Good, Interesting Day 1 Breakdown!

Thought there were a few tidbits imbedded in this breakdown. I thought, one of the most surprising things, was that Eli Rodgers was #1 in return drills over Archer:

Second 11 on 11

6. Steelers go empty set. A slant/corner combination with the #1 on a slant and the #2 – Archer split out – on the corner. Jones misses, the pass too far in front, and it’s incomplete.

I am not surprised by Eli Rogers at all. I have him as my dark horse to make the team at WR. He was a punt returner in college at Louisville. If you look at our roster there really is not one single player who can be trusted to cleanly do punt returns outside of Antonio Brown. But now with Rogers the Steelers have a player who can do punts. Wheaton had something like 2 career punt returns in college, Archer had none, only kick returns. Heyward-Bey, Coates and Bryant probably don't have the hands to consistently do the job without having too many muffs, turnovers.

So, Rogers can be that second option to do punt returns and also gives the team another quick twitch, smaller WR who has great hands and runs great routes. Who knows maybe the team is serious about reducing the load on Antonio Brown? So many catches and returns on that tiny frame might start to add up, maybe it is wise going forward to wean him off returns.

I hope Rogers can move Heyward-Bey off the roster.

That would be a beautiful thing.

Rogers would need to show he top flight ST guy to do that. But like seeing him on returns already.
