Butler deserves another year after the excitement I had about him after watching last season's team. BUT after these first three games I'm hugely disappointed. Yeah we won the first two games fairly convincingly, BUT lets face it, the defense had nothing to do with those wins. I mean, Jesus Christ, we're on pace for about 7 sacks this season. There is NO excuse for the defense to be going backwards at this juncture in the teams (This rosters) growth/development. Not to mention Ben's waning time.
Its IMPERATIVE the defense improves this season over last. So far it's gone the other way.
Kinda agree BUT where is the talent ? OLB except for maybe a very old Deebo is currently a TOTAL ZERO and thats after adding 2 rd 1 picks recently. ILB is almost as bad save for a probably not re signed Timmons
I think the D backfield is improving but with ZERO pass rush there AND a weak run D up the middle there is only so much you can do.
I guess you could look at it another way like this
1. Bud Dupree becomes just a solid player
2. We draft a good to great edge rusher in RD 1 this year
3. We draft a good to great Mack ILB in RD 2
4. We draft a good to great SS in RD 3
I those are doable. Maybe not guaranteed but doable.
Then consider
5. A good WR somewhere in rds 4 through 7
6. A Bettis Farrior Hartings quality type FA signing
I dont think this team is THAT far off
But more to your point, generally i am not a fan of signing former players who dont have much experience coaching as coaches. Particularly on a team where the OC and DC seem to hold alot of sway in defining their units.
