Positives from Last Nights Game :)
Positives from Last Nights Game :)
Ok...will try to be more optimistic than my anger last night after the dumpster fire.
1. Steelers only fault Landry for 1 pic last night. I tend to agree when I look objectively at the film. It doesn't mean he was great. He still stares down reads and always favors his first read. The first INT was atrocious. The 2nd was DPI, the 3rd had a lot to do with Coates laziness, and the last he was hit in the arm as he threw (it happens).
2. Steelers first team D did not give up any points despite multiple turnovers. I thought the Dline looked strong as did ILB. I thought OLB was pretty good but I'd like to see even more pressure from them. Grant and Davis looked pretty good on D last night in the sense that they seemed to be "getting it".
3. Eli Rogers looks like a stud. He is very very quick and has great acceleration. I can't believe he was an UDFA.
4. Richardson is a nice pickup at RB. That situation looks a lot better this year because of him.
5. Jesse James was destroying people on run blocking in the first half. He also had a nice 1st down catch. I'd still like to see what he does in the seam with Ben throwing to him. His worst play of the night was getting beat on Landry's last INT, but I thought he was good despite that.
6. Last but not least...no real injuries.
I'll stop here because I don't even want to think about the 2nd half too much.

#1) Look at the film, he was at fault for pick 2,3 & 4 for sure.

This Coates laziness thing has to stop. He was running to near corner of EZ, away from coverage. Throw was to back corner, into a sea of coverage.
The 1st int was thrown well behind and outside he WR, who is running a curl, meaning his momentum is coming back towards the QB and middle-- exactly away from the throw. It's an amateurish, rookie udfa mistake.
I also have no idea how to evaluate Vaughn. They run for no gain at least once or twice per series and then unleash the pass rush hounds.
A positive I saw: Jacob Hagen is the 4th best safety they have and he made a couple of terrific STs plays last night- a backside tackle and a first team punt where he was the gunner and drew a block in back. I think he could really put a fight to shamarko.

I would take it one step further B2B, I don't know how we can evaluate any of our skill position players in the passing game without Ben out there. I mean it is ridiculous.
It was hilarious to listen to that Bob Pompiani talk of how foolish Philly is to spend so much money on Bradford and then Daniels and then draft Wentz in the first round.
Yeah, Bob so much better to pinch pennies and draft Ben's little sister's best friend's husband (fair or not that IS what Laundry Jones ultimately will be remembered for) and Vaughn and a local kid in Bruce Gradowski. Yeah, that is working out so much better.
I like Hagen too, but Shmarko is having a fine preseason. On that one punt to start the game?, Thomas was down there so fast he forced the return man to call a fair catch. To me we need to just go with Mitchell, Golden, Davis, and Thomas with Doran Grant as the unofficial 5th S/CB. We need to concentrate on finding CBs.
We need to go with 6 CBs and 4 Ss. Keeping a 5th safety makes no sense to me, would a 5th safety even be active on game day?

Well, Davis is now playing 1st team CB and third team FS. How do you count him? I hunk shamarko has been good on STs but hate true for boy he and Hagen. Hagen is a ballhawk FS type and Thomas an in the box downhill SS. Which is more valuable to have in reserve. At minimum, I keep Hagen on PS over Dangerfield.
It would be nice to see some Artie Burns before we go all panic mode about CBs. I think gay, cockrell, Davis, and Burns would be an okay start for game day.

Funny when I seen Thomas down on that punt my first thought was punt interference.
Hagan did have a nice ST play, was a bit disappointed on one of V Williams missed tackles but that happens. I like this kid Hamilton think he get a PS spot.

If you think that Hagan can give you what Shark does on ST them dump Shark and save money. Thomas is not going to be allowed to play safety. He is just a bone head.

Jones is what he is. He has not changed since he was benched at OU.
He has arm talent
He can spin it all over the field in 7 on 7's
He lacks poise
He has zero command of the pocket
He doesn't trust his ability come back to his 1st or 2nd reads
Fundamentally he is terrible. Poor footwork...Zero ability to climb the pocket. Can not make throws from multiple arm slots
Pre snap he is also terrible. Fails to read coverages/blitz packages. Rarely if ever varies his snap count
Positives not many
-Starting Oline looked decent
-Starting D line was disruptive
-Defensive backs really did a nice job of tackling
-The Steelers starters played fast at times.
-Special teams showed some promise.
Now the negatives
-Anyone who defends Kevin Colbert watches a different team than I do. This team lacks depth all over the fucking field. The Steelers roster lacks TALENT. IF Ben or AB are injured this team is lucky to win 4 games
-I would fire Joey Porter and Jerry O this morning. The Steelers linebackers have talent. Fundamentally they're terrible. The Steelers linebackers are terrible in space. The Steelers linebackers are the worst tackling group I've seen in my 40 years of watching pro football. The Steelers have one quality linebacker James Harrison..When I say quality I mean can be mentioned in the same breathe as Farrior Nickerson Lloyd...I am not talking HOF like Lambert Ham or Greene. The Steelers are a poorly coached team at linebacker
-Ryan Harris is garbage.
-How the fuck BJ Finney and Chris Hubbard are on this roster is beyond me.
-Boys come to acceptance Jesse James cool name...Terrible football player. He can't run in pads. He can't move his feet. Sammie Coates is a better run blocker. The Steelers have zero decent tight ends on the roster. Jesse James is a detriment when he steps on the field
-Javon Hargraves from what he has put on film...Is a turd. I don't think he could make the 2 deep at Pitt. He stands straight up gives his pads and is dominated in the run game. His pass rush technique consist of eating the offensive linemens punch and quitting. I've seen plenty of busts before...He has the looks of a bust. He was dominated by undrafted free agents two games in a row
-The Steelers better pray they don't have safety injured.
I am really starting to believe the Steelers may be a 4-5 win team this season.
I don't believe they can keep Ben healthy and upright
I don't believe the defense can stop anyone
I don't see many play makers outside of AB
Bell is gone for the 1st four games....Williams is 34 years old
I think the Steelers have a large group of way overrated defenders
My opinion may change down the road...I don't trust this team
-Lack Talent
-Poorly coached at key positions
-Over hyped/ big heads
A team of entitlement

You may find this very hard to believe I was less caustic than I planned to be.
For those looking for a sliver lining
The Steelers sucked in the pre season last year.
I think Tuitt may have a breakout season
James Harrison IMO is still a top OLB in the NFL.
Ben and AB are top 5 players in the NFL regardless of position
Sammie Coates despite the fumbles in the 1st pre season game is going to be a STAR for this team...When a player with talent is willing to work to be great you found something that is how I feel about Coates.
The Steelers front seven is as fast and athletic as any front seven in the NFL. The linebackers tackling scares me. The ability to make plays should scare NFL offenses.
I said it two weeks ago and I stand by it... Team could be 11-5 could be 5-11

Well
Ben
Bell
Gilbert
Deangelo
AB
Wheaton
Bud
Jarvis
Burns
Chickillo
That creates a good bit of depth.
We have none at QB, little at CB. We have no proven starter worth a damn at OLB, and the guys we're counting on haven't practiced in weeks.
I continue to beat the drum: OLB is the biggest problem on the team. Backup QB is next.
I actually think Mitchell, Golden, Davis, Hagen is a pretty solid safety group.

Since I most likely pissed off some posters with comments I am going to post something that is going to further infuriate folks.
I don't believe the Pre season means a fucking thing to the Steelers coaches FO or players.
When the bullets are flying and the games mean something I think the results could be slightly more positive
The Steelers are a paranoid team...They dont want to show teams nothing for free. The Steelers play calling on both sides of the ball was very vanilla.
My fear for the Steelers....Fundamentals cant be optional...Bad habits are impossible to break when its showtime.

I agree about the paranoia and not wanting to show anything to teams. I think it was especially true in this game since we play the Eagles in a little over a month.

Yes you guys are right they don't show nothing to anyone and that goes for game 3-4 . It was funny I thought I saw Big Dan put back into the lineup later in the game when the eagles were running up the middle.
my takes on the initial post are.....i still blame the QB if his arm was hit. How many years of losing preseason games will it take before fans stop freaking out?
Lack talent? Bullshit. This team has plenty of talent if they can keep it on the field. Loads more than most teams. Eagles included.
But hey, DeCastro is softer than baby shit.

I agree with this. The Steelers don't appear to gameplan these games. It looks like a live practice/scrimmage where the Steelers seem content to work on match-ups and getting some tape on players. At some point you will see Vaughn with the second string. With Grad cooked, it will be time to put the bubble wrap on Landry.

Landry sucks balls, and so do the OLBS. Beyond that, there is plenty of depth. A veteran QB and TE are on my wish list. Yes this is an undisciplined team at times, but there is way too much talent for them to not win 10 games.
B2B, I loved the way your boy Hagen played. He was around the ball all night.

To me the only true positive of the entire preseason including camp is no key starters are lost to injuries for the year.
If a rook or two emerges great. If the team builds cohesion great.
But every preseason game I look at as a possibility of losing players for season in an utterly meaningless game.

yet every year there is so much angst about losing preseason games. Two games where Ben, AB and Bell didnt step foot on the field. Not even for a quarter.

I was impressed when I heard that, on Dorian Grant's 1st day at safety, Mike Mitchell and Jacob Hagen were helping him with playcalls and how to play the zones. Then they moved him ahead of Sean Davis as Davis plays nickel.
I like that he offers something different than many of the other guys in the mix: he's capable of playing a one high safety and going to get the football on occasion. He has a little height for the position, too.
IF Ladarious Green is healthy enough to play and IF Bud or hopefully Bud and Jarvis take big steps forward, the pieces are there. I still have trouble seeing a Super Bowl contender going with Laundry Jones as a backup QB. The more tape other teams get on him, the more difficult it's going to be to succeed with him, even for a limited time. Even last year, he was most effective when he came in on the fly and back to shitty when teams prepared for him. No coincidence.
“We are the stupidest fucking franchise ever.” — Smithessmokin
This team looks like garbage in the preseason every year. I won't know how I feel about their chances until after the 4th game. 2/3 of the players AND coaches seem to barely care about the preseason and I think that hurts everyone trying to make the team. Too many half-assed efforts. We are a slow starting team in every aspect and it flows over to how we play the game throughout the season. I don't watch enough of other teams to know if that's how the whole league conducts business these days but I definitely am.glad they haven't exposed Ben to the shit show yet.
Howard Griffith had to resort to chop-blocking him during the 1997 AFC Championship Game. An incredulous Kirkland asked Griffith, “Why do you have to use cheap tactics like chop-blocking?” Griffith replied “Why do you have to be a 300-pound linebacker?”

We want a 4-0 preseason with an average margin of victory by 30 god dammit!
I really cant believe people flip their shit over this when the majority of the Steelers starting O didn't play. Philly per usual runs with their full troop of starters and treats preseason like the playoffs, and imo, still looked like shit.
