2014 offense dream team
This is just for fun. Who would you take?
Wr. C Johnson (easy)
Wr. Fitz. (Still think he has it)
Wr. Julio jones. (Coming off injury should regain top form)
Te. Gronkowski if healthy (athletic as j smith and can block)
Lt. Joe Thomas ( the best IMO)
Lg. mike lupati. (Same)
C. Mike pouncey. ( anchors better than our pouncey)
Rg. Decastro of all people ( expect a another huge improvement)
Rt. Andre smith Cincy ( fat but immovable)
QB. Big Ben ( homer but with this oline?)
RB. Lesean McCoy (can run inside the tackles but better outside)
What say you?

Burfict over Bowman and Willis? Come on man!

Figured someone would inquire about either. Bowman is coming off a disgustingly gut wrenching injury and isn't expected to play til late 2014 if at all. Thought about Willis too. Just a personal opinion I like Burfict and Kuechly. You aren't expected to agree or anything.

I'm not as high on Chancellor as many are...to me he is a poor man's Atwater, not so sure how he is if the play isn't obvious and in front of him. It came down to Barry, Byrd or TP...TP's versatility and smarts won...not saying he hasn't lost a step...but I'm optimistic he has a big pub year if he doesn't have to play in the box constantly.

now, THAT's an insult. Atwater sucked. He was an overrated Anthony Smith headhunter who blew chunks in coverage and couldn't tackle.
Chancellor has coverage skills Troy never had-- Troy has a great, legendary nose for the ball but he can't blanket in coverage vs. RB, TE, or WR the way KC can. They're both great run defenders and they both are guys who make their defense special-- you can identify what defense it is presnap but each of those two guys do stuff you don't expect.
I know we disagree but I think Chancellor was the most valuable defender in the league last year.

I think a bit more highly of Atwater then you do.
But my point is in the Hags system he is virtually another LB. From what I've seen he is virtually interchangeable with KJ Wright who might be the most under rated player on that defense. They both will occasionally man up with the TE...but it's mostly the same in the box, take away short crossing routes, and intermediate zone drops stuff. He doesn't get many picks or PDs...and when he does it's because QB's misjudge that length. I don't think he is near the cover guy that TP is.
I think TP is being dismissed from top S consideration to early. They asked more of him last year then they have asked for out of any defensive player that I can remember. Everything from ILB to disguising coverage with a 0 tech alignment to manned up with the slot receivers...so he blew a couple of high profile coverages and missed a few high profile tackles because of a shit field. But for all he had to know, and all he had to do, that was a top notch season coming off the injury. If you add up big plays from last year- picks, forced fumbles, passes defensed, and tackles for loss...TP's production-27 Chancellor-15
I'll give Chancellor this...he was huge in the post season. But going into those games he was rated 12 at Safety by PFF. Now I don't take PFF for much more then I do typical media...but they do grade every play by multiple "scouts" and quality control those scouts pretty well. I just don't think the Hags ask much more of him then an extra LB

I lived in Denver for his whole career, so likely saw more of Atwater than you might have. He was a huge liability, often sacrificing coverage and making the play in order to seek the big hit. Yeah, that hit on Okoye was legendary but I thought he was the most overrated defensive player in the NFL in those days. He was a guy you could sucker/exploit.

I remember that 1989 draft well. I never liked the two safeties picked in the first round, those being Denver's Atwater and Miami's Louis Oliver, both couldn't hold a candle to the safety we chose in round 2.
That safety? Why our current defensive backs coach Carnell Lake!
I know Denver is trying to drum up support for him being a Hall of Famer but Atwater was just okay.
Which safety drafted in 1989 had 25 sacks for his career? That would be Lake, Atwater had just 5 sacks.
Which one scored 5 TDs off of interception and fumble recoveries? That would be Lake, Atwater had just 1 TD.
Lake had less INTs, 16 to Atwater's 24 but Lake was a ballhawk in other ways with 15 forced fumbles and 17 fumble recoveries in addition to all of those sacks. I remember he could cover like a CB and earned a Pro Bowl berth at CB when he was filling in for an injured Woodson. Anybody remember the game where we played Cincy and their WR Carl Pickens caught the ball and Carnell closed the gap on him and could have made the tackle but instead went for the big play?
What big play you ask? Well, Lake mirrored Pickens step for step, let him run an additional 20 yards and then punched the ball out of his hands, forced the fumble and we recovered the ball. It was a Troy Polamalu type of play. Lake was a great player, a great safety and Atwater just pales in comparison. Lake had a Hall of Fame career, Atwater got by on an early rep and was not deserving of many of those Pro Bowl nods that he got. How can you claim to be a Hall of Fame safety when you weren't even the best safety from your draft class?
