Third and goal: whole thing was a clusterfuck

Post by jeemie » Tue Oct 03, 2023 2:23 am

I know everyone got on Kenny for missing a wide open Heyward, but watching the play...everyone but Heyward fucked up.

1) This shot I think you can see why Kenny goes for Robinson...looks like he's free of his man and can go along the goal like and catch a Kenny TD, while Heyward takes the other man with him. But...Kenny would have had to throw the ball already, and he didn't because...

2) ...maybe he was expecting Robinson to do the brain dead stupid ass thing he did, which was stop and turn around. WTF? So now he's got both men coming to him and Heyward will be free, and I do think maybe Kenny sees that but...

3)...he would have to reset a bit to change his arm angle...but Broderick Jones has failed badly on his pass pro, so now Kenny is about to get decked.

So I think it was total systems failure there, starting with Robinson stopping and turning right with two defenders on him.

Unless of course Robinson was the decoy to spring Heyward free, and Kenny forgot?

Either way...piss poor.

I read somewhere that Pickett has the most combined hits, knockdowns and sacks among full time starters in the league. No surprise. The oline was really bad again. Jones was scary bad and Herbig wasn't much better. Both players beaten badly there.

Even on KP's INT it was NOT a clean pocket where he could step into it and rip it.

KP is not reading zone defenses very well and is too locked onto certain targets, but the Oline is atrocious right now.

If this is accurate, it would be even more damning, because they almost certainly have the fewest offensive snaps in the league.

Remember when we were trying figure out why the foster kid’s grade suddenly went in the tank?

He needs a tutor in algebra?
Maybe he needs glasses?
His seating is always near the back of the class?
He hasn’t been eating breakfast or snacks before lunch?
He has a crush on a girl?
Puberty?
Acne?

None of the above!

It was Jerry Sandusky banging him in the showers!

Matt Canada is Jerry Sandusky and he has been virtually wrestling and banging this whole offense since he got here!

Was there anyone near Harris on that last pic that you can see from the original? If not he was wide open.

So WTF? Pickett is locking in and staring down guys it seems. I don't get that. He didn't seem to do that last year at all. Is he being directed to throw to a specific read? Doesn't make any sense...

Agree that Robinson shouldn't have stopped his route, but that throw was waaayyyyy too late. Here's the look if you back it up a few frames.

^ The ball needs to be thrown NOW.

One other thing - why are we running the fade with our 6'0" H-back?

I agree...IF the play is to have Robinson keep going on his route.

But that didn't look to be the plan.

Frankly it looked like the DBs had it well covered and/or that's a bad route combo vs that defense.

Young QBs need to learn on the job and if they're running for their lives on most drop backs, it will be hard to learn how to read a zone.

FIrst off, three defenders to Najee's side, so unlikely he's scoring.

Secondly, this is smash concept. Short curl/stop paired with a corner route form the slot. About as basic a passing concept as there is, used vs cover 2. This is man coverage, which probably changes the read a little but it's still Pickett rushing (forget Jones' guy... Mason Cole has whiffed and his defender is about to park Kenny in the turf) to get rid of the ball, IMO.

Robinson has to stop so that the window to the back pylon for Heyward is open and the DB covering 11 doesn't drop back into that throw.

Yeah, ball to the pylon and that's a TD.

Kenny needs to sit. The injury is a good excuse, especially ahead of the bye. I hope they don't throw him out there on a bad wheel.

Was just thinking to myself, is Kenny looking at the receiver coming open in Pabst's last pic, or was he glancing at whether he could trust B. Jones to protect his backside ... ?

I want to say that if Pickett knows that Jones is going funnel the guy to the outside, then he could step up confidently based upon how everyone else has walled up on that play. But 61 has gone full turnstile. Mercy.

This play may have had something to do with why Kenny was in the shotgun on the 4th and short the next drive.

He’s been sacked 11 times. 8 of those times he left the pocket early per PFF.

An experienced QB released the pass in picture 1 and throws the receiver open. Pickett holds it too long. It’s not college, you can’t wait until somebody runs wide open.
