OT: Sunday Ticket now "available" without satellite dish

The catch is you must be in NY/SF/Philadelphia metro areas OR live in an apartment complex OR be a student at one of the 10 partner universities.

If it wasn't $199.99 (or more, depending on the package you get), I'd be all for it.

10 years ago I probably would have paid whatever they asked for Sunday Ticket.

Now, I wouldn't pay more than $50.

I pay for it without any worries. Watching my steelers is one of the few pleasures in life that I make no compromise for as long as I can pay for it. I don't do bars, and I hate "football parties". I watch my game without having to tell some know-it-all to stfu. The only, possibly, better way to watch a game, IMHO, is in a luxury box.

They're getting better, but $200 is a steep price to pay for me to catch the (on average) four games a year I would need to use this service for.

Out here on the left coast we have no other alternative. I'm right there with you 44.

I'm sure you could find a bar to watch the games cheaper.

You don't have to buy $20 worth of food each time.

Not into the bar scene anymore. Used to go to a certain casino every Sunday in downtown Reno. Call me lazy I'd rather hang out with small group of close family/friends at home. I really don't even like to watch at someone else's home. It's a matter of preference. I don't mind paying for those privileges.

Direct TV and ATT together means that eventually its going to be a Uverse package for a good price point. And I don't go to many places where you can sit there for just 20 bucks for 3 hours unless 10 of that is tip.

Realistically you are spending 30 bucks each for 12 non prime time games. 360 bucks plus a tank of gas (50) is the investment 410. So you can spend twice as much or just get the ticket.

I'm hoping, praying and grunting you're right Veritas Steel. I dropped DTV just this year after being with them for ever and am currently with Uverse. Purely Fortuitous Coincidence that we chose Uverse over someone like comcast or any of those other providers. Wifey isn't very thrilled though.

I only need it for four games tops every season. $200 is too much for that.

Google has made a play at the exclusivity contract.

I figure I save $30 or so by not going to the bar, plus I have a better view and sound at home (not to mention following the game thread).

For me it's more like 6-8 games I miss, so the price isn't bad. But I have little interest if I can't watch it on my big screen...but the free online feeds are really frustrating.

We definitely have to watch all the games. Missing one induces a form of football related PTSD.
Going to the local water hole always costs us $50 plus since a dozen wings are $8 and beers are $3-4. Times two folks plus tip and there you are. Plus I've got to get there early to make sure I get a TV with sound. Then I have to listen to the Clown fans screaming like they won the Superbowl when they get a touchdown. Plus driving home watching everywhere for our cities finest.
I willingly pay for the ticket, make food the proper way, drink beer I want at a third the price, watch the game with folks I want and start the game a half hour later to completely eliminate the 500 commercials. I can stop it when I want to piss and not miss anything and I can rewind as many times as it takes to prove we got screwed again!
I'll do two bills for that.

Not sure about real cheap. Maybe 30% discount. And what could be interesting is if Google turns around and licenses it to cable companies - then it might actually cost more, but you don't have to pay for fucking DirectTv.

I would love the ability to purchase individual games on pay per view, with the ability to choose which or how many to pay for and watch on a weekly basis. I have to see the Steelers, but some weekends, that's all the NFL I have time for or care to watch. If I had Ticket, I would feel compelled to watch more to justify the cost.

I know it is probably a ways off, but that's what would get me to bite.

Do you think DirecTV 's online streaming prevents you from hooking your tablet up via HDMI and viewing it on the big screen?

I know some streaming services do.

I have no idea. I have an older receiver for my home theater and doing something like that wouldn't give me sound. I could hook directly to my tv and just turn the surround off (and use the tv speakers) but that defeats the purpose of a home theater.

I'm in. I'm perfectly willing to pay to see the games I want to see, without having to deal with fans of other teams encroaching on my game day experience. I no longer have cable so this is going to be the only way I can see games.

I gain great pleasure in doing this also!

I want this too, but for years have tried to figure out how the economics would work.

This essentially cannibalizes what's being shown on the networks. They pay ridiculous sums for broadcast rights. I'm not sure revenues from PPV would ever match these broadcast fees.

I don't think the network TV deals would suffer that much. As has been pointed out in this thread, for all but four or so games a year, I (and most fans living in a reasonable area from their home teams) would be watching the regular network games for my Steelers fix. Their ratings would remain largely unchanged, for the most part, as well as their ad revenue and the NFL cut of it.

The revenue generated by Sunday Ticket would change, becoming less easy to calculate, but I think that more people buying individual games would even out with those generated by less people currently buying all of them. But what do I know? I just don't want to have to be stuck paying for the Buccaneers vs the Vikings (or games of that ilk and interest level) 50 times a season in order to see my Steelers three or four times.

If the data gained from individuals purchasing individual games caused the NFL and networks to put more desirable non Steeler games on in other slots when they got the chance, I might even watch more non Steeler games, as I suspect others might, as well.

Just for reference, I ran HDMI from my laptop to a 60" TV last year and it streamed fine.

That settles the laptop issue. I was wondering about tablets.

I have Xfinity to Go on my iPad.

I can watch streaming content on the iPad just fine...if I hook my iPad via HDMI to my TV, I get a warning that I can only watch the content on my iPad.

I had never experienced that before, and was wondering whether other streaming apps did that.

(PS I got around that because my new TV is a Samsung has screen mirroring- I can mirror what is streaming on my Galaxy S4 onto the TV. Unfortunately, with streaming video, there is much lag and it sometimes fails...they haven't quite perfected that yet).

A lot of apps do this, particularly the premium cable apps (e.g. showtime, HBO)...or at least they used to, to prevent people from just using that instead of buying HBO on cable.

I suspect that you won't be able to sling Sunday Ticket from iPad to TV because everyone would do that instead of stepping up to the $239 subscription that includes video game consoles and other devices that you do have hooked up to your TV.

Also, I've had Sunday Ticket on iPad the past few years (mooching off of my Dad's Sunday Ticket Max subscription), and it does not allow airplay video to the TV -- only audio.

I can understand that. I doesn't really make sense for the Xfinity to Go app to limit my viewing like that, though, because any content that comes to channels I don't subscribe to is blocked in the app (i.e. I can't even stream them on my iPad).

It seems silly for Xfinity to block me from watching this content by hooking my iPad to the TV.

Although now that I think about it, maybe it has something to to with their new "Xfinity X1" which is their new app for controlling my content on "all my screens". I haven't researched exactly what that is, but maybe it is something that offers me the flexibility to view streaming content on my TV, and it DOES cost extra money.

Same here. We only get about 4 national broadcast so Sunday Ticket is a must have.

NOT spending every Sunday in a sports bar as I'd spend way more money going that route. Plus, it's hard to beat waking up, flopping on the coach and putting the game on.

10:00 am most weeks out here.
Jibba Jabber’s offense hasn’t scored more than 7 1st quarter points in 88 consecutive games. An NFL record by far. A historic amount of “easin in”. We are lucky to have him.

Well I'm glad you guys all have alternatives now.

I'm not interested in this at the price they are offering.

Hell ya to that. 10am kickoffs are a pain in the ass to go to a sports bar for.
