For Who?@FieldYates
Source: the Steelers converted $8.085M of DE Cam Heyward's $9M base salary into a signing bonus, creating $5.39M in 2018 cap space. Some cap wiggle room. https://twitter.com/FieldYates/status/1 ... d-nfl-news

Probably just a little cushion in case someone gets hurt mid-year and they need to sign someone. It doesn't matter anymore - if they don't use that money it automatically carries over to next year.

Going into the season with only 3 OLB's isn't curious to anyone? I'm thinking they're looking at bringing in someone. I know there's 53 currently w/o Bell. That doesn't mean anything. Both Dangerfield and M. Allen could easily be released and make the practice squad for Bell and a vet OLB.

none of those fill a need we already have our WR as well as S, now OLB has a big hole
Swiss needs to be here to state the line....what is it again, Tomlin's "____ line of bullshit".
Fuck I forgot.

An Exceedingly Well-Developed Line of Bullshit
Since Bell isn't reporting for week 1, that's almost another mil in cap space correct?
Howard Griffith had to resort to chop-blocking him during the 1997 AFC Championship Game. An incredulous Kirkland asked Griffith, “Why do you have to use cheap tactics like chop-blocking?” Griffith replied “Why do you have to be a 300-pound linebacker?”
“Do you feel more comfortable with what you have behind Le’Veon going into Cleveland than you did last year?”
“Yes,” said Tomlin.
“Why is that?”
“James,” said Tomlin.
Conner

My thoughts...
This offense as it stands today is at a significantly different place than on Aug 31, 2017.
JuJu had yet to take a rs NFL snap a year ago.
We could not have realistically hoped for anything more from Conner than what he showed this preseason IMO. Probably will never be Bell in pass pro but looks a little quicker eating up yds in the open field than Bell at this point in his career. Caught the football. I'm not counting any rs chickens yet though with Conner until he does it vs rs defenses.
Samuels is being developed.
Washington is probably going to be a good player for us.

I am reading that the Steelers technically have a two week roster exemption at $855,555 a week??

I love when they asked Tomlin about Bell's possible arrival and he said that "he hadn't thought of it"

Yes, every week he misses the team cuts $855,555 off the payroll for the season. If he takes the sit out multiple games route the team will have basically wasted the franchise tag money they could have used to sign probably 2 or 3 good players at other positions is the real problem. They did the finances with 14.5 million accounted for but if Bell sits for anything more than 1 or 2 weeks they will have lost an entire year of salary from another guy that could have been starting all season possibly. If you take 5 weeks of his pay that is over 4.2 million dollars. That is a starting inside LB or a good backup OLB & OG.

He's not focused on it. That's Tomlin.
I think the staff is pretty comfortable with the running back stable currently on the team... as much as they can be at least without rs tested

Does that for sure come off the cap, or is it just money the team won't pay out. In my mind, it all counts against the cap and then the team fines him a paycheck for each week he's not there. Fines don't credit to your cap.

Yes, it does. His $14.544M is money on this years books. Divided in 17 pay periods equaling $855K each. The only way it becomes a debit to this years cap is if he signs it first, with each week he doesn't passing, it counts $855K less.
The two week exemption - if awarded by the league - will reduce the $14.5M cap hit by $1.7M if the PS decide to use it. If they do, he will not be active during that period either and Conner will be the man.

Well I think this is where Tomlin shines. You know that thought has crossed Tomlin's mind, but he's not going to give Bell any love. Basically told him to get on board with the rest of the crew

"Coach Tomlin, I think — this is just me on the outside looking in — he wants me paid," Bell said. "He's told me a couple times, 'Look: I’ll hand you a blank check, you can write what you want on it if it was up to me.'"

Makes the weekly game plan that much easier when you can pencil in all those touches to one RB...
The Steelers are among the NFL’s worst teams in total offense (30th) and total defense (28th). Highest paid defense in the league by far. We are lucky to have Mike Tomlin.

It is not a fine. His entire salary is base salary so every week he does not report is pure savings.

Tomlin needs to pull his head out of his butt. You can't talk to deluded prima donnas like that. Tomlin was saying that he is about getting a team on the field and could care less about the money. But Bell hears, "You deserve every penny that you want"

How about "will plan accordingly"
How long would a press conference actually last if Tomlin removed all of the unnecessary, circular and meaningless words.
