O Line

Post by tango_mike » Sun Dec 17, 2023 10:54 pm

Next year, this O Line must ONCE AGAIN be remade.

The ONLY player I bring back is Jones…..and MAYBE Seamalu as a swing.

Chuks…..gone
Moore…..gone
Cole……..gone
Daniels…..gone.

These Guys are USELESS. TERRIBLE. GARBAGE

Draft an OT in the 1st and a C in the 2nd.
Add free agents to play both guard positions.

The O line is the biggest problem on this team. They CANNOT run the ball, and they CANNOT PASS PROTECT! The QB is constantly running for his life! It kills the offense. Quit throwing money at scrap heap garbage and expecting an NFL quality offensive line. These scrubs are just offensive.

If only they had started to do that the year they drafted Pickett @ #20…which is what I and many others wanted. Build the Oline - let Mason suck for a year or two while looking for a true QB. But noooo draft a middling older QB and sign a former first round bust. Perfect

But yeah Oline and Dline need to be build asap

This offseason has the potential to be nuts.

*I think we have to have a new center in Pittsburgh next year. Cole has been a liability and very visible weak link all season. I think center will be a top 100 pick.

*Chuks will most assuredly get cut, right? One year left on his deal, will save close to $9M+ on the cap (although also creating $3M in dead money), got benched in the middle of the year (for reasons that appear to be more of an excuse to get Broderick Jones on the field, but whatever).

*So that leaves Dan Moore Jr. and Broderick Jones returning. Dan Moore Jr. has 1 year left on his deal and I don't see him getting a C2 unless he hates money, hates starting, or both. Dan Moore Jr. cannot play RT. They traded up in the first to have Broderick Jones be the next LT. What do they do?

Option 1. Draft a tackle high, move Broderick to LT, the rookie tackle to RT, and Dan Moore Jr. becomes your backup/swing tackle. This seems the more likely option.

Option 2. Leave Dan Moore Jr. at LT, Broderick at RT, draft a tackle on day 3 of the draft that you hope can develop into a starter in 2024 when Moore is gone.

Option 3. Forfeit every game, finish 0-17 (could be interesting).

But then what do we do about that pesky QB situation? The never-ending ILB issue? Safety outside of Minkah? CB outside of JPJ? WR? RB beyond Jaylen Warren if Najee doesn't get the fifth year picked up? DL with Cam nearing the end? So, so many holes, and no real serious cap space. Do they trade for Justin Fields or a vet QB? Does Pickens want out? DJ has one year left in his deal, what do they do there?

Omar Kahn and Andy Weidl have their work cut out for them.

I’ll have more to say about this later but I hope they keep Jones at RT. He has been dominant there. Bad teams have tons of holes. Don’t create more hoping to fix one somewhere else.

If they were close I’d understand the value shift LT/RT wise.

They aren't just going to "blow it up". Cutting all these guys just creates other needs, and they're track record recently on FAs hasn't been all that great.

I could see maybe drafting a C fairly early, But they probably will see what a new OL coach can do with the rest before going on a cutting spree. OL is really about coaching - until you get that right, you can't fix it just with the draft and FA.

Same reason they probably won't trade DJ or Pickens, because they have basically nothing behind them. Obviously WR is a pretty big draft need flying under the radar.

Teams rarely are more than 1-2 good offseasons away from contending. There's a relatively decent core of talent on this roster that, along with coaching up some others, is probably only a few players away (not counting QB).

That said, a new HC and entire new coaching staff is going to throw all that into some chaos as some of the decent core I mentioned may not fit what the new coaches want to do.

I am not overly impressed with the Dline, the ILB'ers (even healthy) or the secondary beyong JPJ and Minkah. There are blank spots everywhere..meh is everywhere! LOL..But yeah, after some promising starts the Oline is revealing themselves to be subpar. Having only ONE player who everybody seems to like is not ideal.

They will be drafting pretty high for a few years, IMO. This looks like a massive rebuild including coaching staff will be needed. If you can find a franchise QB and draft well by position (I like Weidl and Khan)..it might not take as long as expected. I'm amazed at how good Houston is already after many were consigning them to years of purgatory, for instance. But a change at the top is necessary. I can't be optimistic about that since we know how the org. operates.

I'm on the OT, C 1st and 2nd train. This also makes it even more important to trade Tomlin for a 1st. Sooo many teams are going to have HC openings. Just need to find one dumb enough.
Howard Griffith had to resort to chop-blocking him during the 1997 AFC Championship Game. An incredulous Kirkland asked Griffith, “Why do you have to use cheap tactics like chop-blocking?” Griffith replied “Why do you have to be a 300-pound linebacker?”

Online is maddening.

All the money thrown at the Oline position and they can’t stop a bubble on a light breeze…

Playing armchair GM I move Broderick Jones back to his natural position. LT.

I take Darnell Washington and develop him at RT. He is already treated like OL just make the move already and start the process. I believe he would be one of the most athletic RT’s in the league.

The interior Oline is the true trainwreck. Seumalo has disappointed from get go IMO, I believe he too is playing out of position. He should be playing RG.

Moore to me is garbage at either tackle spot [worse at RT] but if there is a chance he could slide inside to LG then one less position of need. If Moore blows look at bringing in a stopgap Vet LG or draft one.

That [on paper] would leave OC. Draft your franchise Center and move on.

Nate Herbig swing OG, Dylan Cook swing OT with Spencer Anderson Oline Swiss Army knife.
