I realize that the Steelers historically have drafted some of the kids they bring in on these official visits but I just don't get the selection process as far as who they opt to fly in.

For example why bring in CJ Uzomah? He's a 7th rd UDFA type who they could easily get to know at his Pro Day. I like CJ I knew him when he was a highly successful high school qb here in Suwanee. Good character. Went to Auburn as a WR before making the move to TE. He's a decent athlete with zero college production. Why waste the visit?

Given the fact the Steelers often draft kids they take to dinner and kids they have in for a visit why not concentrate on the early round possibilities so they get the crucial picks right rather than waste time on a 7th rd flyer like Uzomah or Paulsen or Branchflower? Make these visits count at least with an unknown player with some upside and measurables if not on the early rd picks that cannot be squandered

Because their board is 100% set for the top 100 picks? Probably.

Jesus. They've totally lost their minds at UPMC HQ. From Rotoworld:
Auburn WR Sammie Coates has visited the Miami Dolphins and Cleveland Browns and will visit the San Francisco 49ers and Pittsburgh Steelers next week, according to the National Football Post.

Won't count as an official visit, but I can get behind this "private workout". A beachum-esque technician who was the best looking OL at the Senior Bowl:
Hobart OL Ali Marpet has nine visits and 15 private workouts scheduled before the draft, reports TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline.
"I've been told many of those workouts will take place on the weekend," Pauline wrote. In addition, Marpet attended the Syracuse pro-day and had a "private" workout observed by the New England Patriots, New York Jets, Detroit Lions, Washington Redskins, Pittsburgh Steelers, Tennessee Titans, Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers. It seems that Marpet, a Cinderella draft story, has worked his way into Day 2.

once again not Offical Visit but...
Florida OL Max Garcia has had private meetings with the Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles and Tampa Bay Bucs, according to TFY Draft Insider Tony Pauline.
The 6-foot-4, 307-pound Garcia was a second-team All-Southeastern Conference selection and a team captain for the Gators. The Florida prospect had a strong outing at the Senior Bowl, which put him on some evaluators' radars. The former Maryland transfer, has made starts at center(13), left tackle(17) and left guard (7) during his career, and was the only lineman for Florida to start every game the last two seasons.-- Walter Football
Rotoworld

I get that they have to be interested in every Florida OL that comes out... why not Humphries? He's the guy who could really help them.

See that's my point. Why not bring in DJ Humphries? He'd be right in the Steelers wheelhouse at pick 22 but given the fact he wasn't brought in the odds of him being a Steelers pick aren't that great. Oh sure it's possible that they don't want to draw to much attention to a prospect they like but Tomlin taking all these kids to TGI Fridays isn't exactly trying to keep things a secret.

I'd just like to see more premium talent brought in. Since Tomlin didn't wine and dine Marcus Peters or bring him to sunny South Side for a visit does that mean Ozzie will once again get his man come draft night since he did bring Peters in for crab cakes?

What better opportunity to get to know some of these kids with issues like Peters, PJ Williams, and Randy Gregory etc. it's nice to see Ali Marpet be invited but what about other small school kids like the kid from Towson? Tomlin dined with the injured Jalen Collins but why not bring in Byron Jones or the injured and small school Davis Tull? Where are the local visits at? Donovan Smith? TJ Clemmings? Shaq Riddick?

I know the draft board is set but I'd just like to see due diligence being done on these kids. I see a lot of prospects I like in various rds not being linked to the Steelers. Oh sure there's always the kid that says he had no idea the team that drafted him was even interested. Since the Steelers pretty much stick to drafting the kids they visit I'd like to see them bring in more upside than a CJ Uzomah. Again, nice kid, but he's a low upside 7th rd dart throw. Nothing to be gained bringing him in.

11 of the last 15 players they drafted came in for official visits. They seem to stack up a bunch of early round types then balance it out with some late round picks. I would guess they want to be sure on the top end guys so they don't blow a premium pick. The late rounders are like a recruiting visit. If they don't get picked they are free agents and you want that relationship with them so they pick you. Also, the Steelers have had more late round picks in recent years so it makes sense to do some homework on players that might fit where your picks are.

I'm also excited they are showing some interest in Peters. I'm fine with Valles. They have 3 picks in the late 6th or 7th round plus UDFA interests. You can't teach the natural athleticism he has. I'm way more concerned about all of the attention they are giving his teammate Eli Harold. That pick in the 1st or 2nd would be a kick in the dick.

I'm putting the odds of CB/OLB with the top 2 picks at 95%.

Yeah, Valles would be a nice late-round lottery ticket since he decided to leave school so early. Will he even be 20 yet at the start of training camp?

Peters also met formally with Mike Tomlin at the combine. Carnell Lake and Mark Bruener attended UW pro day, at which Peters was permitted.

Not to mention that Peters smashed it out of the park at his pro day.

Peters would be my favorite option in the first if he lasts until 22. Carter is my guy for R2 as well....don't know if he makes it to the Steelers pick though....

If they take Peters in Rd 1, I just don't see any edge players they would consider in Rd 2 that won't be a kick in the dick for me.

Delaire is the next guy I really believe in and I think most view him as a 4th rounder at best. Same with Tull. That 2nd/3rd round edge rusher pool is just death warmed over. CBs, S, RB, DL, WR all sweet in that range

Maybe we will see a double dip at CB in the first two rounds....the CB situation might be bad enough to justify it.

I agree, but the defense is not getting fixed in one draft in any case. And I don;t think any edge rusher that will be available at 22 is going to be able to come in and just play. They're all going to have to learn the system. So might as well take a R2 like Orchard and rotate him in and let him learn a bit. And I don't see an edge usher available at 22 as good at edge rushing as Peters is at corner backing. I teleport to the podium if he's there. Running would take to long.

I say all this without really knowing dick about football, though.

Defense won't get fixed in one draft, but the secondary could.

See, I have no problem with the Steelers flying in CJ Uzumah (for example). The staff recently got to see him at pro day where he had a very good day. now, they follow up with a meeting. nobody can tell me a team can "get to know" a player at pro day or the 15 minutes at the combine either. CJU is probably viewed as a priority UDFA. if so, the face time could really pay off. after being snubbed at the combine, what this guy wants is someone to give him recognition. the UDFA game is important and the kids pick you instead of the other way around.

lay off CJU. AU didn't call his number much, but when they did, the kid was money. CJU enjoys an OUTSTANDING reputation at AU. I believe he will make an NFL roster.

He is a 4-3 OLB, a la Shaq Thompson or Telvin Smith. His teammate Richardson is more interesting to me as a UDFA.

Maybe they're going to play him as a Kam Chancellor type in a 4-3?
