Better than not extending him.

@AdamSchefter: Steelers finalizing a new multi-year extension with CB Cortez Allen, per league source. Deal expected shortly.

4/26. Supposedly Crap Report had it first...

Nice they aren't losing another young player, but 4 years and 26 million is steep. Especially when they didn't even offer the superior Keenan Lewis a contract. They lost a top 10 corner for less than they have Allen. Losing talented players you draft for mediocre contract amounts is worse than missing on draft picks.

With his new found Wealth let us hope for a pick six and 5 passes defended.

Pittsburgh Steelers @steelers 3m
We have signed @Cortez_Allen to a new five-year contract that will keep him with the team through the 2018 season.
Guess this means Worilds is locked up for 2015 too.

nfl.com is saying it's a 4/26 extension. I guess that means he's honoring his current contract for this year.
Of course nfl contracts are not guaranteed, so all the really matters is the signing bonus and the cap hit. In case this "ascending player" doesn't keep ascending.

The Steelers release reads like a 5 year 26 million dollar deal which would include what he was due this year. $5 million per year average is pretty much the going rate for decent starters. Not as steep as it first looked.

It's a fair price for starting CB
I think he's ahead of Keenan Lewis in development at similar points in their career

With cap going up next year this was a good signing!

No, the "he got BEN'S money" comments.
Fair deal.
I think Allen has room for growth...I think he could be a very solid # 2 corner and I like the deal

The Steelers went down to the wire in talks with the starting cornerback before announcing Saturday night they reached terms on a new five-year contract that runs through 2018. The deal is worth slightly more than $26 million.

IMO a great deal. 5 years @ $26Mil is about right.
New contracts for Polamalu and Miller
New contracts for Pouncey, Wallace and Gilbert
Extend Allen
Hire Mike Munchak
Hire James Saxon
Hire Joey Porter
Mitchell, Blount, Thomas, Moore, Heyward-Bey, McCain and Moats
Really one of the most busy off seasons as far as hirings and signings are concerned in recent memory. Not a bad.

I would like to say you're wrong but you're not. I know this is a much needed signing but knowing that they basically gave Allen the same contract that they could've given to Lewis, who was more proven, is kind of sad. I hope that Allen becomes a really good corner for us since now they'll be paying for his potential instead of a proven commodity at this point.

I don't like it.
I don't see him lighting the world on fire this season. I see him as possibly easily upgraded in FA. I don't see him as a core talent that you worry about hitting the FA market. Colbert say's he expects to be more active in FA and this looked like a good place to wait and see on CA....

I thought it was common knowledge that Lewis didnt want to sign here, he wanted to go home to NO, which leads me to believe they didnt offer him because he wouldnt sign here unless we broke the bank for him, wasnt going to happen.

I gotta agree on this. Allen=JAG
A lot of reporters seem to be sloppy with the terminology....typically, a 4-yr extension is a 5-yr deal because it's added onto the current contract with 1-yr remaining.
I was looking for 4/$22. $6.5M is a bit steep, but depends on the structure. I know what the peanut gallery is going to say, but consider Alterraun Verner - a PRO BOWL FA with 5 picks and 23 passes defensed last year - signed for 4/$25.5M in March.....so I'll say again, 4/$26M a year from free agency with the current body of work...WTF?!? Allen definitely got the "gun to the head" price.

I'm optimistic this will turn out to be a good deal.
The other thing to consider....Allen may be a JAG much like Sanders, but just like Sanders there probably won't be anyone better to grab in FA, especially with the FA pool at corner a little then and teams desperate for DB's. A similar swap to Sanders for Moore/DHB wouldn't be all that great.
Anyway, all the key guys are signed so they prevented themselves from getting caught with 1 tag (which could very well be Worilds) and multiple FA's.

Steelers are reaching on this guy.Keenan Lewis was a big mistake, to let him get away.Lewis was a train wreck till his contract year. I just have not seen consistent play from Cortez. He has shown quicker flashes than Lewis but I am leary of this extension.Find another late round gem like u did with IKE.

If it were that easy don't you think everyone would be doing it?

This is very good news. We couldn't afford to lose another CB to free agency. We're about as thin as it gets in the secondary.

Cortez could be that late round gem. 4th rounder out of Citadel. Ike was also a 4th rounder when drafted.
