Lit needs to bring back his Stephen Colbert avatar.
I would just like to take a moment and vouch that Lit does have a sense of humor. Why I've seen him crack a joke and everything!

eat a peach. In fact, eat all the peaches you want. But always remember, a I, V, IV progression is a retrogression. Geniuses sometimes use it for irony, or to add a bit of the “common touch” to a folky composition. But they don’t build their composing career around it.
Should I have said Dylan was a pop music genius?
There are literature professors who teach classes on Dylan and his use of language. There’s one who does it in my building!
I just think it’s silly to give the guy a noble prize for lit.. And if Dylan got one, it’s a crime Leonard Cohen didn’t. I don’t recall submitting in my post a thesis for ranking men and women of letters. I do recall expressing an opinion you don’t like.
I do drink English breakfast tea.
I did just get back from a beach.
Not offended about the academic attribution, just not clear why the disagreement is necessarily “academic.”
Mostly I wear jeans and t shirts. A faveorite has a dagger protruding ominously from the basin of a toilet bowl, but my wife doesn’t like me wearing it because it raises many points of interest for our five year old.
You sure I’m more pompous than you? I’m wondering! I even managed not to ascribe all sorts of assumptions about your personality and dress in my disagreement with you.
Oh, without reading Spanish, I too dig the Latin American magical realists, especially Borges.
Oy vey... This must be what being in a gay bar feels like.

The discussions are absolutely fantastic. Branching off from the OP to now a discussion concerning academic and musical influence. Thanks folks. Love this site.

Swiss, I feel like you're overemphasizing Conner's fumbles. He rushed for 973 yards and 12 TD's. He received for 497 yards and 1 TD. But sure, let's put all our focus on his two fumbles. You say he's responsible for losing two games. With those stats, how many games would you say he's responsible for winning?
And it really comes across to me as unseemly and disrespectful to the mods for you to keep saying "go ahead and ban me. I've been thrown out of better joints than this." If you care so little about the place, why do you post here?
I just figured it out.

I’m not familiar with Simpson. I grew up HATING country music as young little metal head. My mom listened (religiously) to Waylon, Willie, and Hank Jr. I thought it was garbage. Hated it. “I’ll never like this shit I protested”.
As I’ve gotten older I’ve come to realize that that trio not only made some of the best country music ever but some of the best music ever.
Love me some Waylon big time. Actually going to see Hank Jr. in a few weeks.
I’m a mut. My grandfather on my dad’s side is Irish, German, and quite a bit of American Indian. He’s told me but I do t recall which tribe. Much more Indian than a liar like Liz Warren claimed to be.
My mom’s dad side is 100% Sicilian Italian. Very old school Italy.
My mon’s mom is pure Kentucky hick. Never really knew that was in my blood till I heard a Loretta Lynn interview and realized she sounds just like grandma. Loretta was from Kentucky and turns out so was grandma.
The wife has caught me in the garage playing some Hank or Waylon and been like, ummmm, who are you....???
I’m having a bad day and currently 5 whiskeys deep.
My pop (grandfather on dad’s side referenced above) took his own life last night. I’ve been pacing the house not sure what to do with self all day. Mad & sad at same time.
Life happens. Appreciate those close to you...
Wow 95...my condolences.
Not really anything else to say. Stay strong.

My condolences 95. I’m sorry you have to go through something like that. My grandfather (Dads dad) also took his own life way before I was a glimmer in my Dad’s eye. My Dad was 13 and had to cut the rope he hung himself with. Never a good situation to know that a loved one was so troubled that they took their own life. Much of the time, no ones knows of their pain until too late. My thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family.

Here's the good news for you, Steel. You're right! I'm a lifelong Penn State fan. Always said so on this site. I come from a Penn State family. I didn't go to Penn State, but my two oldest brothers, my niece, nephew and niece's husband are all Penn State grads.
Now here's the bad news, for you. My commentary on James Conner has ZERO to do with his being a Pitt guy. I actually root for Pitt, too, other than when they play Penn State.
Other bad news for you...you've got serious emotional problems, Man. I think we all know that.

I am very sorry for your loss, 955876. I lost my uncle (and professional mentor) in the same way a few years ago. It’s tough. I totally get the mad/sad thing. I felt that way for a long time. Give yourself the time you need. It takes a while, and only time will do it. I have never “gotten over” it. But we learn to move on. You and your family are in my prayers.
Yes, Still Lit. I am probably at least as pompous as you are. Those who can do. Those who can’t teach. And those who might can but don’t feel like it become snarky, pompous old guys. Sorry to offend.
Sorry for your loss, 95- that is awful.

I bet you're a shittier dresser, though.
It's all good, baby.
I've always hated that stupid meme. Because it's totally unfounded. I had profs in college that were talented and professionals in their own right, yet decided to impart their knowledge and experience. Professionals sometimes teach at colleges. I've even been involved in teaching to some degree while working in the very same profession.Quixotic wrote:Those who can do. Those who can’t teach.
It's bullshit, just like a number of other bullshit expressions. It's meant to demean and insult. That's it.
Arguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon. No matter how good you are, the pigeon is going to shit on the board and strut around like it won anyway.

Is “demean” and “insult” redundant in this context? See. Socratic method. There’s a real life example for you of someone who can…TEACHING. Proves you are absolutely correct, COR-TEN.

Socratic method? Sweet. I’d love to hear your account, specifically about whether Socratic elenchus refutes or merely demonstrates inconsistency of opinion. I’m especially interested whether you think elenchus as portrayed in the early dialogues avoids the fallacy of the undetermined middle. It’s one of those non-doers’ quibbles.
