To all the realists ..... We went 6-10 in 2003. We turned it around in 2004 and went 15-1.
This team is not held back by past failures. This team is now young, fast and "hitting like a Yinzer Steeler likes".

I'll be honest, I was down the last couple years. But I think they have their shit together this year. No more slow ass WR's and RB's, more talent on OL, opening up the offense, speed on defense.
I expect no less than a division title this year and Im not one to consider myself the eternal optimist

I wasn't down the last couple of years. Everybody has to rebuild sometime. Now we're getting some good young talent in, and we're getting ready to rock and roll again.

Good post and valid points; we simply need to get rid of the stupid mistakes that have cost us a bunch of games the last few years. We may not have a lot of depth and we are in a tough division. Limit mistakes, play inspired football, and this team will win the North and probably a 2 seed.

oh, Lance Moore and Blount are still here... but, yeah, the pieces are starting to come together.

I tend to be a little pessimistic with the Steelers; however, I think this team is way better than 8-8. Normally I say pre-season doesn't matter, but the energy on this team thus far makes me optimistic. I'm less than optimistic with the coaching staff and hope they wake up.

We've had more than our fair share of stupid mistakes. We've grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory 3-4 times the past couple of seasons. We're in the playoffs the past two years without JV level plays (and coaching) late in close games.

Yeah, I don't trust Mike Tomlin anymore and Todd Haley scares the shit out of me. Roethlisberger is amazing, but if we have any injuries at WR, OLB, CB...basically anywhere....we're fucked.
That said, I think we should win 10 games.

I just think it's a matter of talent level being re-upped...
On O we start...
6 first or 2nd round picks.
BR, Miller, Bell, Gilbert, DeCastro, Pouncey
On D we start...
7 first or 2nd round picks
Worilds, Heyward, Tuitt, Jones, Timmons, Shazier, Polamalu
That's a solid core of players, even if a few are long in the tooth.
Would be disappointed if we don't do a lot better than .500. Might not go far in the playoffs, simply because a few key guys will be really raw and maybe unused to the long haul. Still... This could be a very good team.
It all comes down to Ben, without him we are under .500 . Biggest nightmare is Ben out for season!

Ben had a banner year last year we still went 8-8... We needed 2 drafts to fix the fuck story on defense, basically.
I'm not saying you can win without BR on a consistent basis, but all things being equal this is a more talented squad, overall, than we've seen in a few years. Should be fun.

To this point I'm sticking with 9-7.
I've been pleasantly surprised by a couple of players so far...but I remain unconvinced they have fixed the rush O and D, or we have a red zone receiving threat.
This is the first week we will be game planned...and the first week vs a winning NFL team. I'll have a much better feel after this game...

Totay agree. There's a bigger sense of energy coming from this team in recent years. I think that's because the team is much younger than it has been the past few seasons. They are all hungry.

4 of those 7 on defense are our LB core. Hopefully this unit gels as the season goes on. I'm hoping JJ gets in on Thursday. Any updates?

We're going to give a lot of teams some surprising looks this season. And we're going to smash some people in the mouth so fast their heads will be spinning.
As with all years, injuries are key, as in not having too many. But this year, particularly, for this team, that will be ultra-critical, I believe. Early prognosis is that the depth might be weak. Could be wrong, it's only into the 3rd week of pre-season, but that's the early "look". Otherwise, I think we're going to be right on the money where we need to be. 10 or more wins, into the playoffs, and once there, anything can happen.
Look out, National Football League. The Pittsburgh Steelers are BACK baby!
Let's GO!

Well look at the division as a whole, it's mediocre all around. If you told me every team in the division ended up 8-8, it wouldn't surprise me. So yeah I'd say a division title is doable.

Ross Tucker this morning on the Morning Drive on Sirius was asked about the Steelers Defense. He said if they can get production out of Jones and Tuitt, it represents a complete rebuild of a front 7 that could be top-10 this year, in under two seasons - a fairly remarkable feat.
I know a lot of people have been raking Colbert over the coals the past few years for a few unremarkable drafts, but there is quite a nexus of young talent on this team on both sides of the ball and I believe it will sneak up on this division because of some very ill-timed injuries to key picks. I fully expect us to make the playoffs this year, and get back to winning division titles this year or next.

Jervis is the key. If he can dominate vs the run and get consistent pressure, the whole thing will work. If he's slow to develop or doesn't show improvement on the field, we'll be limited in what we can do without blitzing.

From the captain obvious department, we can't afford injuries to Ben, AB, the OL or DL. Anywhere else I think we can survive.
Depth on the lines is horrendous.

I actually think OL depth is decent, at least on gameday. We'll have 5 starters plus Adams and Wallace... not a big dropoff from the guys they'd replace. Beyond that, it suuuuuuucccccckkkkkkkks.
DL, we'll have 4 guys, which may be enough, considering how few snaps we'll have 3 on the field.

I guess we could live through a game or two with Adams or the Doctor. To your point beyond that it's grim.
On DL the only player I really trust to play at a high level is Heyward, so my DL concerns are less about depth, more about talent of the starters. I think these guys can pass rush better than the typical steelers D-line, but I don't trust them in run D.

Over the last two years we've been outplayed in 3 games (NE, SD, Cleveland (8 TOs). I mean manhandled with absolutely no chance of winning. In all those other games late turnovers killed us.
I like what Ben did the second have of last year and his attitude on mental errors this year (he pointed it out as a reason for the offense's potency) and I love what we have on the field on defense this year and we havent seen a x dog blitz from the starters yet. Not saying we are going 15-1 but I can see 12-4 as a real possibility if we clean up those TOs and get some for ourselves.
