Tomlin retiring won’t matter much

Post by SteelerDayTrader » Wed Jan 14, 2026 1:53 pm

- Still gonna have the dumbfuck Rooney’s running things

- Still gonna be stuck in Pittsburgh tethered far too close to some of the dumbest fans anywhere

- Still gonna be stuck with identity football

It was beyond time for Tomlin to go.

Unfortunately the Steelers problems run much deeper than just Tomlin

Maybe.

It may depend on who they hire. They will give any new hire a lot of space and latitude to make their mark, to put their imprint on the team. It will depend on who they get really. It will require a change of culture on several levels, not quite to the extent needed in 1969, but many things need to be fixed. I think the right person could turn it around in a year or two and the Rooneys will give him that time.

Ben, “I understand that Steelers football is about defense and running the ball, but why not mix it up? Why not bring in a head coach that’s offensive minded that would kind of change it up. Because, listen, let’s be honest, six points is not enough points in a playoff game. You can’t do that. Let’s bring in a head coach that’s offensively minded and allow him to then bring in a defensive coordinator. I would love to see a little bit of a shift in the head coach to be more of an offensive guy.”
Can’t agree ‘More’ with the statement quoted above. I know most here have been thinking it for years.

IMO, This is when and where I believe the Steelers make that change joining the modern football era.

Poor Ben had to LIVE that for 15 years.

This is as close as I think we'll see Ben come to criticize. "6 points isn't enough, hire an offensive-minded HC". That's the most PC-way you could say the problem is Tomlin doesn't play to win.

Some lean years ahead no doubt but beyond refreshing to think about a sideline absent that game day dumbfuck.

I think patience will be required of this idiot fan base as we go backwards to hopefully move forward in our pursuit of the elusive playoff win.

One day we will jizz all over opponents again, but it’s gonna be a few years.

There's hope again they could actually WIN a playoff game with coaching and scheme rather than, you know, lotto luck.

And a huge part of the problem was an unlikable team that was not enjoyable to watch. I'd take a 6-11 team that's exciting and unpredictable over the mediocre slop we've gotten most of the last 15 years.

There's a huge difference between this situation and the Cowher retirement.

Cowher retired with a stocked roster, a young franchise QB, a complete staff and a well established front office and scouting group. It was Tomlin's role to "jump aboard a moving train" and to win with the existing guys.

The new guy will have very little of that. So I suspect that there are a lot more opportunities for change now.

I cannot wait for Ben to go on a shitposting bender after his HOF induction.

there doesnt have to be lean year(s) it could be 1 -- they have a boatload of picks this draft
there are a few keys:

1. a new young staff with offensive mind at HC but high quality innovative coordinators -- group effort and aggressive style
2. early hard work -- clean house of vets, ideas and new culture ... you can be tough Steeler team/identity and still be innovative ... in fact, IMO Cowher and Noll were
3. next two years draft and develop very well - they have like 20 picks in next two draft and now have good nucleus on OL and DL
4. have to get the QB right in 2027 draft or FA (preferably draft). If they feel strongly about one of the 2027 draft QBs consider trading this years 1 and stinking u p the joint in 2026 season;).

that said, they have makings of a good OL now -- so maybe if you feel super string about Mendoza ... but I think the Raiders price for that will be way too high especially for a rebuilding team

they can compete in 2027 season if done well
