No way do the Steelers push Haskins ahead of Rudolph on the official depth chart this year
Rudolph isn’t great but he a very well liked try hard teammate who does everything you’d want a 2 QB to do other than play like a starter.
If Ben gets injured and Rudolph has several bad outings maybe we see Haskins get some snaps.... but other than that .....no way

Yeah, Rudolph is safe as the #2. There is no competition and there never was for that #2 job. Haskins doesn't know the offense like Mason does and he doesn't have the familiarity of throwing to the WRs, etc.
The preseason is full of vanilla defenses, not game planning to any meaningful extent. But when the intensity and planning is there, when Haskins has to face real defenses I think he is going to struggle and that is perfectly natural. New player, new system, a lot of new pieces on offense trying to find themselves as starters, etc.
I am not down on the player by any means, I am just pragmatic, there is a plan in place with Haskins but it can't be rushed. It would be stupid to just crown him as the #2 when he hasn't earned it. We need him to be hungry, stay hungry, develop a chip on his shoulder. We need him to adapt the work ethic and desire of a 6th round QB and not be the entitled former first round flop with issues.
So, in year one with the Steelers he is the #3. He watches and learns, he continues to build up his body, his legs, his mechanics. I have been real impressed with his game below the waist, meaning his legs, his mobility and his quickness. He won't ever be confused with Lamar Jackson but he is not a statue, he can move in the pocket, he can run with the football.
In year two, say hypothetically Ben comes back for another year, Haskins should be in a real competition for that #2 spot. If Haskins wins then Rudolph is probably traded. If Ben retires then Haskins and Rudolph compete for the starting job and both are kept regardless of the outcome.
Haskins is really in a perfect situation and the Steelers have the proper dynamics in place to develop Haskins.

Most of Haskins' issues as a pro can be traced right back to Billionaire Dan and the WTF pushing him into a role way too fast. In that respect, I kind of love how the Steelers are playing this.

I've been very impressed with how Haskins has come across in his interviews. He seems pretty smart, sincere and humble. It's a perfect situation for a young player trying to find his way back on track and he seems more than capable and willing to do the necessary work.
If successful, I see his ceiling as a good-to-very good QB and his floor as a very good backup-to-lower level starter. When I think of what could be, I think of Ryan Tannehill for his ceiling and Jacoby Brissett for his floor. It's a very good gamble considering their investment and where the Steelers are in the starting QB lifecycle.

Haskins has said he's enjoying playing football again for the first time since Ohio State, and it shows. Body language in interviews and on the field are a complete 180 since arriving and getting acclimated. The WTF really did a number on that kid. My NCAA allegiance is obviously showing, but I'm definitely rooting for the guy.
I'll add this: we complain a lot about Tomlin's "culture" on the PS, but when you take an honest look at some of the other teams in the league, we've got it pretty good here in that department, and have had for a long time.

I would love Haskins to develop into a starter quality QB someday. He does have some raw tools, but even when he's playing fairly well you can see all the same warts show through: a) sloppy footwork b) inconsistent throwing mechanics c) mediocre field vision and d) poor anticipation.
He's got a cannon and his mobility is very good. But, so does Josh Dobbs. Is he better than Dobbs? Sure. But, in a full camp and preseason, he still hasn't beat out Rudolph (who has been solid but nothing spectacular).
I just don't see Haskins ceiling as high as some of you guys do. I think he can become a better QB no doubt. But, I also think those weaknesses of his will always creep in and limit him.
In short....we better be thinking about drafting Ben's successor if we want more Super bowls after Ben. Because there is no other SB capable QB on the roster right now unless we have a 1976 Steeler or 2000 level Ravens Defense on the other side.

This is going to be Haskins 3rd or 4th offense in the last 5 years and his 5th head coach in he last 5 years.

Tomlin
The stability presented by the Steelers may be the best thing to happen to Haskins since he threw 50 TD's his last year at tOSU.
