I think the big difference between the Ravens org and the Steelers org is that vision of the future as other have stated. They draft guys who fit exactly what they want them to do, regardless of how athletic they are or how high their ceiling might be. I always here "Best Player Available" at draft time, but does that player fit the mold we want for our team and our system (you know that whole square peg in round hole thing)? Recently, Tomlin seems to be enamored more with speed, athleticism, and position flexibility. Though those things have their place in their evaluation process, but they don't truly define a "football" player. Fuck the player that's an "athlete", I want a nasty ass motherfucker who only likes to destroy the "enemy". I know this is the softer side of the NFL now these days, but I would like to see a tough as nails, hard hitting team in the middle of the field. I had no problem with the Steelers taking the penalties for hitting the Raven's players last night, I just wish it would have been done in the first half. Hit them so hard, they can no longer produce kids and see how many of them want to go across the middle of the field! I'll take all the penalties the fucking refs want to through at the steelers, but by the time the first quarter is over, every TE, WR, and RB will be scared to death to catch the fucking ball. Celebrate the hit with enthusiasm across the board not only on the field, but on the sidelines as well. I can see it now, tomlin on the sideline with a shit eating grin on his face holding two thumbs up after we just destoyed their TE and everyone else chest bumping - let the fucking flags fly! Let the team think we are totally psychotic! That's the Steelers I'd like to see. That's the football I'd like to see!
But I see the Ravens bring guys in who fit what they want to do - not because they are athletic, but because they fit the system better. Steelers don't...

I don't think this is a luxury we can afford anymore.
We can still hit hard AND not get penalized - just ask Green Bay's and Denver's offense...
penalties cost precious yards, and precious yards lead to opponents' scoring, and with the state of this team, we can't afford to spot them anything.

then our opponent comes out in the no-huddle like the Browns in the second half and catch us with our heads up our ass, not knowing what the fuck is going on.

...and the whole team looks like a bunch of fools for just barely eeking out a win from what started as complete domination of our opponent...

No, fuck that noise!

it's ok to briefly acknowledge when you make a good play,
but especially if you see no-huddle, get your ass back on your side of the LOS and get set.
Real men don't need to showboat - and these fucking kids nearly embarrassed themselves with that shit last week.

Celebrate when you're on the sidelines and our offense has the ball...

I'm not necessarilly just talking about this year alone, right now, I think the Bengals are better. I'm just talking about a long term vision type of thing, I think the Steelers have lost that and are just aimlessly wandering, while the Ravens and the Bengals seem more focused in their decision making, if that makes sense?

Each of the Bengals, Ravens and Browns have a vision for what they want to be.

What is the vision for the Steelers of the future? It's not obvious to me, but I'm just a fan. The problem is it's not obvious to Tomlin, Colbert or the Rooneys.

This team has the feel of the 2003 team. At first It fooled everyone by kicking the Rats ass in their house and then were completely exposed against the Chiefs and never recovered. They lost a ton of games in a row and then played .500 ball the rest of they way. Structurally that team was a lot better. Gandy would come back in 04, Troy was a different player is sophomore year and of course Ben came to town.

Unfortunately we only got a half of kick ass play before it turned back into a pumpkin. This team just doesnt seem like its a player or two away. Something just looks off. Since Sapp said old slow and done I think its been taken to heart and the attempt is in all cases younger and faster and at all costs. Forget about height, weight, anchor, instincts, man streak. If any of the traditional metrics happen to be in a player its almost by accident.

Its almost like Sapp's words are a curse that turned Tomlin into Al Davis. As long as you are zipperier than the Cowher player you replaced then its all good. If Ben leaves expect a Terrell Pryor kind of QB. At least he'll be fast, multiple and inaccurate as hell.

So where are we? A good comparison IS Al Davis's Oakland Raiders. Al Davis has been long dead and they still suck. They are lucky though because their obsession with speed uber alles is over. This Pittsburgh regime isn't done wrecking this team with nothing but speed at the expense of everything else.

The Steelers are now Oakland East, Al Davis style.

All that said we run into a very weak schedule in the fall all the way up to Turkey Day. Its possible sunshine could fall on the team once more due to terrible competition .

honest question here. Did you say "it's 1 loss" after the previous 16 losses in the previous 2 seasons? Because the problems we have now are the identical problems we've had the last 2+ seasons. They aren't new problems. The problems are correctable, but they haven't been corrected for the last 2 seasons, why would they get corrected now? Not trying to bust your chops here Van, I WANT to believe that the problems can be corrected. I just don't think we WILL correct the problems.

I didnt feel the need, as the board wasnt having a meltdown of menopausal proportions. I likely would have, because every season is different. The passed 2 seasons have fuck all too do with this one. And it's a completely overhauled roster, for the most part.

I expected growing pains early.

But see, that's the most frustrating part!

The problems ARE correctable.
The problems ARE NOT being corrected!

Everybody typically blames one or more of these 4:
Tomlin
Colbert
LeBeau
Haley

Ironically, the safest one on that list as I see it is Todd Haley.
At least he's accomplishing his stated goals and Ben is not (quite) getting beaten up as much.

The other three can go yesterday AFAIAC.

Fire Colbert - For years, there's been a disconnect between what this guy perceives as talent and what the coaches can work with.
...obviously...
Let's give Bill Cowher his shot at GM - all here seem to agree he is/would be a great evaluator of talent.

Fire Tomlin - seriously, we can do better

Retire LeBeau - really, it's just time.
You can't keep setting up Ike and Troy like that and expect them to not kill us with penalties in today's NFL.
What's more, while you've been covering your "bases", these whipper-snappers have either forgotten how to tackle or haven't yet learned.
Riddle me this: Just how many of the Rats ground yards were after initial contact last night anyway?!

Really, Todd Haley is the only one I would keep around for the sake of continuity, and NOT as a HC...

Same argument was made with Farrior, Smith, Hampton. Some of you want change for the sake of change. Like the next guy in line absolutely can do no worse. Its going full retarded, because of the benefit of hindsight. The grass ISN'T always greener. The staff & FO did EXACTLY what they were being criticised for, & without immediate beneficial turnaround, it's time for them to get the axe. Again, full retard.

Here's a fucking thought, let's get further than 2 games in before we have to change the tampon. Was I hoping for a win? God dawned right...do I expect a shitter once in awhile on a short week, vs a rival fuck yeah. Saying the Steelers are the doormat of the AFCN after this is chicken shit at whiplash speed. You fucking guys are getting to douche level.

This.

Did anyone watch last night and not see the same damn 8-8 team as the last two years? It's literally mirror images, not only with respect to average personnel, but with respect to coaching, lack of execution, penalties and stupid costly/untimely turnovers.

It's unreal that the same things have persisted over the span of basically 2 and a half years (actually going back to the Tebow loss, which is a total fucking embarassment in it's own right) In fact, it's been so long since we have seen any semblance of a well oiled, playoff contender legitimate team, that even if Tomlin et al would inspire, lead and coach-up even a modicum of improvement, myself and the fan base would probably be doing backflips up and down Mt. Washington.

So I'm saying, DO SOMETHING GODDAMN IT.

Orange, I respect you you're a level headed guy. I felt like I addressed this in a previous post, in the same thread...they DID do a whole lot of something in the offseason...the time they address previous season's issues.

No one calling for heads is giving those moves a chance, after one loss, on a short week.

Its the Ravens, I get it. The sky isnt falling yet.

I'm with the Van. If the PS get dominated Sunday night, then I'm going to be in full panic mode. As of now, I'm going to wait and see the response.

They did something with personnel.

What does not seem to have changed are all the issues with execution and attitude.

This is why many of us were not willing to go with the "it's just preseason. The games don't count" canard that was trotted out when the team looked uninspired and sloppy during preseason.

If you say 8-8 the last two seasons was unacceptable, then there should be some indication in your practice, your preparation and your play that you are really SERIOUS that 8-8 the past two seasons was unacceptable.

I can honestly say I see the players have changed, but I don't see the requisite attitude change...from either players or coaches.

I see young players playing far worse than they did last year.

For zero apparent reason.

Gilbert was never good, but when was he THIS bad?

Worilds?

Timmons?

Cortez Allen?

Mike Mitchell?

Heyward?

The only young players really playing well and actually improving are Bell, Wheaton and, to some extent, Jervis.

This team is starting to remind me of the Pirates 10 years ago.

Young players start off with a bang, only to turn into shit the very next year.

I see a bunch of room for growth on this team with the exception of OT.

I might well have a slightly differing take after a rewatch...bit I doubt it. The biggest problems on the team are ILB, LDE/package DT, and RT...though I'm anything but convinced at LT.

Timmons should improve as he acclimates to the buck...but he has real problems in packages as well this year. But it's not a stretch to expect Timmons to improve. Shaz has real limitations, but has been close to serviceable and will continue to get better as he gets use to NFL size and speed.

Thomas is fucking terrible. My impression is he is almost an average player when he's fresh...but 10 plays in his feet quit moving, he doesn't lock out, and he gives ground like an OT in pass pro. Tuitt needs more snaps, and it's time to get a look at what Mccullers can do at NT with Mcclendons injury...and imo it's time to send Garvin packing and make Mauro active...we need 3 tech snaps and I don't view Mccullers feet good enough to play in packages.

We have problems at RT. The back ups suck. I never liked W Johnson and I think he blows at all 5 positions he can't play. Beachum has been serviceable thus far. All we can do here is offer smoke to Joboo on Gilbert...unless Munch can clear waivers. Gilbert has actually done a good job run blocking...there are some mitigating circumstances on last week...but overall he's been very poor in pass pro.

But the Rats game was no where near as bad as game 3 Eagles 08. We went 0 for November in 2005. Gents and Rats have recently won SB's after 2-6 finishes. Ton of new starters on defense...the offense has strung together 6 poor quarters...but mostly shot themselves in the foot last week. I think we are playing at about the level we ended last season at...with alot of room for growth on defense.

I'll tell you this...I can't fucking stand Tomlin...to me he's as corporate fake as a 3 dollar bill and as a picker of the flesh...he's Bang Bros in a world full of Hefs...but with this many new starters he gets mid season before I start pointing my finger at him...I'll save my coaching bitching until/if there are grounds for it...if I carried past failures around with me 24-7 there would be no point in not giving up at almost everything...and it's not like there is a choice here.

We agree on Tomlin. I despise him. I cannot stand the guy. He lost me a while back....too much emphasis on cool sounding cliches and not enough actual results.

I can't wait for a new HC. Granted the grass isnt always greener, however in this case, I think 90% of the posters on this board would be an upgrade.

I get it.

But I'm going to squeeze every ounce of possibility out of the season before I become subversive.

Lebeau and Munch are winners in life that understand hard work and incremental improvement even if you don't like there football minds. Tomlin is fake and malleable or he would never have got the job with 1 year of DC experience. I've seen worse rosters and worst staffs turn it around.

I think one of the big mistakes we all make from labels like "all pro" is that players that achieve that level are always at that level...but I've seen time and time again teams get momentum going and jags beat guys we never thought they could play with. Every year SB winners turn jags into high priced FAs. I just can't see bailing week 3.

Can't find much to argue with in this post except I am not as patient as you.

I knew the defense would struggle, but some guys like Thomas AND Mitchell look so bad I can't see how they'll improve.

And I still don't feel as if the offense, which still keeps shooting itself in the foot (and not just Gilbert and JBrown, but BEN too), can carry the defense until it gets its legs.

We see every year that every game is important...we missed the playoffs by one game in both 2012 and 2013. Can't drop winnable games because we shoot ourselves in the foot.

Right now as of week two? Bengals. But that can and likely will change going forward. Still a bunch of football to play.

I have no problems with the criticisms of this team and Tomlin.

I'm just pointing out it's real early to call it hopeless.

I'm not that down on Mitchell yet. The S's haven't been torched deep. It's tough to bitch at S's about run support with such poor gap integrity featuring Dline on roller skates obscuring angles.

Fucking A right. Thomas might be the biggest atrocity on the field, on any given snap. A rookie McCuller's at least can hold his gap, & at the very least, make it 11 on 10 most downs. His size alone demands two, even if he doesn't read his gaps.

It's a dilemma, really.
With all my heart and soul, I root for this Steelers team to pull their heads out of their asses, catch fire, and go on an unstoppable run to the 7th Lombardi.
IMHO, the only thing keeping them from doing so are their own self doubts, lack of discipline, and faintness of heart - all of which are Tomlin's responsibility, and all of which he falls way short on instilling in this team.
...obviously...

But certainly if they COULD get it together and go on another historic run like we know the Steelers can, it would mean Tomlin, Colbert, and the whole bunch would keep their jobs.

What to do, what to do... :?

If the Steelers went on such a historic run, then you wouldn't really need to fire anyone.

The Bengals completely destroyed the Falcons yesterday, without A.J. Green for most of it.

They look like one of the top 3 teams in football.
*reserves the right to roots for losses*
