1st Rd rewind - assuming no trade possible, who do you pick?

Post by Legacy User » Fri Apr 27, 2018 7:01 pm

There has been a lot of talk about how the Steelers should have traded down at 28 last night. But I think the assumption that there are always takers is wrong. Especially last night at 28 with so many trades already, and the Ravens knowing the Steelers (and the other teams left in Round 1) weren't going to take Lamar Jackson. I get the nervousness that the pick came quickly, that Shazier was there and the significance of that symbolically...therefore the quickness meant it was a rushed pick without other options explored. But assuming there were no trade takers, who would you have selected?

Probably....

Harold Landry, Edge, Boston College | 6’2, 252 | Athleticism: 87th percentile | Age: 22

He would be BPA at that spot. imo.

If he works out as a situational pass rusher you could always line him up in Watts side and push Watt inside to play in the middle during some passing downs, something he did well last year when asked to.

It also gives you much needed OLB depth and some negotiating power when dealing with Bud and his future as a Steeler.

Given Steelers were willing to toss out the draft "chalk" book on where to draft player X? Shaq Griffin.

I am of the opinion there was no market for the trade. I would have been comfortable with going as far down as Oaklands 9th but none of those teams needed anything at 28th in the first round to make a play for the pick as evident by the lack of action until the last pick. And chances are good that TB and OAK all have needs at safety so trading down there would have been dicey.

I'd have taken a punter for no other reason than to troll the internet GMs.

Edmunds. I already had the most successful NFL franchise vet him. The assumption being I had the same draft number.

That's a pretty good draft.
