The longest pass of Big Ben's career
The longest pass of Big Ben's career
Don't ask me why I'm doing this on a holiday weekend, but I was going down the Youtube rabbit hole and was trying to figure out the longest pass of Ben's career. Not the longest pass play, but the longest completion in terms of air yards.
I believe he had 2 completions in his career that went over 60 yards. Here is the longest pass:
1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAwSeIWS0Mg#t=9m2s - I've got it at 63 yards on this bomb to Mike Wallace against the Cowboys (9:02 of the video)
And a close second:
2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCRUC7NyhBM#t=1m56s - I've got this at around 61 yards on this TD to Bryant against the Jets
Most of his other long bombs were right in that 50-55 yard range and I didn't see anything else topping 60. Any passes I'm missing? As an aside, that 2014 season was something. I think that was his peak in terms of the combo of physical and mental abilities.

Damn still makes me sick to think of how good Bryant could have been. Wasted talent for sure.
Howard Griffith had to resort to chop-blocking him during the 1997 AFC Championship Game. An incredulous Kirkland asked Griffith, “Why do you have to use cheap tactics like chop-blocking?” Griffith replied “Why do you have to be a 300-pound linebacker?”

Fuck Bryant. Guy could have been a legend. But nope; drugs were more important.
Well played dude.

I went down a similar rabbit hole of watching highlights from the Killer B's era last night, so I'm right with you on this
That pass to Bryant was great, though the one I always think of is the very next clip in that video (94-yarder versus Bungs); 'only' 50 air yards but what a beaut
Seriously though, Ben in that era...the third 500-yard game (vs Ravens), the 'Pale Grey Rider' game vs. Cleveland, more TDs than incompletions vs. Carolina, the sadly doomed playoff game vs. the Jags...and especially the duel with Andrew Luck, possibly the greatest game a QB has ever played
A hot Ben was the best to ever do it

Think OP is going for ‘yards in the air’.

It goes to show you that you don't need to spin the ball 65 or 70 yards to be an all-time great. Deep throws are often more about timing, arc, and understanding where the safety is. One thing about Ben though that you can't measure is that 20-25 yard ball on the intermediate routes. He coud really fire that in there with heat and precision. He had an absolute rocket on those throws in his prime.
He was deadly with those.franco32 wrote: ↑Tue May 31, 2022 12:27 pmIt goes to show you that you don't need to spin the ball 65 or 70 yards to be an all-time great. Didn't Ben throw it through the goal posts from the 50, flat footed, on his pro day? Not quite Joe Flacco from one knee, but I'd say that translates to 70+ yards if he really steps into it.

I remember that first game. AB fumbled a punt and it changed the entire game.tbsteel wrote: ↑Sun May 29, 2022 10:21 pmDon't ask me why I'm doing this on a holiday weekend, but I was going down the Youtube rabbit hole and was trying to figure out the longest pass of Ben's career. Ben's pass to AB in the '10 AFCDG has to rank up there, just purely in terms of air yards. It covered about 55 yards worth of field hashes, but went much further when considering he threw it from the middle of the field to near the sideline. He really roped it, too.

Funny though he made it harder than it had to be...wonder if he lost it in the lights?
