Super Bowl Champions and Seeds
Super Bowl Champions and Seeds
For those who are interested, here is a list of Super Bowl winners by seed since the NFL went to the current playoff format in 1990.
If you're interested, a number three seed has won only one time...2006 (Indianapolis Colts).
http://www.nfl.com/superbowlchamps/seeding
That page ends at 2012...number one seeds (Seattle, New England, Denver) have won the last three Super Bowls. Indeed, the last three Super Bowls have matched up the number one seeds from each conference.

Man. There is going to be a playoff game featuring Matt McGloin/Conner Cook vs. Tom Savage/Brock Osweiler

I think we can pencil that in for Saturday afternoon.

When do we get to know the times?

Probably sometime during the game tonight...or right afterwards.

I dont see us playing Saturday night. That would be three years in a row if that would happen. Two years ago loss to Ravens (sucked. I was there) and last year the crazy Bengal game. I am thinking early Sunday game.
On a side note this is first time playing Dolphins in playoffs since 84/85 AFC Championship vs. Marino

Also on a side note, if Lions draft that tight end from Michigan they would have a Cooter as a coach and a Butt as a player

The shitty thing is that had the Steelers D held off the Cowboys for 42 seconds, or had Tomlin and Haley opened up the offense against the Ravens prior to the 4th quarter, the Steelers would have ended up with the #2 seed.
Instead, we're facing an exponentially tougher path as a 3rd seed- the physical Dolphins (with cheap-shotting Suh), likely followed by a trip to Arrowhead. If the Steelers manage to run that gauntlet, then they get to face New England in New England.

Davis' penalty against Dallas was the difference.
It really is a fine line...

if that's a "gauntlet" then PIT probably isn't even a SB pretender

You're just making sure you have to give Tomlin and the Steelers as little credit as possible, aren't you?

We are potentially a #1 seed if Ben never gets hurt.
Outside of that inexplicable 4 game stretch, we were 11-1 (11-2 if you include the MIA loss).

You're underestimating both the Dolphins and the Chiefs. Neither of those teams are jokes. They're both physical teams capable of beating the Steelers if the defense doesn't start tackling better. While the Steelers have to deal with them, the Pats get a bye week followed by either an injury-depleted Raiders team or a terrible Texans team. Beating the Pats at home is a tough task in any circumstances, but I'd feel much more optimistic about the Steelers' chances if the Steelers had the 2nd seed and got to avoid having to play two tough games in a row.
Looks like they're going to wait until tonight's game is over to announce matchups and times.

No, you can only play the teams in front of you.
But it seems like people are building MIA and KC into something they aren't so there's an excuse for not making the AFCC.

No...we are acknowledging that these are good teams, and that it won't necessarily be a coaching failure if we don't beat them both.

No I'm not and yes they are. No one expects those teams to go to a SB, much less win one. NE is tough, as always (and they are there almost every year, so nothing special about this year).
Like I said, you won't find many years where thing line up more favorably than now. If PIT was in the NFC, THEN you'd have a point. But MIA and KC are practically "play-in" games.

Sure, why not. It's only been 6 years since we were in the AFCC let's not raise expectations too high for the guy who's never had a losing season.
I mean, shit, Tomlin loses to MIA....at home....well they're just a good team, starting a back-up QB.
Fucking pathetic. At some point the excuses have to stop and Tomlin needs to be expected to take this team deep in the playoffs. It's been six fucking years - when is it ok to expect more than simply making the playoffs?

The Dolphins and Chiefs are better than the bottom four NFC seeds.
Chiefs are ranked just below the Steelers in betting odds to reach the Super Bowl, so they are not being discounted.
I agree with you...we should beat the Dolphins. Both teams are different than they were for that earlier matchup.
But a loss to the Chiefs would not necessarily be indicative of a coaching failure.
Not everything goes to the coaches.
I'm as critical of Tomlin as anyone.
I don't set things up ahead of time to avoid giving him credit.

LMFAO, no - DAL, GB, ATL. Seriously? SEA and NY, really?
Better than DET, maybe.

I'm not setting anything up. I said TWO YEARS ago before the 2014 season that this team needed to at least make the AFCC by the end of this year or Tomlin should be fired.
If they lose to NE, barring it coming from some "Tomlin-type" thing, I'll hope he builds on it. KC's odds are what they are purely as a function of being the #2 seed (basic math).
It's not about diminishing or making excuses - it's past time for this team to go on a deep playoff run. The standard is the standard. There's really no reason to even talk about the schedule - which IS about as favorable as it gets - unless you're setting yourself up to deal with expected disappointment.

No, not Dallas and Atlanta (though the Chiefs did beat the Falcons this year). I said the bottom four. Who out of the Seahawks, Giants, Packers, and Lions scares you? The Chiefs are tough at Arrowhead, and it's hard to scoff at the Dolphins after they beat our asses once this year. Even though I think the Steelers will beat the Dolphins, it's still going to be a game that I wish we wouldn't have had to play.

I mentioned the schedule so as to compare it to the schedule that was setting up before the Raiders lost and Chiefs won.
But on it's own, a schedule of the Dolphins, Chiefs, and Patriots to get to the Super Bowl is a tough schedule whether you want to acknowledge it or not.
You can't just discount Arrowhead as some non-factor. It IS a factor that will make the Chiefs a tougher outnthan they otherwise might be.
Oh...and the Chiefs were ranked right up there BEFORE they got the number two seed.

And I don't see how anyone is making excuses for Tomlin here. I'm lamenting that the Steelers didn't seal the deal against the Cowboys and that they came out with a shitty, stale gameplan against the Ravens in Baltimore, because that put them in a substantially worse position than they should have been in. That's on Tomlin & Co.

Pissed, but not surprised, that its chefs in divisional round. We were giddy last week w prospect of facing pair of backups, but those backups being in this week made it less likely that we would eventually face them. As for schedule as has been predicted here if Packers win tonight I think they face giants on Saturday night if Lions win Steelers will be on Saturday night

Which is why I think the NFL is waiting until after tonight's game to announce the times and matchups, instead of at halftime like some people said were announced.
