Yeah, those bootlegs from the Isolar tour on YouTube are amazing.
Another unreal tour from back in the day was Joni Mitchell's Shadow and Light 1980 with Metheny/Mays, Michael Brecker and Jaco. Possibly the most talented group on one stage in rock history.
If the Steelers were Joni Mitchell, 2022 would be Dog Eat Dog.
You forgot Don Alias. Joni could assemble talent.
Saw Pat with Herbie, Jack and Dave Holland at the Mellon Jazz Fest years ago. I haven't felt moved by music as much as that show. No lyrics, just those four getting into some heady places. I can remember Herbie's smile when it was really happening.
Fuuuuuuuuugh
Dave Holland is on my bucket list. And I fear he’s going to slow down pretty soon.
The Live at Birdland Extended Play lp with his quintet is in my top 5 jazz albums all time. Billy Kilson fucking MURDERS the drums on the Jugglers Parade. Every time I listen to it I drop to the floor and convulse with seizures.
Hey ECM. It’s almost 2023. Put that shit out on vinyl already. WTF.
Billy is a great player, been awhile since I listened to him.
I don't think this is the Pgh Mellon Jazz fest show, but same year.
I caught Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets the other night, highly recommended, immersive sound. I think he was the brains behind Pink Floyd in a way. He name-checked a PF tribute I used to be in, shocked the hell out of me.
"I'm institutionalized, man," he joked. "I gotta have it. I just love the challenges week in and week out that this job provides: the growth in it, the collective growth, the individual growth."
I know it's a bit off topic (Bowie, Floyd, Jazz), but I've always enjoyed "Ocean" by John Butler -- the '12 studio version. It's a great way to spend 12 minutes and helps ground me when I feel I need it.
I'm far from a guitar expert, but I like how he uses his 12 stringed (only 11 actually) semi-acoustic guitar. His finger picking and various other techniques are impressive, imo.
If the Steelers were Dream Theater drummers, 2022 would be Mike Mangini.
Just sayin
That was Mike Portnoy on the drums in the video. I'm guessing you knew that.
You guessed correctly.
"I'm institutionalized, man," he joked. "I gotta have it. I just love the challenges week in and week out that this job provides: the growth in it, the collective growth, the individual growth."
