Kudos to Sutter and Flower for coming up big in the last game.

There's no cap in the playoffs, so expect to see Doumolin and Harrington up. At WB/S, the Doumo-Chorney pairing combined to allow 6-even strength goals the entire year. I wouldn't mind seeing those 2 paired on the 3rd line while Lovejoy or Scuds gets the healthy scratch. I don't expect that to happen though.

Our D corp is decimated with injuries, and yet they are playing solidly against the best team in hockey

Lovejoy/Cole are a big reason for that

They've played surprisingly well. In fact, a lot of the Pens usual scapegoats have contributed above their recent play. Kunitz apparently exists, Sutter is getting a lot of chances, I've even liked some things I've seen out of Beau Bennett, who seems much more willing to get his hands dirty. Lapierre is in full troll mode (loved what he attempted to do with the empty netter at the end of the last game), Downie stayed out of the box, Crosby is scoring goals, Fleury is playing great and seems to have shaken the playoff demons (although, as others have noted, that appeared to be the case last year as well).

I mean, I still think we're heavy underdogs, and winning 4 games is a far different task than winning one game, but I think we have a puncher's chance in this series.

Chorney looked 100x's better vs Game 1. If Erhoff returns he better not be the one getting scratched.

Kinda weird though that I thought Chorney never would have a chance to make next years roster, but he's certainly impressed me with his play.

sigh....here we go again.

Here comes the wonderful fact machine that you seem to be allergic to.

Despres since trade: 16 GP , 1 G, 5 A, 6 pts. +2

Lovejoy since trade: 20 GP, 1 G, 2 A, 3 pts. -7

He sure throws up some sick screens though...on his own goalie...

Mind you, these are two different goals in the same game.

Despres managed to make Rob Scuderi look like he didn't belong in a beer league...Lovejoy? ehhhh

Scuderi w/Despres:
SCA/GP 5v5: 6.4
GA60 5v5: 1.71

W/o Despres:

GA60 5v5: 2.52
5v5 goal diff: -14

Ever since Lovejoy joined the Pens, his play has declined. Experts who cover the Anaheim Ducks knew that Lovejoy was over-deployed and his perceived value was improved by playing alongside Cam Fowler. They believed that Lovejoy was a capable third-pairing defender, except Pittsburgh isn’t using him in that role because of injury woes.

So now Pittsburgh has traded away Despres—who has been responsible for Scuderi’s rebound—for a defender who cannot replace him. In fact, in the 26:31 that Scuderi and Lovejoy have played together, their goals against per sixty played in an astounding 4.53.

“The good thing (for me) is he’s huge,” said a grinning James Wisniewski who was traded to the Ducks on the same day as the 6’4” Despres. “He’s got a big body, he can skate like the wind and he plays physical. For me, he can do a lot of the dirty work,” he added with a chuckle, “I’m only 5’11”. But it’s been great, he has good offensive ability, he’s smart, plays with an edge; I think we are going to work very well going into the playoffs.”

"HERP, DERP DESPRES IS NOT A GOOD SKATER." All-caps moron steel.

As for Despres getting "benched again"

The Ducks defensive depth is so deep, they're benching defensemen to keep them fresh. http://www.latimes.com/sports/sportsnow ... story.html

That includes healthy scratching guys like Fowler and Wisnieswki.

1. Anaheim Ducks

The additions of James Wisniewski and Simon Despres along with the subtraction of Ben Lovejoy have helped the Ducks become one of the best teams in the NHL at possessing the puck based on the metrics that are available.

The Ducks entered play Thursday fifth in the NHL with a 53.8 even-strength shot-attempts percentage (SAT%) since March 2, according to War-on-Ice.com. Anaheim was 17th in the NHL at 50.5 SAT% heading into trade deadline day.
Wisniewski has a 55.7 SAT% and Despres a 53.1 SAT% since arriving in Anaheim. The Despres-for-Lovejoy trade with the Penguins has turned out to be a steal for the Ducks. Lovejoy has struggled with Pittsburgh while Despres has been effective in his role with Anaheim.

“I would expect that that would be criticized,” Rutherford said. “If we had [Christian] Ehrhoff and Letang playing, we could plug Lovejoy and [Ian] Cole where I expected they’d fit. One thing about Lovejoy that I said at the time: This is a trade that over time will not be in our favor. We traded a young player [Simon Despres] for him, but our hockey organization is basically a group of nine people, and [it was clear] the trade was made more for experience, a trade that would give us a better chance in the playoffs.”

The fans really think Lovejoy is great, too!

Do you actually watch the NHL? Have you seen Despres play on the Ducks? Jesus christ...

Also, learn to fucking spell....

Ben Lovejoy has been on the ice for 70% (7 of 10) of the goals against the Penguins this series. The Penguins will be eliminated in the first round tonight.

Simon Despres set up ANOTHER game-winning goal for the Ducks last night. The same goal clinched the series sweep for the Ducks. Simon Despres is going to the second round of the playoffs.

The Pirates recently played the Cubs in a four-game series.

Does anybody have any legitimate insight into the supposed "off-ice" reasons the Penguins had for making this boneheaded trade? I've heard it speculated with some regularity that GMJR basically caved to pressure from above/below to make the deal, and from a hockey standpoint it's pretty nonsensical, so I have to assume there were some ulterior motives in play.
