Want to revisit since people referring to Baker’s contract a lot. This thread is getting the timeline wrong. He just signed that extension in March 2024. He was coming off a great 2023 season. The question was would Tampa Bay franchise tag him. They chose not to as a sign of goodwill as they were close to a new contract. If Mayfield truly tested the market he would have gotten more. He gave the Bucs a bit of a deal for salvaging his career in 2023. This is very much comparable to Wilson.bradshaw2ben wrote: ↑Tue Nov 26, 2024 5:42 pm1... Dak Prescott... $60,000,000

$48,517,647/per at age 32 was the contract Wilson most recently signed as a FA
Ben's last multiyear contract was at $34,000,000, 6 years ago, when cap was $188.2M and he was age 37
Look at the range I have bolded above and add cap inflation. Cousins (36) signed with 2024 cap at 255.4. Baker (29) and Rodgers (probably a pretty good comp) signed for $33.3 & $36.5M when cap was $224.8M. Stafford (35) signed for $40M when cap was 208.2M.
Throw out the Mahomes number, b/c his ultra-long contract makes the average deceptive. They'll do a restructure or extension soon, because his cap hit the next three seasons will be in line with his status, about $67M/per.
Carr & Daniel Jones are both overpaid, but this happens once or twice every year when teams lose the musical chairs, get desperate to not rebuild, and aren't in a position to draft a guy. Hell, look at that Dak Prescott contract.
Mayfield is underpaid, partially because he was coming off three down years, not starting. When they do his extension this next offseason, you see what his contract is then.
Geno Smith is the only QB in the entire NFL who was signed to be the starter, is not on a rookie deal, and who is making less than $38.5M cap-adjusted. He signed after exactly one year as a good starter, after a long career of being average to below average. Maybe just above that slot is your Justin Fields 2025 number, if he's signed as a starter somewhere.
Wilson will be age 36. 2025 cap is expected to be $260M.
Roethlisberger (37) cap-adjusted: $51.8M
Stafford (35) cap-adjusted: $50M
Cousins (36) cap-adjusted: $45.8M
Rodgers (39) cap-adjusted: $43.4M
Mayfield (29) cap-adjusted: $38.5M
I think Wilson's market value is somewhere near $45-46M. He might take a few million less for a good situation (if he perceives that Pittsburgh is that). he's unlikely to go below where Derek Carr & Daniel Jones reside. Call his Pittsburgh asking price $41M.
How much would you sign (extend?) Russell Wilson for?

Baker’s previous contract was a 1-year deal for $8.5M
Baker had a series of years either not starting or playing poorly
There’s no way Baker has the ego of Wilson
These are all factors into why it’s not comparable. Baker is closer to Geno Smith. I would think Wilson has his sights on comping to Aaron Rodgers.

- Wilson has already pocketed a boatload of money
- Wilson already has a HOF resume
- Wilson is married to a smoking hot woman who herself is worth millions
Tom Brady was willing to take a discount to get rings.
I'm not saying Wilson will play for peanuts, but I wouldn't just automatically assume he goes to the other extreme ala Rodgers.

I don't think Rodgers was a big payday. When he signed his last deal, Wilson was already all of the things you say he is now. Even a deal is still going to be $40M plus. I mean, Wilson signing for league minimum this year was sort of the discount. Maybe he does it again, this time when it hurts his pocketbook. We shall see.Pabst wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2024 4:44 pmFor another perspective:bradshaw2ben wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2024 4:21 pmBaker has never been to let alone won a SB

Trade Low Watt for multiple picks and all cap worries are gone for a few years

The franchise tag is also an option. The number to tag a QB in 2024 was $38 million. Looks to be about 41.5 million in 2025. I’ll be shocked if they go to $40m AAV on Russ. My guess is 3 years for $110M with about $80 million of it guaranteed.

A more imaginative coach might be able to make your masturbatory fantasy work.
We don’t have that guy.
The Steelers are among the NFL’s worst teams in total offense (30th) and total defense (28th). Highest paid defense in the league by far. We are lucky to have Mike Tomlin.
