Looks like Martin signed his contract #2 in 2019 for 3 years and $33 million with a $5 million signing bonus.

Gonna be tuff to find a center in the draft to start day 1.
More likely we draft an OT in one of first 2 rounds....
Maybe center, rounds 3 thru 5?

Anyone watch Martin the last few years?
He worth a look?
Will he be a cheaper vet Center to fill a hole until a draft pick is ready?

Will this gut command a similar contract he signed in 2019?

Or
$3 years, $10 -$14 million ?

Don’t really know a lot other than he played at Norte Dame and is (Cowboy) Zack Martins brother.
That would be a large pay cut...depends on interest, obviously.
I would think that if the Steelers have interest...at 27, and 62 starts under his belt, he would be slotted in for the next 4-5 seasons. Thus no real need to draft a center.

Realistically, someone is going to offer this guy far more than the Steelers could dream of.

I think the Steelers should be very, very careful this offseason in only signing potential free agents THAT DO NOT negatively offset our impending free agents.

JuJu, Bud Dupree, Mike Hilton, those could be very big contracts and that could potentially garner us two 3rds and a 5th, or a 3rd, 4th and 5th, etc, you get the picture. Say the Steelers do draft that QB of the future, it is going to take some extra draft capital to do it.

Much easier to say give up that 1st, 2nd and 3rd round pick in a year to trade up into the top 5-10, if you have two 3rd round comp picks and an extra 5th to still fall back on.

So, yes to signing players that are cut, but no to signing true free agents that would aversely affect the comp formula.

Let’s face it Scunge..,the Steelers are an organization that always believes that they are a contender, despite what us fanboys think. They are going to make moves to improve the team in that regard. They don’t give two shits about comp picks.

We will sit back when the first round of FAs get plucked up with huge contracts, and then we will come in and get a few. Probably OC/OT/RB unless someone’s coming back.

I agree they should not do to much to blow the expectation for the potential comps. But think our C will come via Fa.

Good thoughts as usual Scunge.

If we lose both Bud and JuJu, I think its a good chance we get a 3rd round comp for both. Good chance Hilton can garner a 5th.

Looking at the comp picks over the last 5 year, the NFL has awarded an average of ( 7 ) third round comp picks, ( 6 ) fourth rounders and ( 5 ) fifth rounders. Its not as simple as 7,6, 5 comp picks, as the 2020 draft had ( 10 ) 3rd round comp picks, and 2018 had only ( 4 )....but the average over last 5 years has been ( 7 ) .

The NFL has awarded ( 36 ) 3rd round comp picks over the last 5 years, where as in the preceding 5 year period between, 2011 thru 2015, the NFL only awarded a total of only ( 12 ) 3rd round comp picks. I'll assume with NFL free agency and players switching teams more so in the last 5 years, than the preceding 5 years, that more high round draft pick compensation has been awarded.

With the reduction in the Cap, there may be a record number of FA movement and a resulting high number of 3rd, 4th and 5th round comp picks?

We have the 24th pick this year in to 2021 draft.

Assume the Steelers finish in the same spot this year and have pick 24 in the 2022 draft, with the ( 2 ) 3rd round comp pick, and ( 1 ) 5th rounder, its possible to have the following draft picks in 2022....and assuming the average comp picks being awarded ( 7 ) 3rds, ( 6 ) 4ths and ( 5 ) 5ths.

1. 24
2. 56
3. 88
3. 101 ( say they get the 5th of the 7, 3rd round comp picks )
3. 102 ( say they get the 6th of the 7, 3rd round comp picks )
4. 127
5. 165
5. 178

We also need to keep the following in mind........
Classic.

A lot of “Steelers sites” are pushing hard for Beacham.

Beachum is the only one on that list Id remotely consider.......but 32 is ancient.....especially playing in the Steelers caveman offensive line scheme

I think that Beachum would be a vet backup for both Tackle spots and not a starter. I have no problem with that scenario for a year or two. That gives you a year to look at Banner and Chuks again plus if you draft a OT early it allows him to learn before being thrust into the lineup.

I am unsure about the rules but if a free agent is signed later after some initial signing period - does a comp pick still get deducted?

You are correct that at some point FAs don't count towards the compensatory pick calculation. However, it is quite late in the FA process, I believe it is somewhere close to the date of the draft.

This gives you a boat load of info on the comp pick info if you really want to nerd out on it.

I'd prefer they cut stone hands and add two TEs. Clear out the RBs and TEs. Start from scratch. Could easily improve both groups without breaking the bank.
Howard Griffith had to resort to chop-blocking him during the 1997 AFC Championship Game. An incredulous Kirkland asked Griffith, “Why do you have to use cheap tactics like chop-blocking?” Griffith replied “Why do you have to be a 300-pound linebacker?”

I’d be all for this, but we all know that’s not how the Steelers roll.
What to expect...
TE- Bring in some JAG FA to fill MacDonalds role...or (most likely) go with Gentry alongside EE.
RB- Keep the band together. I don’t expect Conner to garner the interest some think and Steelers will swoop in to save the day. We all know how they love them a home grown, feel good story.

Thomas Morstead P

cut by the Saints. Guy has a hammer. I know kicking in a dome for at least 10 games plus Carolina and Tampa Bay makes life easier on kickers/punters/QB's.

With the state of the TE and OC groups in the draft, that's where FA money should probably go. Get a young bell cow RB in the draft. That band stopped playing anything resembling music a long time ago.

I don’t disagree Ice, but once again, I’m 100% certain the Steelers view their roster a lot differently than we view their roster.

I can only hope that some of the comments on the running game had to do with personnel as well as Randy the Rustbelt Scapegoat. If their pro scouting department is capable of not drowning in their own drool, they have to be able to see that RB room is the worst in the league. Add in that Tomlin needs a bell cow like Linus needs his blanket, and I have some hope change will come there, at least.

LOL..the drool comment is classic!
When my wife can see that the RB's were not up to par during the season, there is real trouble afoot. She is much more interested in the colour of the uniform and whether the field looks pretty. Her interest in football trends toward the aesthetic!

But she did come out with "Isn't Conner the only actual NFL proven back you have??" early in the year and I was taken aback. She was unfortunately correct and that problem festered throughout the year.

OK I need to rest..lol..I want to fix this Oline and RB situation with my bare hands!!! Can't wait for this draft..cannot!
