As long as he wasn't trying to throw games I couldn't give half a shit what he was betting on as it pertains to his HOF candidacy. The guy is a vain douche by many accounts, as are a great many HOF players in every sport.
IMO, I don't really have issue with betting on your team as a player (only with the spread, so as to avoid point shaving). Although if we were talking sports other than baseball, going balls out to cover the spread rather than coasting when you can might unnecessarily wear you down, too.
But as a manager, even giving the points can lead to some suboptimal decisions that might hurt the team (such as leaving a pitcher in longer because you're trying to cover the spread).
