OT: Andre Johnson wants out of Houston
We would never get him, but he would be a great fit.
A bigger Hines Ward.
Details of divide between Andre Johnson & #Texans is posting on @NFL.com. He told them he wants to play for another team. Houston resisting

Imagine how much better our team would be with a WR corp of 1) AB, 2) AJ, 3) Moore/Wheaton as opposed to 1) AB, 2) Moore 3) Wheaton.

I'd offer a 2 in a heartbeat....
He would be so awesome in a PIT uniform. Shame they would never do it even if it could happen.
And not to start that argument again, but that's why I favored Velasco/Wallace over Pouncey because that extra $5M/yr is like half the money you'd need for an Andre Johnson.

They have the cap space to go get him right now if they had a mind.

Are you suggesting that if we signed V or W instead of Pouncey, the Steelers would be pursuing AJ?

What the hell happened there? When he signed that extension a couple seasons ago he was literally crying tears of joy and publicly and profusely thanking the organization for his deal.

Maybe its the QB situation and the downward trend of the team's performance.....he may actually want to win a SB.
he's not the red zone guy ward was. a part of me thinks you'd have to be crazy to essentially go all in on a 33-year old receiver, another part just wants to take any chance at all to see what ben looks like with a legit WR corps for once in his life.SteelBack wrote:We would never get him, but he would be a great fit.

I would love it but there is a snowballs chance in hell of it happening

I'm saying if they had that extra $5M/yr they gave Pouncey over those guys then the possibility of a signing a guy like AJ increases dramatically.
The way I've always looked at it is you can pay about 8-9 top tier guys. For PIT that is Ben, AB, Timmons, Pouncey, probably Worilds and Heyward, and Decastro. Then you have Troy and Miller/Mitchell (all signed thru 2016), with a glaring hole at #1 corner.
So the 1 guy who we've seen was somewhat replaceable was Pouncey. They chose to pay him, which means you're looking at someone else walking to sign an AJ, and I don't see anyone else they let walk to make that happen.

What happened is they didnt spend a #1 pick on a QB. Nor did they make a move to bring in a good veteran. He has had dogshit throwing to him for most of his career, with occasional splashes of mediocrity He has been the good soldier, but just as the team was on the cusp of the SB, everything imploded. When it imploded the pathetic coach kept his head up his ass until the owner mandated otherwise (benching Schaub). Andre wants to win, not waste the rest of his career on yet another rebuilding process.
The long and distinguished list of Texans signal callers (a few for garbage time/spot duty):
Carr
Banks
Ragone
Rosenfells
Schaub
Grossman
Yates
Leinhart
Keenum
and now
Fitzgerald
Savage

Mike Tomlin: Bringing mediocrity to the 'Burgh for over a decade.

That's a good point. Although he's shown no signs of slowing down the past two years with crap around him and garbage throwing him the ball. But most receivers do seem to hit a wall where their performance just drops off a cliff.
On the other hand, the contract a trading team assumes is 3 years for $10.5M per year PLUS $1M roster bonuses each year, but there's virtually no risk of dead money to the new team. But in 2015/16 is he still an $11.5M guy, which is where the implicit value of a draft pick factors in?

What are you gonna pay him with? You signed Mitchell in the off season, Pouncey was just resigned. You'll need to sign Heyward, Tez Allen and extend Ben. Not a chance of ever happening. Nice fantasy though. I suspect Johnson has one of the competing teams at the top of the heap (with the cap space) likely targeted.

Are you confusing the Steelers with someone else? When was the last time we signed a huge name FA, let alone a big name WR?

Exactly. They could have 50 mil in cap space, and this wouldn't happen. Simply because this isn't what they do.

When was the last time they had cap space to sign a big FA? They have a history of overpaying what they know rather than compete for difference makers in FA.

One of the best shows ever, and one that would never make it on prime time air in today's thin skinned, shrieking, PC culture.

Oh. So how does that disprove my point? They just don't sign big name FAs. They usualy reward their own drafted players. Right or wrong that's what they do.
There have been exceptions....James Farrior comes to mind. But that is typically not what they do.
Always kills me when a big name player becomes available and Steeler fans rip management for not signing them.

And that doesn't absolve them from criticism. It all goes back to how they manage their contracts and the cap. The point was, even if they wanted to sign big-name free agents THEY DON'T GIVE THEMSELVES THAT OPTION. And they deserve criticism for that.

And then we get back philosophical differences of individuals who've never done it think that their way is better
Probably why there is more than one ok d of business model

The bang cartoon archive is gone, good thing I saved them as video files
"If our team doesn't face enough adversity early on in a season, I create it. Nothing builds a team like adversity." ~ Mike Tomlin

When was the last time a team signed a "big name" free agent and it put them over the top?
Most successful teams don't go after "the big names".
Instead, they draft well and use FA for value additions.
