They’ll keep Mitch but will they ask him to restructure his contract?
That’s a ton of wasted cap space for a backup QB.
Translation: "even an R7 will do....". But, honestly, not sure what you expect him to say. Let's see what they do, which is what really matters.
Also, there's something to be said for honoring contracts, especially the short deals with vets.
It's also possible they'll give Trubisky permission to explore trades. Maybe if no one wants him a reasonable back-up deal can be agreed upon. And, remember, this is a team that would fall over themselves to keep Trubisky if he meant the difference between 9-8 and 8-9.

I wouldn't go over average back up pay for Mitch. Even that might be a bit to much. I was really rooting for him to take advantage of an opportunity the beginning of last season. However, even with the Steelers multitude of problems, he is who I thought he was. I was delusional last year. That nightmare was real in Chicago. A change of venue did no good. His head is just as screwed up as it appeared while watching Bears games. He just isn't a starting QB. As a back up? Flip a coin, I wouldn't feel bad either way.

Ya this. They likely want to trade him. Just can’t come out and say so.Kodiak. wrote: ↑Tue Feb 28, 2023 11:36 pmTranslation: "even an R7 will do....". But, honestly, not sure what you expect him to say. Let's see what they do, which is what really matters.

At the end of the day, paying a premium for a back-up for a single year is t the end of the world.
Last year they spent all of camp on a faux “QB Battle” where two of the guys were learning the offesne while the one who knew it the best wasn’t really given a shot.
If Mitch does end up back this year the team doesn’t need to waste any ti e really getting him up to speed to start. He’s the back-up and will get back/up reps.
The rocket scientist can be brought in as number three.
The team should be able to hit the ground running.
I’d prefer that mo ey be used elsewhere but I can see the benefits of keeping him.
Jibba Jabber’s offense hasn’t scored more than 7 1st quarter points in 88 consecutive games. An NFL record by far. A historic amount of “easin in”. We are lucky to have him.

It should help achieve the standard of mediocrity, which is the ultimate seasonal goal.
Stability over progression.
Steelers way.

I was listening to the fan this morning and they made some interesting points around Mitch. They think that the Steelers like to keep a veteran backup behind their young QB (a la Ben with Maddox, Leftwich and Batch). Also, if you cut Mitch, they still have to sign another backup unless they want to go into next year with KP and a rookie. Veteran backups cost ~$4-6 million. So, and don't rely on my numbers, cutting Mitch saves ~$8 million with $2 million dead money. On top of the $6 million for another vet backup, they only save $2 million. Based on those numbers, if Mitch is willing to settle into a backup role, it makes sense to extend him and spread his cap hit.
Not sure I agree but it is interesting to think about.

We will do what we always do. We will let his agent see what is out there. When he realizes there is a very little market, we will extend him for 3 years with a signing bonus to absorb most of this years hit. If he moves on, we will sign Mason after he sees that there is a very little market for him.

Don’t underestimate the great things Mason has done with the black and gold

Well, we are talking bout the back-up QB here.Stillchest wrote: ↑Wed Mar 01, 2023 7:43 pmCool.955876 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 01, 2023 4:33 pmYa this. They likely want to trade him. My point was that the more reps KP gets in camp the better.
A new back-up would need more work.

I just did a search for Cole Kelley wondering what became of him. I was hoping we'd bring him in when he was coming out instead of the guy we drafted in the 7th (can't remember his name). He's in the USFL with the Memphis Showboats. I'll have to watch if he wins the starting job. Would love to see the Wranglers come back. That's the last pro team I cheered for here. Damn that was a long time ago!
Howard Griffith had to resort to chop-blocking him during the 1997 AFC Championship Game. An incredulous Kirkland asked Griffith, “Why do you have to use cheap tactics like chop-blocking?” Griffith replied “Why do you have to be a 300-pound linebacker?”
