Ya know..... it would have been nice if he started with something as simple as "Above all else, we don't add anyone to the team unless we think they have the skill & talent to contribute." Maybe he thinks that goes without saying but I sill would have liked to hear it.
I really don't have an issue with the rest of the "Tomlin Spiel" - it is what it is and he is what he is. The players seem to love the Tomlinisms and most of them play hard for him (though we'd all still like him to be better on Xs & Os, Time Management and use challenges)

Connor Heyward can play some football
Derek Watt……very limited player…..many others I’d rather have

I struggle to see the value, while at the same time acknowledging it's kind of splitting hairs talking the bottom of the roster. Though Derek Watt was paid way too much.
This strikes me as just another Tomlin "gut" feeling that signing guys' brothers makes it a happier family and easier to re-sign those guys.
Otherwise, I really doubt Tomlin thinks about the bottom of the roster that much (remember he once didn't know if a guy dressed or not). Other teams would find a way to carry a few specialists or gadget types. Not that Tomlin would know how to use those guys if he did.

You have to hand it to him. He can talk. I bet he could make a ton of money as a speaker at corporate events. Of course he's already making a ton of money but you know what I mean.Stillerz Bar wrote: ↑Fri May 05, 2023 12:39 amYa know..... it would have been nice if he started with something as simple as "Above all else, we don't add anyone to the team unless we think they have the skill & talent to contribute." Howard Griffith had to resort to chop-blocking him during the 1997 AFC Championship Game. An incredulous Kirkland asked Griffith, “Why do you have to use cheap tactics like chop-blocking?” Griffith replied “Why do you have to be a 300-pound linebacker?”
It'll probably get hated on, but f it... as of 5/4/23 (reserving the right to change my mind like a bitch).......
I absolutely love this shit. I l love how it's something unique to Pittsburgh, and I love the family-like relationship and culture building behind it. The fact that we've had 3 coaches in over 50 years and have these family relationships we promote on the team, how we've brought back in Merril Hoge and Ike Taylor and they're in our war room, seeing Joey Porter and his family getting emotional when JPJ got drafted... I get it, there is a line, but I love it.
And so far? I outlined it in another post, these brothers we've brought in with any significant expectations have overall been a net + in the big scheme of things. I don't know, I just lack any reason at the moment to be upset about this stuff. We thought Connor Heyward was a reach last year at the end of the sixth, and he's already well on his way to outperform his draft position (and already has by even being a contributor). JPJ was a first round talent, should I feel bad we took him at 32? Herbig basically was a consensus mid round pick and we took him at the bottom of the fourth. Maybe he hits, maybe he doesn't. The odds of finding a starting LB in the 4th round are around 16%. A little better than 1 in 10. Let's see how it goes.

This is a very average football team.

Also if we make the playoffs, does the lack of coaching/philosophy changes get us blow out in the first round like usual? If our defense plays well all year and gives up 30+ while we're running an ultra conservative offense, we'll know nothing has changed or improved.Smashmouth21 wrote: ↑Fri May 05, 2023 2:32 amThis team is vastly improved from last year. KP8 will determine just how far it goes. Arrow is pointing up.

Not until they get on the field and prove otherwise. This team is vastly improved from last year.
I think the idea is to shit all over the team, then tell us how horrible the team is being run, so when they have success, you can be surprised and feel superior. Because you called the bullshit, right?Smashmouth21 wrote: ↑Fri May 05, 2023 2:32 amThis team is vastly improved from last year. KP8 will determine just how far it goes. Arrow is pointing up.
It's makes people feel good to be right. Regardless if they are or not. Some posters can't bring themselves to say anything positive because it's breaks the dynamic of being negative, in order to make themselves feel smart.

Derek Watt being on the team didn’t bother me. Making Derek Watt the 2nd highest paid FB in the league did to some degree.
Wasn’t a fan of having a scrub like Edmunds brother at RB. But he was cheap depth and now gone so whatever.
I have zero issues with drafting JPJ. Especially since we nabbed him in round two.
We needed a corner badly and got one. Bonus we were able to do so after first grabbing an OT.
We play in a division with one of the best QBs in the league who has a big time receiver to throw to.
We needed to add a big corner and got one of the highest rated in the draft.
No issue that he’s Porter’s son and in this case think it’s actually a bit of a good thing.
I think this team had a strong off-season and improved themselves (at least on paper thus far) quite a bit.
Barring major injuries, I fully expect this team to make the playoffs this year. The talent has been upgraded.
I’m looking forward to seeing what they do.
Next year they will add another big-time WR in first few rounds I’m guessing to complete the offensive rebuild.
The only ??? Is will Canada be able to elevate the offense and will Jibbs allow him to.

Tomlin to the Chiefs?
Yes he’s very good at having nothing at all to say and yet making the nothing up into words.RemoAZ wrote: ↑Fri May 05, 2023 1:37 amYou have to hand it to him. He can talk. Perfect for corporate speaking!

Yup. Talk a lot and say absolutely nothing. But what is confusing to me is that people complain. This is what life in america is all about, not just corporations. As they say, "Money Talks, Bullshit Walks." Just look at the advert business, raking in more money than some country's GDP, selling you shit you don't need. Everything in this country is about lying and yet people whine and complain and try to teach their children "honesty."jeemie wrote: ↑Sat May 06, 2023 2:29 pmYes he’s very good at having nothing at all to say and yet making the nothing up into words.RemoAZ wrote: ↑Fri May 05, 2023 1:37 amYou have to hand it to him. It's the proverbial Lipstick On A Pig. Why is this a problem? What do you expect him to say? Be honest?!!

Second that, and no Bud Light please and thank you.

This from an interview with coach Martin,
Be interesting to watch Herbigs’ career progress as an OLB“Right now, he’s gonna start at outside linebacker, that’s what we have him at. 240 [pounds] is good, but we’ll get with G on that,” Martin said. “I like him right now at his 240 weight, to be honest with you. He’s definitely athletic enough to do that, but like I said, we’re gonna start him at that outside ‘backer and try to make a big-time player out of him there first. https://steelerswire.usatoday.com/2023/ ... l-draft-2/
