Re: 3rd & 1 to Heath
HopeTomlin is asked that question tomorrow and that he responds honestly. I'm not so sure we go for it on 4th. We don't make it and Atlanta isnt' far from Hail Mary territory. Of course, had 3rd down been incomplete (with the scenario you just posted), there still would have been almost 2 minutes left, so maybe in that case, Tomlin takes the risk and tries to pick up the yard, win the game.
I was still thinking, again, all else aside, that if we know it's 4-down, we run on 3rd, make SURE we milk the clock, then throw possibly on 4th with no clock implicaiton. Of course, the run/pass option blows a hole inall that.

If he's asked that question tomorrow, I hope he responds by telling whoever asked it to quit wasting everybody's time asking parallel universe what if questions about a play that worked on Sunday in a press conference about the upcoming game.

I agree Swiss, that's the way to do it. I have a hard time believing that had the 3rd down play failed, they're not punting in an attempt at giving Falcons a long field.

For perhaps the first time ever, Pierogi, I'll agree with you. We're not entitled to the answer, lest it come up again in game. He doesn't need to reveal his thinking. Like to know though.

Tomlin's reaction to that play was a talking point on talk radio here in South Florida this afternoon (think it was the LeBatard show). They led into the segment talking he maybe should be disciplined for it, probably to keep us tuned in until after the commercial break. Then they started talking about how he was taunting the fans, how his gestures were like "that was MY call!!", and how unusual it was for a coach to act like that. They weren't really trashing him, but the lead-in to the segment was characterized as more scandalous than the actual commentary. Was kind of weird. I didn't see it so it was news to me.

That's it!!
Tomlin knows he's been referred to as....The Potted Fuckin' Plant Mike Tomlin...on this esteemed website and wants there to be zero doubt that he's the guy making the call.

I was thinking the exact same thing!

BTW, to those that say Tomoin takes more risks than Cowher?
I say you do not understand that Mike Tomlin actully is displaying the behaviors of a coach every bit as risk averse as Cowher.
Taking risks late in games as opposed to early in games is a sign of a risk averse person.
Additionally, the play was as risk averse as you can get, even though it looked "aggressive"...even more so after hearing Ben and the coaches explain it.

So should we hate Tomlin more or less than before in light of this new information? I vote more.

As soon as I saw them cut to that, I knew it was going to come up somewhere for talking heads to #DEBATE over and offer #HOTTAKES about.

I don't hate Mike Tomlin, nor will I overly praise him with praise I don't feel he deserves.
I think the play call was good in that they could have run or passed from it...play seemed to have a ton of options built in...and the way the Falcons were selling out to stop the run, a pass was probably as safe an option on that call as you can ask for.
I just don't think Mike Tomlin is any more "gutsy" than the typical NFL coach.
I prefer smart aggressive over "guts" anyway.

I like you, Jeemie. You're one of the more even-keeled and reasonable posters here.

Announcers thought the pass in that spot indicated they would have gone for it on 4th. I don't think so. Had they intended to go for it on 4th, one would think they would first run on 3rd down, if unsuccessful, at least the clock has been reduced to 1:20. Going for it on 4th & 1, at the Alanta 40, full 2 minutes left, would have been damn risky.
Ballsy fuckin' call though.....gotta concede that to Tomlin/Haley, and Ben to the extend he called that.
Wish they would have ran that play at 3rd and fucking 7 against Jax in the '07 playoffs.

I doubt Jacksonville was crowding the line of scrimmage and selling out to stop a handoff to the RB in that particular scenario. And I believe it was 3rd-and-6.
Third and 6. The QB sweep around Trai Essex, the third string left tackle. My god, that was one of the dumbest/weakest play calls in Steelers history. A win in that game would have capped (at least to that point) the greatest 4th quarter comeback in NFL playoff history. You fight from 18 down to take the lead on the arm and playmaking abilities of Ben and then you call that? I mean, I guess that could've been Tomlin's call in that situation rather than Arians', or a combination of both. Just terrible.

That was before the Jaguars had their new, more menacing Jaguar logo and spiffy two-tone helmets, too. If that scenario played out today, I fully expect they'd intentionally take a safety regardless of field position.

That's what I had stated earlier about how I thought it looked like he made the call by the way he acted. That's so awesome that he can have so many Steeler fans cheering them on the road.
Howard Griffith had to resort to chop-blocking him during the 1997 AFC Championship Game. An incredulous Kirkland asked Griffith, “Why do you have to use cheap tactics like chop-blocking?” Griffith replied “Why do you have to be a 300-pound linebacker?”

If Mike Tomlin wasn't such a potted plant he would have forced Ben to run whatever play he felt like calling. Letting Ben decide what to do there proves he's a total players' coach. You think Bill Belichick lets Tom Brady call the shots? Heck no. When Brady's not on the field he's chained to BB's desk in nothing but Uggs with a ball gag in his mouth.
