Don't know it is a fact, I've seen no confirmation, but on ESPN near 4 PM they announced the Pirates had acquired Ben Zobrist from Tampa?

At about 5:45 PM ESPN News offered an apology for erroneously reporting that such a trade had occurred.

Well wow, that was exciting At least we can boast that our team was in on talks for big time players!


Lester and Price aren't in the Central,which is great, and the Pirates didn't give up their entire farm system for rentals. For the holes in the Pirates lineup, the bullpen is whats truly killing this team, and i'm stunned they didn't acquire anyone. We must now cross our fingers that our own guys get their heads out of their asses (Pedro, Marte) and start hitting the fucking ball and quite hitting beer vendors behind the 1st base line (Pedro)

I suppose they are planning on making moves at the waiver deadline again this year. Hopefully they are still in the race by then.

I'm not sure what I was expecting, I can tell you it wasn't much. Maybe AJ Burnett coming back for a prospect that I'd have preferred to not give up on yet and Jose Tabata. That being said, I got into the deadline hype like many of you on here and the millions around baseball nation today. Right now, flying somewhere between Baltimore and Chicago, I can tell you, I'm thoroughly dejected. It feels like the playoff loss all over again - actually even worse. It is impossible not to respect the work NH and his management team have done over the past few years, however, today feels like a defining moment. We've been promised the future for years and today I legitimately felt like I was living in it.

To take a shot on Lester, Price, Lackey, Hammel, Cosart and miss would certainly suck, but at least I'd have been able to hang my hat on the fact we took a shot. Josh Bell, Alan Hanson, Nick Kingham may all turn out to be all-stars, and if you told me right now I could have had David Price for all of them, I'd have given them you in a heartbeat, because I'm tired of waiting for next year and the promise of prospects.

We have glaring fucking holes on the corners, on the bench, and in the bullpen. "no moves as the best moves"....I'm having trouble stomaching that and the 50$ they'll ask for tickets in a few weeks when I get to the park.

1. As a capitalist, I truly admire Bob Nutting. He is a master salesman. He has con-vinced people that it is a good idea for him to save his money to "invest in the future." Problem is, tomorrow never gets here. Tomorrow is a fluid concept with Bob Nutting. Tomorrow never becomes today -- it always is and always will be tomorrow. I've asked before, and I ask again -- IF these prospects we have ever do amount to something significant, what will happen when it's time to pay them to "invest in the future?" I think we know, don't we?

2. As a life long Pirate fan, I detest what Bob Nutting is doing to the organization. Billionaire Bob could spend another $20 million a season on payroll and he'd still only be "investing" 2% in the present. Actually, most billionaires would gladly do this to pursue winning because they've made their $ in other ventures and their team is their passion. Sadly, billionaire Bob has evidently figured out how to take your/his money with him into the next world.

3. Your $50 isn't going to change billionaire Bob. I understand that. I also respect your right to spend your hard-earned after-tax entertainment dollar as you like. May I respectfully suggest, sir, that you give your money to a charity of your choice. At least there is a chance the money might do some good for someone who really needs it, and you won't have to stomach enabling Nutting's ongoing moral hazard.

yep..agree.. I thought they would get somebody to help..somewhere.. there are definite needs.. even just role players.. mike Martinez? zoral? who ever that bum is.. fucking frieri? these dogs on roster mean bucs need some decent bench players.. honestly im in awe that they are winning games at all with the holes they have and the very winnable games they shit away.. I agree the bull pen is the weakest area of this team. bunch of pansies..starters pitching over their heads!!

All the top pitchers commanded Major Leaguers back in return...I hate to echo Neal, but the Pirates couldn't match that.

Am really pissed they didn't get another bat or bullpen help, though.

I understand your point, and maybe NH did everything he could do, and maybe the best deal he made was no deal.

Problems are:
1. No pre-August 1 deals were made last year.
2. No significant off season signings occurred prior to this season (after 94 wins and coming within 1 win of the final 4 last year).
3. No pre-August 1 deals were made this year.

The Cardinals are always ALL IN. They got two (not one) starters to boost their staff.
The Brewers got an everyday player for the final two months.
The Pirates got a guy off waivers.

The Pirates were under serious suspicion before today. They are under serious indictment after today. Close but no cigar works for horse shoes and hand grenades. Not so much for going all in if going all in is really your goal.

Growing up in Red Sox territory they were the only team on television on a consistent basis. So they won my support during the critical years when I began playing tee ball. They caught lightening in a bottle last year and have really disappointed this season. With that said I think they made the right moves yesterday. I'm a huge Lester fan and glad he gets to compete for another ring this season. Something he wouldn't have had in Boston. While he says he's open to resigning in the offseason I seriously doubt that it's happening. On the bright side we get Cespedes who should be good for 30+ HRs with the Green Monster. We ended up getting Eduardo Rodriguez from the Os for Andrew Miller which seems like a steal. I also like what we got in return for Lackey.

With the pitching talent we have in the farm I think we'll be fine there. Just need to develop the bats or get something in free agency.
