Kenny Chesney?
Kenny Chesney?
Why the hell do the Steelers send out emails pimping this guy's concert? Seems like every year they have a Kenny Chesney concert at Heinz Field. Other than Johnny Cash (who I love), I pretty much hate country music, and growing up I never had an impression that Pittsburgh was a country music town at all, it was always rock & roll, WDVE etc. So WTF is up with this Kenny Chesney infatuation?

There's always been a strong country music element in the Pittsburgh area to go along with the rock and roll...I remember it from growing up there.
What's funny is...I go back from time to time, and it's like i never left. I love my birth city, and I'm really not trying to sound like i'm denigrating it, but Pittsburgh really is stuck in a time warp.
Of course, the area I live in now is also stuck in a time warp...I must be attracted to places like that!

I guess the people I knew and hung out with where the non-country music types, I never knew anybody into country.

No thanks, I'll just post it here just because I feel like it.
Definitely. I haven't been back for at least five years, but I feel the same.Jeemie wrote:. . . but Pittsburgh really is stuck in a time warp.
Felt like that when I lived there. It was always five to ten years behind the rest of the country. Well, except Ohio and Indiana. And W VA. and. . .

I don't like country music at all. But Kenny Chesney has a massive following (lots of hot women too) everywhere. He sells out stadiums in DC all the time. And DC is a bastion of young, progressive liberals.
So lets not act like it's some weird time warp thing in Pittsburgh. I know many like to paint with a broad brush that Pittsburgh is full of backwood rednecks or something. BTW, there is an "unsubscribe" button if you're sick of getting emails.

They're not in a time warp because they like Kenny Chesney- I know he has broad appeal.
But they are in a time warp.
It's not meant to be a slap at Pittsburghers...it's just something that is.

Thank you. Great post.
As far as country music having a big following in Pittsburgh, I personally don't care for it, but it seems like it has a moderate following around here.
I am a Canadian, I visit P-Town a couple of times a year. I do love the city.
One thing that I come across there is latent racism. As a Canadian this is relatively "interesting" more than anything. I thought given the geographical location this would not be the case, it would start further south I.E. Virginia/Kentucky. This MAY have a connection to the affinity for country music. I am NOT saying if you like country music you are a racist, but as the Eagles receiver proved a couple of years ago there may be something of a connection.
Lastly I heard a new term for African American, that I assume is disparaging in P-Town, a "shine". Not trying to stir up any shit just observations from a visitor.

Pgh has a history of racism. No denying that.
And no. Pittsburgh is not a backward redneck town. It can be stuck in a time warp and be sluggish with change, but the 'burgh is still attractive to tech and corporate interest, and continues to have a vibrant artistic and culturally diverse community. Two concepts can mutually co-exist.

Pittsburgh is the capital of (Northern) Appalachia- of course it has a big country music fanbase.

Just my two cents, and I really hope this thread doesn't degenerate the way of several I've seen recently. Latent racism exists everywhere with all peoples. You'll find it in liberal Boston and New York as much as you'll find it in cities and areas where you would expect it. And I've seen it in many foreign lands during my travels in the Navy and in business, and yes I've seen it in Canada - Halifax, St. John's and Edmonton to name a few places. You'll also experience it and see it in people who enjoy many different genres of music, not just country. Unfortuntely, it's universal. And it's a fucking shame.

Bingo Jack, Boston is pretty well recognized as the most racist large city. I have not spent much time there so I wouldn't know. But it's gotten that rep. I grew up in tiny town with little to no diversity. Believe it or not, I never realized how racist some people could be until I went to college and had a roommate who grew up in a polish neighborhood in inner city Philly.
It was eye opening to realize this kid was 10 times more racist than anyone I knew back in my small town USA. Most of which drove pickup trucks and listened to country music.

Eastern Europe is really racist! All these "Black Lives Matter" people that are all over how American whites are super racist and just don't know, should go to spend some time in Greece, or Russia, or Georgia and that way be able to tell that the white people are racist, because they KNOW IT and don't even try to hide it.... Lol, I'm sure I must not be racist, since I'd definitely go to a Snoop Dogg concert before I'd spend money to see Kenny Chesney

Honestly Nick, I think Kenny Chesney hits about every major stadium from the Pacific Northwest to NYC and many in between. yep http://www.chesneyworld.com/tourdates/
BTW, my roommate in college wasn't actually Polish, but he was a white kid from one of the only white neighborhoods in Philly.
I would tend to agree with you on Eastern Europe, but it seemed to me more towards the dislike of Turks because I never really saw any black people. haha

Yes RS thank you for reminding me about Bostonians. I went to university in Montreal and we had lots of Bostonians there (late 70's). It was cheaper to go to school in another country as foreign exchange students (paying more than twice the domestic tuition rates) than to go to school in Boston. Some also came to play football, but I digress.
Like you and Philly dude, I was flabbergasted at the open racism of these cats. Dropped N bombs like nobody's business. I considered them friends we partied like fiends. There was a "chick", Reenie from Boston (short for Maureen), who challenged a dude to a drink off. So they both brought a case of 24 Canadian beers (5%), and sat there and drank and bullshitted, the dude got to 18 and tapped out. Reenie finished the whole fuckin case I shit you not. Took about 5 or 6 hours but she did it. I was in awe.

The thing I remember about them if you were black and played for the Celtics, you were ok, any others, not so much.
Good times

Hardly a new one, Stinger....been around forever, you've just not heard it.
In fact, right before looking at this post, I saw Rooney's OP on QB's Steelers are facing where he states that ...."the shine is coming off of Russell Wilson." I immediately thought of the racial slur.
To the extent that Pittsburgh may be a more racist city than others, I generally think this is bullshit, but several things I've read about the steel industry historically ascribe some legitimacy to this view due to blacks moving in to some of the jobs at the mills, displacing some of the hunkies (maybe you've not heard that one either, Stinger....haha) that were working there.

Nick, you just solved why Pittsburgh, Youngstown, Cleveland, and probably all of the rust belt has a lot of racism. Most that came over to work the Mills were Eastern European including both of my grandparents (Crotia and Ukraine). I would have to say they were a lot like Archie Bunker with an accent.

I see a lot of words typed in this thread but none address the original question, although I do appreciate seeing a dago call someone a hunky. The reason the Steelers pimp the Chesney concert is because we are dumb enough to use tax dollars to build a massive stadium for millionaires, then we allow them to host concerts in said venue and earn a profit off of it. The reason the Steelers promote this concert is because they make money off of it, probably a lot. As in most things in life, follow the money and find your answer.

Good seeing you back posting, Perch!
Yeah....I'm always loose with my ethnicities. Reminds me of when I was in grade school, and the teacher had us, in turn, identify our nationalities. When it came to Victor Pozek, he said, "Hunky."

Not unique to Pittsburgh, PILOT and TIF financing schemes, public & private financing is underlying in high profile and revitalization projects throughout America and beyond. Risky? Certainly but w/o it the thousands of revitalization projects everywhere in the US, repurposing decrepit areas with good infrastructure would not happen. Agree, follow the macro money but also track it's impact through the micro.

NASCAR also popular in Pgh... the ethos has really changed around here. I think people identify with country and NASCAR and sports because that's working class ethos in America now.
