After the books closed on the Thursday night prime time game, there was a lot to sift through. Schein seemed to echo a lot of restless Steelers fans by asking for a definition of Tomlin’s “standard.” The team may have won on the field, but it took all 60 minutes of the game to beat an inferior opponent. Of course, Tomlin has coined the phrase, “The Standard is the Standard,” but no one seems to know what exactly that “standard” is. According to Schein, that standard is something fans should expect to see come January.
“I think they’re going to make the playoffs and I think they get bounced early,” he said. “Mike Tomlin always says, ‘the standard is the standard.’ What is the standard? Is it just making the playoffs and being bounced in the first round? Is that the new normal in Pittsburgh? Print the tee shirts, ‘Tomlin goes over .500 again.’ Is that considered a success? I keep looking for reasons to fall in love with the Steelers… but I don’t know any Steelers fan that watched that game [on Thursday night] that feels great about anything other than the final score.”
Across the entire Steelers fan base, one of the common denominators within the angst of the group is the lack of playoff success in the last decade. Sure, Tomlin can avoid a losing record, but that doesn’t hold much weight without a win in the playoffs. But with that said, Tomlin is simply reverting back to the blueprint that was already set for him in his early Super Bowl success.
“Kenny Pickett and the Steelers are certainly at their best when their backs are against the wall,” Schein said. “But even though they came back, and even though Pickett has a knack, I mean, what Steelers fan feels good today? I don’t think anybody feels good, I mean, you take a look at the Steelers’ play on offense and Pickett missed more passes than he hit, and Matt Canada came down from the booth and called the plays, but there was still issues, and Pickett threw for under 200 yards, and he missed a wide open [George] Pickens on numerous occasions, the defense bailed them out, no question about it.”

Not new here but if the national media starts beating the drum, maybe it will get the Rooneys to take notice. Shame them into some change if nothing else. No one likes to be laughed at.

Many characters at this site but one thing is for sure, all of the longtime posters are diehard Steelers fans and tend to have a pretty good pulse of what this team is “putting on tape”.
Took some longer than others but most have come to recognize Jibbs is a fraud.
Still a few remaining ball washers but I view them as masturbatory fan boys who’ll jerk off to anyone that dons the Black & Gold.

The standard is actually NFL purgatory, being good enough to sometimes make the playoffs, never advance far, and never sink far enough for a good draft rebuild.

I agree. Good observation.
So, as much, as I root for the players, is it doing this team any favors long term, just squeaking by, maybe going 8/9, 9-8 perennially, but never any further, and should they earn a WC berth, getting pummeled and being one N done?
It’s total Hell being a Steelers fan.

Not winning a playoff game.

The standard is something you are always striving towards the achievement of, and so forth, if you will. A constant striving to success and a component of winning that elevates the best in each of us. It humbles us to be given this opportunity to be able to do the strive and play this game that we all adore and love. If you will.

Not winning a playoff game while continuing to absolve the HC of all blame.
Finished it for you.
Some fans just want to wave pom poms no matter the results.
This team creates it’s own adversity time and time again.

Not "winning a playoff game" is frustrating for sure, but being in contention for 16 years is pretty good.

I wouldn't blame A2 if he extends Tomlin's contract. It probably makes good business sense.

Close to 50% of teams in the league make the playoffs. Many that don’t are in contention to the end.
It isn’t some amazing accomplishment.
Didn’t a team with a losing record squeeze into the playoffs recently?
You are young. I get it. These guys are your heros.

This is what AR2 wants. Cowher had ups and downs but you needs the downs to put talent on the teams. Steelers are spending at the cap so they are not "cheap". THey just do not have the talent in the right places (OC, QB)

Typical national media where Jibbs gets praised to the high heavens for any success the team has is while at the same time absolving him for any of the teams woes.
Look at the great Mike Tomlin squeezing wins out of that shitty team and shitty offense.
Ummmm this team has a shitty offense because of Mike Tomlin.
He isn’t a some poor victim overcoming mountainous circumstance.
He is the cause of those circumstances.
Oh well. Maybe the lil Kenny that could might someday actually look like a 1st round QB instead of a meddling journeyman back-up and be able to overcome an offense that wants to go no faster than a horse drawn wagon in a league of Ferraris

Devaluing the offensive line and thinking you can just fill it with also-rans. You can cover up a lot of warts if you're strong in the trenches.
If the organization is dead set on Pickett then we really need to beef up that line. He's already skittish in the pocket and we will need a legitimate running game.

Remember when Jibbs was asked about this very thing and his response was “there is more than one way to skin a cat”?
In other words, we can make do with lower tier oline if the skill positions excel. And yet, he’s failed on both fronts. Turns out it wasn’t a good idea to take a 3rd round reach at OG and start him at C.
Either that or he was referring to the time he was watching cat videos with Devin Bush and his uncle.
And what kind of sick fuck skins a cat anyways?

Not sure I would agree the Steelers have devalued the offensive line
They put a rd 1 pick there just last draft and seem pretty likely to put another 1st or 2nd this draft

Ummm putting a first rounder there THIS year doesn’t change the fact they’ll been putting jags there the last several years.
So they did in fact devalue the oline. That changed THIS YEAR when they finally added a high pick there.
As to your second point, I’d say objection your honor. Calls for speculation.
They aren’t double dipping the oline in rounds 1 and 2 this year.
Guaranteed
I’ll wager anything you want on that.

Between 2012 (David Decastro) and 2023 (Broderick Jones) the highest oline that was taken over that TEN YEAR SPAN was Kendrick Green and Chuks Okorafor.
Both 3rd rounders. And both below the line JAGs.
Shit, there were a few years over that decade they didn’t even take oline.
For someone who pretends to be sooo smart it sure is easy to blow your dumb opinions out of the water.
Fish in a barrel.

You got me there. My old eyes thought it was and instead of or.
Plus I read fast and this isn’t exactly prepping the the bar exam. So not hanging on every word. Duh.
You win that one. If you wanna call it that.
Now read my next post blowing your idiotic comment that the Steelers haven’t devalued the oline out of the water.
You lose that one. Badly.
Real real bad.
Or tell me how the team didn’t devalue the oline when the highest draft capital they spent in a decade was a couple of 3rd rounders.
And one they even started at a position he never played in their aging and slow footed QBs last year.
I dunno. Sounds like devaluation to me.
Oh wait, did Kendrick Green have “outlier” talent?
