Unleashing Hell in December

Post by SteelPro » Fri Dec 27, 2024 9:07 pm

Steelers have had 3 game losing streaks during December in 4 of the last 6 seasons. 5 of the last 7 seasons featured 3 game losing streaks after Thanksgiving. Hell indeed.

I think his best coaching job was in a loss. 2015 after the Burfict game. Had them in position with no running back, no Antonio Brown, and Ben with one shoulder to upset Peyton Manning and Denver.. then Fitzgerald Toussaint fumbled

But that’s part of Jibba’s “Standard”.

Always always always have a glaring hole somewhere on the roster to later be used as an excuse. That way he can cry to dunce if only we had a bit more depth here and a player there I’d be able to compete.

Nevermind the fact those holes are quite often his own doing as a result of poor drafting and/or roster construction.

From there, his Ace in the Hole are his “yes men” position coaches and coordinators that he has hand picked and forces to do things his way.

They end up as sacrificial lambs as his boss is too fucking dumb, lazy, or indifferent to realize those below Tomlin are doing exactly as Tomlin wishes.

Always has an excuse. Never his fault.
Jibba Jabber’s offense hasn’t scored more than 7 1st quarter points in 81 consecutive games. An NFL record by far. A historic amount of “easin in”. We are lucky to have him.

True.

But with salary cap I think we have to admit he has had some bad injury luck too

Let’s not forget though that one of those playoff losses we went into the season needing a RB.

Jibbs got cute and took we bitty Dre Archer in the 3rd round.

When playoffs rolled around and his bell cow was hurt what did he do???

He pulled an old and rusty Ben Tate off his couch to start that playoff game.

Why?

Because the shiny toy he took in the 3rd round was so small and pathetic he was t capable of playing the position in the NFL.

You take flyers on gadget guys like that when you have a stocked championship roster already.

We had a glaring need for another RB and took a cute lil toy instead.

Who was the stud RB Atalanta took a few picks later???

Would have been nice to give that guy the ball instead of already out of the league Ben Tate.

Injuries happen. Especially to often used RBs.

Jibbs did that to us and that loss can’t be blamed on injury.

Sometimes "Bad Luck" is really the result of poor planning.

For years, Tomlin's mantra was to run the wheels off his # 1 RB regardless of what was behind him. He said it out loud more than once. Hell, one year, Bell was out at the beginning of the season so we started with DeAngelo Williams. He was either leading the league in rushing or close to it when Bell returned and yet he still couldn't get more than a few carries a game after that.

That kind of thinking / planning is how you find yourself with key players hurt every time you reach the post season!

It could come down to how they practice, maybe they don't value rest and recovery as much as toughness and banging heads through the week. I don't know but it seems like they have had a lot of practice injuries. They definitely seem to break down late in the season.

Prior proper planning prevents piss poor performance.

Of all the fancy catch phrases the master Wordsmiff tosses around with frequency it’s a shame he doesn’t know nor apply this very important one.

Poor Jibbs. Always lost in the forest looking for trees.

That was 2014. The Steelers also had LeGarrette Blount that year, but pissed him off by not using him as much as he was promised before signing. He pouted and they cut him. The Steelers didn't sign another back after that until Bell got injured the week before the playoffs. That's when they had to resort to signing Tate.

To make matters worse, had the Steelers not blown games against the 2-14 Bucs and the 4-12 Jets that year, then they would have had the 1 seed secured and might have been able to rest starters that final week. Instead, thanks to losing a few Tomlin trap games, the Steelers had to play wild card weekend against the Ravens with a brand new RB. The Ravens could tee off on Ben all game, eventually concussing him. Meanwhile, LeGarrette Blount wins a Super Bowl with the Patriots.

2014 in general was a shit show and wasted Ben's absolute peak. It ranks with 2018 as Tomlin's worst seasons.

Agreed that 2015 was one of Tomlin's best performances. That's one year that I'd give a little credence to the injury excuse- losing Bell mid-season, then DeAngelo Williams the last week of the regular season was unfortunate and really hurt the Steelers' offense. Maybe if they had Bell or Williams they would have won that game against the Broncos.

I drove 11 hours from New Hampshire day of that playoff debacle to attend. Sat with my high school coach, bill priatko and later went with him to Steelers reception area to talk with dick lebeau..."can't do that shit in the playoffs," said lebeau. The douchebag art II walked by....wanted to punch him in the face.

Then, was staying the night with friends in Carlisle, had to drive across the turnpike. Stopped at the somerset plaza to get a Diet Coke and the place was crawling with those purple bitches, riding their shitty bus back to baltimore

You should have taken one for the team and punched Dunce in the face.

Hard enough to knock him into retirement.

You would have gone down as a hero in Steelers lore.

Here's something else I shoulda done. Steelers vs patriots in '98. Three rivers stadium was a great venue for heckling, opposing teams bus would pull up underneath the stadium and the players would disembark about 10 feet from the fandom. '98 was ripe with the Kordell is gay rumors from schenley park. Well, I start yapping at the patriots, "Kordell's gonna run all over yo asses today!!" And other choice words. Now, none of the players EVER say anything back. THIS time tho, zeafross moss, a 350 pounder turns to me, says "kordell sucks dick!!" I was fuckin speechless...shocked, had nothing to say. I SHOULDA said, "so's ya momma!" And had zeafross chase me, pull his hamstring, been unable to play, Steelers win!! I was fuckin speechless tho.

Spot on Franco.
The week in and week out mantra, philosophy, game plan of attrition football. Pound the rock, keep it close, etc..... which is the approach in practice too.....
Is wearing, fatiguing. ... takes its toll. Injuries mount. Legs become weary and slow.
Proof is in the results in the December collapses.

The offensive book is well defined for opponents to figure out and game plan. The offense approach does not adjust or change course.

The defense is on the field more and more.... and beat to shit. The scheme and play calling does not change.

For the players, the writing on the wall, and story is unfolding as expected.
"Tomlin has never appreciated the role of scheme and play call in the ability for player's to execute" Kodiak.

True.

But with salary cap I think we have to admit he has had some bad injury luck too

2010 SB with Pouncey

2011 Denver Tebow game Ben was hurt

2014 Wild Card game Bell gets hurt last week of the season

2015 mentioned above

2016 AFCC Bell hurt 1st quarter

2017 Shazier

2018 Bell holdout

2019 Ben

2023 TJ out Wild Card

Not an excuse. Just sayin
Realistically, only 2010, 2014, and 2017 were Super Bowl caliber rosters, imo. And for better or worse, those teams' aspirations were predicated upon superstar talent.

2010 could have been slightly different too if Troy had not been a bit hobbled in XLV.

People [not posters here] keep talking about how impressive NHALS is. But I'm always like, parity rules the NFL. Most games come down to Q4, if not the last possession. Tomlin has had a good FO giving him above average talent, and has been able to have HOFers like Ben, Watt and Boswell bail him out of games. And so he has managed to be a little less mediocre than the 20 other mediocre coaches in that middle tier.

It's a real advantage not to have to win a playoff game to keep your job. Gives him the luxury of playing conservative and keeping things simple and wait for other teams trying to build something to shoot themselves in the foot.

At the end of the day, this is all Cowher's fault. If he hadn't left a stacked and loaded roster and staff ready to win a SB on autopilot, Tomlin would likely have been out of the league well over a decade ago.

Last januarys PR machine

https://www.nfl.com/news/steelers-presi ... in-drought
When a CEO, or a team owner says they've had enough, usually it doesn't bode well for those reporting to that individual.
For the Steelers, it simply means now is the time to turn the corner.
"We've had enough of this," Steelers owner and team president Art Rooney II said, via ESPN. "It's time to get some wins, it's time to take these next steps."
The next steps already began with the Steelers' coaching staff, where some wondered whether Mike Tomlin would return in 2024. He'd just led the Steelers on a successful operation of desperation, reaching the playoffs by winning all three of their final games, but isn't under contract beyond 2024, which is the first instance in which Tomlin is approaching a contract year during his long tenure in Pittsburgh.

Funny how Schenley parks, UFOs, Sasquatch, Big Foot, and Loc Ness sightings all dropped of a cliff with smart phones! You saw all this and didn’t have your phone? Riiiight!
....but they are still out there searcing....
