Interesting to hear how many balls Will Johnson is getting. Could be sort of a mini-break out year for him.

From yesterday-

Varying descriptions on the Bell Williams thing...I think of it as a split.

Worilds stiffed by Johnson and Poole...long way to go but nothing from JW since the pick off Archer.

Miller loses two more to Jones, splits with Moats.

Timmons over Bell deuce.

Shaz splits with Mccain and Davis, 0-2 vs Poole.

Williams 2-0 vs Davis.

So'ooto 2-0 vs W Johnson

H Jones 2-0 vs Maysonet.

Some gathered generalizations...Tuitt and H Jones most impressive newcomers...Decastro and Gilbert have played well...Heyward has picked up where he left off...V Williams has a number of big hits...Mccullers continues to surprise some...IT and TP look active and young...flip a coin over most disappointing Adams or L Jones.

I'd like to hear your personnel groupings that involve Shamarko. It either means him playing over Willie Gay as a slot CB (Gay is pretty good there) or over Troy as SS (Troy is not too shabby) or playing two SS types (either Troy or Shamarko would be negated somewhat by having deep responsibilities) or playing with 6 DBs.

Personally, I'm all for rotating talent everywhere except QB and OL (probably), but I don't think they are, which means very limited snaps for Shamarko, barring an injury to someone else.

he's getting dominated in blocking drills-- not good

We're running a 2 TE offense and we have only one decent TE blocker (Spaeth) assured of a roster spot and meaningful playing time. Heath wasn't very good last couple of years, now this.

those drills are designed for defense to win.

Put those young guys in a game situation where they have to make a read first then he eats them alive.

I am seeing why the Steelers didn't reach for a CB now in the draft.

Ike's pay cut essentially allowed them to go get Mike Mitchell and with Shamarko flying around they have to feel good about the middle of the field now.

Gay has always been better covering that area, Troy can now play his game (and not line up at LB like he did last year)

Timmons Shazier Troy Mitchell Shamarko Gay Ike Allen is a very nice mix of young speed and veteran players who know LeBeau's system

Really excited to see what these guys are going to do this year, haven't been this happy about the Defense in 3 or 4 years

Nonetheless, I'm excited about this group of young players the Steelers have brought in this offseason. It seems like everything I read about the draft picks, udfas, and free agents are making an impact.

Obviously Shamarko has no respect for Brown. You can tell from this that Brown's teammates probably don't like him much.

I think Shark is the first guy in if either Troy or Gay goes down. That's very valuable. I think he's part of the dime package. I think in some nickel packages he comes in instead of Gay; like when the opposing O has 2 pass catching TE threats on the field.

He should see a good amount of snaps in 2014 even if Troy and Gay stay healthy. If all goes as planned this will be one of those 'three-year-apprenticeship' situations that people love to harp on, but for good reason. Potential future HOFer is in front of him.

Read he's close, if not at 100%, & just as good as his rookie year with a better handle on his assignments, which is expected...the suprise is he hasn't lost speed.

Can't remember where I read it, could've been that fucking hack Wexall.

So, we saddled up and headed out to Lay-trobe. Got there slightly after 7 (didn't realize it was dahntahn). Plenty of seats.

Started off with Ben tossing it back and forth with AB stepping back each time. AB can throw a nice spiral! Time for a gadget play. Ben was teasing him tryint to get him to throw it right into his hands.

The crowd was into backs on backers. You can certainly hear the pop. The maylay developed very quickly. The defense practices on one of the field and the offense on the other --- only contributes to the "us vs. them" attitude.

Speed rushes were definitely the problem. Saw multiple defenders miss entirely. Spence has amazing acceleration. FWIW, I watched him at the end of practice walk off the field without a hitch or limp.

Tuitt is Large. So is Fangupo.

I was looking for Dangerfield to make a play but didn't see or hear him all night. Poole was being given a fair amount of carries, strangely enough. We were seated near some relative of Josh Harris who kept yelling... "Hit the hole baby!". The new RB wasn't even on the roster sheet --- but got a number of carries.

AB made a number of catches. The rest were spread around. Kashif Moore made a few, as did Lance Moore (and yes, he's small). Martavis Bryant made a number of nice catches. CJ Goodwin was back in but didn't catch anything (that I saw anyway).

On the 3rd 11x11, Ben was intercepted by Troy on a diving catch. Looked like someone didn't run the right route. Also watched Ross Ventrone play safety on the 3rd string defense.

The goal line drills were going out of the EZ. Munchak was there coaching after every rep, as well LeBeau. Ben took the last snap and headed upfield going all the way to the opposite EZ just to thrill the crowd (who ate it up).

Vince Williams also got a lot of work/tackles.

On the last play, handoff monkey missed a wide open Danny Coale in the center of the field.

Jervis/Jarvis was wrapped up and didn't play. I didn't see any kicking. The kickoff practice looked confused. Maybe I didn't understand but seemed like Smith spent a lot of time teaching.

Fireworks were damn good. And the parking was free.

;)

You guys can goad me all you want with this. My opinion/theory is that the big leader Maurkice might not be respected by some of his teammates. We'll likely never know if that is true.

I can tell you for sure that if I was his teammate and based on what I've seen from him on and off the field the past few years, he'd have to prove it to me. He has not earned my respect. Granted, what we see if not the whole picture.

I just want the fucker to live up to his reputation this year on the field. That's all I ask. Then I'll leave him alone, I promise 8-)

Thanks man, sounds like a hell of a time.

I thought AB had a couple of gadget plays tossing the rock last year...don't think any were TD's, or big gainers, for that matter.

I second that. Seems Porter has played a large role in the intensity. Like I said before, it seems he'd like to coach with pads on. Hands on teaching technique.

Gilbert shaping up fast for Steelers
Steelers offensive right tackle Marcus Gilbert always possessed the natural talent to excel in the NFL. Now, he believes he has developed the off-field habits that will help him take the next step in his career.

Gilbert, a second-round draft pick out of Florida in 2011, said he is feeling strong and confident after following a strict diet over the offseason that has improved his fitness level. If the first week of training camp is any indication, Gilbert is primed for a strong season. He has been one of the most impressive offensive linemen in the first week of workouts.

Gilbert has been a brick wall in one-on-one pass-rush drills and has teamed up with David DeCastro on the right side of the line to provide some running lanes in team drills.

"I wanted to be able to sustain and finish drives," Gilbert said Friday. "At times last year, I was winded at the end of drives and pretty tired. Now, I just feel like I'm in the best shape. I'm staying on top of the small things to help me stay on the field longer."

Gilbert is 6 feet 6 and 330 pounds, but he is noticeably leaner. His personal trainer suggested a meal plan to help improve his conditioning level.

He has cut red meat out of his diet and has limited his starch intake. His protein comes from chicken and fish, and he now consumes large amounts of fruits and vegetables, which are low in calories but satisfy his appetite.

"I really conditioned myself pretty hard this offseason," Gilbert said. "That was my key focus, being in high condition. I've always had a trainer, but I never followed a meal plan at all. This year, my trainer said let's try it and see how it works out. At first, I struggled with it because a lot of the foods I didn't like. But as I started to see my body change and how my body felt, I felt so fine and I just stuck with the plan."

Gilbert had many reasons to get into top shape. He is entering the final year of his contract and can become a free agent after this season. The top right tackles in the 2014 free-agent market earned contracts between $4 million and $6 million per season.

That's if Gilbert does not sign a long-term contract with the Steelers before the season begins. According to sources, the Steelers and Gilbert's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, have been in discussions about a long-term contract.

Friday, the Steelers signed place-kicker Shaun Suisham to a contract extension that prevents him from hitting free agency after this season. There was no news to report on negotiations with Cortez Allen and Jason Worilds, who also are entering the final years of their contracts.

The Steelers might be motivated to get a deal done with Gilbert because their depth at tackle is lacking. Mike Adams, the team's second-round pick in 2012, is following up his poor 2013 season with an equally dismal start to training camp.

Also, rookie fifth-round pick Wesley Johnson, the only offensive lineman selected in the draft, has not played well enough to ensure a spot on the 53-man roster unless he shows big improvement.

That leaves Guy Whimper as the top backup tackle, and he's not someone the team views as a long-term starter.

Gilbert has started 24 games in his first three seasons, including all 16 last year. He was the only Steelers lineman to start all 16 games. According to Pro Football Focus, Gilbert was 50th among 76 tackles in the NFL last season. He gave up 11 sacks and allowed 30 quarterback hurries.

The Steelers took steps to improve the offensive line play when they fired Jack Bicknell and hired Mike Munchak, a Hall of Fame player and long-time NFL offensive line coach.

Gilbert has enjoyed working with Munchak and is motivated to reach the high expectations that were set for him. He's not the only one. There is a collective mindset among the group that it's time to fulfill the expectations.

The Steelers have used a lot of high-round draft choices on offensive linemen in recent years, and they would like to see that group develop into a consistent unit. DeCastro was a first-round pick in 2012 and Maurkice Pouncey, who missed last season with a knee injury, was a first-round pick in 2010.

"We've had injuries, and guys were shuffling around me," Gilbert said. "I feel like the continuity is starting to build up and the consistency is growing.

"I'm just excited to grow with the guys because everyone has one goal, to be the line we can be."

http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/stee ... z39G0KDRdZ

Gilbert working hard for that extension? I think he gets it. The bit about Wesley Johnson is too soon to tell IMO. Adams I bolded because his days are getting shorter and shorter IMO. Perhaps he starts clicking here the next few weeks. If he does its SBI.

easy answer is 'it depends', with the dependence relating to (a) who else proves they deserve a lot of snaps between now and September and (b) who gets hurt.

but assuming 'they are who I think they are', and they is healthy, i'm probably endorsing base big nickel (2 cb 3s) with heyward, Timmons, shazier, and worilds on the field every snap in the front and tuitt, mclendon, Thomas, jones, and maybe McCullers waving in depending on down and distance. yinz, make plays = get more snaps.

might actually be having shamarko come off in passing situations (gay in), at least until I see him make some plays in coverage.

The offense and defense battled to a draw in one of the most anticipated drills of training camp. The offense scored three touchdowns in six attempts from the 1-yard line in the goal-line drill. Ben Roethlisberger threw an easy touchdown pass to tight end Matt Spaeth off play-action to start the drill. The play call didn’t sit well with the defense and might have contributed to cornerback Ike Taylor and LeGarrette Blount later jawing at each other from across the field. Tauren Poole and Josh Harris each scored on 1-yard runs, but the defense held its own, stopping three runs other short of the end zone. Inside linebacker Vince Williams blew up Poole short of the end zone, putting an exclamation on an impressive day. Williams had delivered a monster hit earlier in practice when he obliterated running back Miguel Maysonet in an 11-on-11 drill.
Rookie wide receiver Martavis Bryant had his best practice of training camp. The fourth-round draft pick made a handful of difficult catches. None were more impressive than when Bryant twisted his body while on the run to catch a Bruce Gradkowski pass that had sailed behind the 6-foot-4, 210-pound Bryant in the end zone. “He’s a big, so we expect him to consistently make big-guy plays,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said of Bryant. "I’m interested in him developing a complete game.”
Tempers flared again a day after the first fight of training camp broke out and nearly turned into a brawl. Outside linebacker Chris Carter and left tackle Kelvin Beachum had to be separated at the end of one play during a red-zone drill. Pro Bowl center Maurkice Pouncey and nose tackle Hebron Fangupo went at it during goal-line drills and punches were thrown before the two were separated.
Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey missed his second consecutive practice after sustaining a concussion last Thursday and linebacker Jordan Zumwalt remains out with groin tightness. Tomlin gave tight end Heath Miller and nose tackle Steve McLendon the day off in part so he could look at some of the younger players at those positions. Safety Mike Mitchell did some work, Tomlin said, and he might be close to returning. Mitchell, who signed a five-year, $25 million contract with the Steelers in March, has been on the physically unable to perform list since reporting to camp with a groin injury.
Rookie running back Dri Archer showcased his speed in one-on-one passing drills. Matched up several times against Lawrence Timmons, Archer made an over-the-shoulder catch after separating from Timmons on a wheel route. Earlier in the drill, Archer caught a pass in front of Timmons, stopped and then ran right past him.
The Steelers practice Sunday and Monday from 2:55 to 5:30 p.m. ET. The players are off on Tuesday and practice will resume on Wednesday. http://espn.go.com/blog/pittsburgh-stee ... news%22%7D
