I don't think the Steelers actually make a choice with the void here. The language in the contract is that if he's suspended, the guarantees automatically void. There's no real discretion there for them.
As I understand it, this doesn't void the contract, just the fact that it is guaranteed. That means he still gets paid if / when he plays but, if they decide to cut him at some point, they aren't obligated for the money that was originally guaranteed.

On Sunday I was a bit sympathetic toward DK but if he falsely accused the dirtbag of racist slurs to cover his ass, he's a piece of shit like Juicy and Bubba.

The fan is still a piece of shit no matter what.

Suspension upheld:
Breaking: The NFL upheld DK Metcalf’s two-game suspension, per Adam Schefter. He will now miss the Pittsburgh Steelers’ final two regular-season games at Cleveland and against Baltimore.

He also loses $555,556 in salary and has the guarantees on $45M voided.

Robin DAngelo Stoogerooney given an early XMas gift but he will be too guilt ridden to cash in and avoid sunken costs.

If the Steelers choose to void his guarantees over this bullshit offense it could poison the free agents against them. They should just let it go and keep the contact in place.

That’s why it makes sense that the voiding is done automatically. It takes the decision out of the hands of the team and there won’t be any negative blowback.

If it were up to the Steelers and Art the Lessor, no way does he have the balls to void the guarantee. However, if it is done automatically and was agreed to by collective bargaining, no one can do anything about it.

This was my thought. The NFL doesn't want individual teams to necessarily burn bridges with players. They all want protection and minimal blowback. The Steelers can pat Metcalf on the back and tell them they support him all they want, but it doesn't really change the reality that they'd be screwing over the other 31 NFL owners by not enforcing that mechanism if they could.

The league probably wouldn't want teams to have the discretion here for this exact sort of scenario. The language in the contract seems black and white to my non-lawyer ass.

Florio is reporting shit from agents that the teams have to or at least usually do send a letter letting the player know the void occurred, but he seemingly can't point to anything in the CBA let alone the contract itself that demands such a thing to trigger the void.

Metcalf probably ends up getting his money from the contract because it's how the Steelers do business. He'd have to have a disastrous 2026 for him not to see 2027. But the guarantees exist for a reason.

Jussie Metcalf and the NFL might have to pay this guy for pulling the race card. I hope they do. False, defamatory accusations of the type that Jussie Metcalf made can seriously damage someone's reputation and get them fired. It's about time there are some consequences. I wish they'd cut Jussie Metcalf.
