hines Ward? Jerome Bettis? Troy Polamalu? Ike Taylor? Brett Keisel? None of those players ever had anything bad to say about the 'circus'. Why is that? One of my opinionated reasons are, Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers have become entitled complacent douchebags. Tomlin has fostered this type of mentality by not stopping the entitled diva mentality. Instead he embraces it and encourages it. In the least tolerates it thereby enabling it.
Ordinarily, you asshats here are the first to have proper bullshit detectors engaged when it comes to the sports media of the world and absolute lying sacks of shit, but when they support your cause, they're 100% honest and factual. I see.
B2B, are you kidding me? What the fuck season have you been watching? This team was 7-2-1 at one point and ended up 9-6-1 and missed winning the division missing the playoffs. That my friend is a total collapse no matter how you try to disguise it. Every bit of negative information expressed about this franchise is untrue? Only fitting the 'asshats' agenda? Come on dude.
I'm really disappointed in this year's result and this AB garbage + losing Munchak business is a huge pain in the ass.
Munchak claims it was only about family. Well according to this franchise's history they are a family. So to leave, Munchak had to feel differently about that Steeler family environment. I think the whole family reason was the perfect opportunity for Munchak to get out of the trainwreck alive. Good for him. I don't blame him.
However, I think it's stupid to panic. You have Ben F. Roethlisberger and some good talent around him. Let him play the game the way he plays it, surround him with players who buy in, add some key talent to the defense, fix the PK situation... these are all doable things, no matter who the coach is, and it could be the difference between 9-6-1 and no playoffs and a Super Bowl win. They had a terrible year where nearly everything that could go wrong did, every bounce and penalty that could change the game pretty much went against them––and if they had made the playoffs, just about everyone here would have picked them to beat any team in the postseason aside from NE in Foxboro.
All the Steeler Nation 'asshats' ask of Ben is to refine his craft and reduce his INT tendencies. Not perfection. Just slow the INT/TO tendency. I don't care who it is they play. That said, I'm a firm believer that good things come to those that make them happen. Most those 'misfortunate' scenario's your talking about could have been avoided one way or another. I realize that even doing everything right sometimes results in something still going bad. They were cut short in some of those instances sure. Most of them were self inflicted.
Instead of trying to blow everything up, I am convinced the team needs somebody to calm everybody the fuck down. "Everybody shut the fuck up and listen to me. gets AB and Ben in same room) You're good... you're good...(points back and forth) we're pretty fucking good when we play right. In fact there's nobody better. So, let's quit fighting each other like teenage girls and saying shit to the media or posting bullshit on instagram or talking on our radio shows or talking through James Harrison or Bruce Arians and let's concentrate on winning some fucking football games. We do that and all of this will be like a fart smell in the wind."
This last paragraph I fully agree with. Couldn't have said it better myself. Get back in the classroom back on the field and back to winning football. Excellent!
That would yield a much better result than panicking.
Again, fully agree.

Ben had the 4th lowest INT rate and the lowest since 2014. He had the 4th best QBR and the 15th best QB rating... an indication that drops and deflections were a big part of the INT total. And then there's the whole forcing it to AB to make him happy business.
IMO, you want Ben to make plays, and his offense was his best ever in TDs per drive, RZ TD percentage, he set a record for TDs, he led the league in yards... and all of it in a year where he lost his best RB and pretty much had nobody to take the top off the D. and probably a year where he had to deal with TWO HUGE distracting prima donnas every day.
Ben is not the problem here.
The haters are out now because it's a chance to take a free shot at Ben, the media gossip business is at an all-time high, and the character of guys like Keisel-Polamalu-Ward-Taylor is far superior to that of AB-Sanders-Deebo.
You heard Ryan Clark. You heard Ramon Foster. You heard Vince Williams. Those guys are far more representative of character.
The season went south but the coverage of the drama is nearly all manufactured by media. They are insane.
Munchak turned down a chance to interview with Miami, where he was reportedly in strong contention for a HC gig. He explicitly said he was happy in PIT and there was nothing to the move except for a chance to be with his daughter and granddaughter at this stage of his life. He seems like a stand-up guy, so I'll take him at his word.

This franchise is lost.
We blew a commanding division lead to a rookie gimmick QB and gimmick offense.
We had our OL, Ben/AB/JuJu/McDonald/good role players, great blocking as a unit both in the run game and passing game.
Mike Tomlin is not the guy to lead this team in the current era of the nfl. Teams are shedding dumb guys regarding offense at the HC position, and hiring guys based on criteria that better fits the current league.
I cannot describe how painful it is to watch a strategic idiot at the HC position, not know how to get the most out of this QB and the talent around him on that side of the football. It's one of the worst coaching jobs I have ever seen in sports.

Bouchette took Rooney’s comments on Tomlins contract to be “let’s wait and see on your performance””
Cowher wanted more $$ after winning the SB and Tomlin certainly doesn’t warrant a re-up for more money at the present time
All remember Rooney’s didn’t give Cowher the big extension in 06
Baby steps to the exit folks

As I've said many times, the moment in my signature was the moment I lost all respect for Mike Tomlin as a HC. That moment removed all hope I had for this team both in 2018 and going forward.
If he can't get that right, nothing else matters.

How would you know this exactly? They went 13-3 last year and to the AFCCG the year before.

Almost as bad as sitting in a stadium of Raiders fans while they laugh out loud that our HC is too fucking stupid to call a time out while their offense takes their time winding clock.
And most Raider fans are mouth breathing numbskulls that struggle counting to 10 as well. Even they knew he was giving them the game.
Tomlin is just paying lip-service to change and needing to do things differently.
If he actually believed that, if Tomlin actually believed he was underperforming.....then there's no way BOTH Butler and Danny Smith are back.
Tomlin is never going to change. He believes he does his job well, and failure is only a result of a lack of player focus and execution. He can't even see his own responsibility in that. It's why he will never win another SB - myself and others have said this for years. At least no one is still arguing that Tomlin isn't a babysitter and that professional football players don't need one.
