I’d love to see Mahomes going against the great Steelers defense of the 1970’s he would of got busted in the mouth no way he runs around like that in a Super Bowl and beats the Steelers. Ask Roger Staubach and Fran Tarkenton how that went? Both were better runners than Mahomes.
Man i miss that team!

It's impossible to compare eras.
My immediate response to this would be: yea Jack Lambert and Co might lay some hits on PH, but you wouldn't be able to catch him to do so.
This was the same thing said about Wayne Gretzky: "Just hit him, he's so tiny". But he was so slippery, no one could line him up for a big hit.

Today's NFL for QBs is like today's NBA for scorers.
Defense in today's NBA consists of 5 orange traffic cones with movement.
It is SO MUCH EASIER to play QB in today's era than past eras.

While Lambert is a God to me, Mahomes is no pussy.
I've seen the guy take plenty of epic shots and he gets up and keeps fucking playing.
Mahomes is one tough sonofabitch. I hate the guy, but he's on his way to being the greatest of all time.

Love Lambert (part of my screen name) but defenses aren’t allowed to play that way anymore.
The Steel Curtain defense would get penalized into oblivion if they were out there trying to smash QBs.
So while it’s a nice thought, that ship has sailed and so t never coming back.

Also Mahomes is a lot quicker than Staubach or Tarkenton.
Still I like Lambert with piss and vinegar.
The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently.

I wouldn't have mattered. Defensive resistance was dramatically stronger in that era and offensive play reflected it.
Mahomes wouldn't have slid and with the seas parting. Lots of guys in that era would have been frustrated with getting beat and would have been looking to hurt him when they got the chance and it would have happened.
Even if the Steelers didn't catch him (they didn't catch Tarkenton in the SB) running around like a chicken with your head cut off the entire game affects offensive output... even for Mahomes.
It's not as if Mahomes never gets hit in today's league. The brutality of the hits every QB received in that era... no comparison.

Excuse me, did you just suggest laying a big hit on Wayne Gretzky? Dave Semenko and Marty McSorley will be dropping by to have a chat with you.

Mahomes would be crying like the little bitch that he is.
There is no way in hell the little douche would do anything but machine gun a bunch of picks under the real NFL rules of yesteryear.

And it's not only the DRAMATICALLY increased resistance directly on the QB...
It's also the increased defensive resistance for the receivers. You had better have your head on a swivel going over the middle lest you lose it. Of course, there was also the pre-Blount rule change era when it was even worse for receivers (and QBs who threw to them)
Affect the QBs throwing target, affect the QB.

Spot on, KC.
As a Steelers fan living in Kansas City, I have had a closeup view of the Chiefs and Mahomes. I hate it, but I respect the hell out of him, his ability and his character on and off the field.

He went up against the best the NFL has to offer last night, took at least one nasty hit, came from behind, and won in OT with a clutch play.
Pretty damned impressive.
It's an interesting thought experiment, the 70s D against the Chiefs O. It would be a stalemate, imo. KC would get their shots in, Steelers D would have their wideouts covered. SF did a great job of that.
Mahomes was the difference maker.
"I'm institutionalized, man," he joked. "I gotta have it. I just love the challenges week in and week out that this job provides: the growth in it, the collective growth, the individual growth."

That too
But if I'm a goon myself, I'll take my beating if it means that I've hurt/ eliminated Gretzky for a game or 2

Jack Lambert on X...LMAO...he's probably chopping wood somewhere.
That said, it does bring up an interesting point. One of the reasons Mahomes is so slippery is because defenders are afraid to take clean shots on him. Imagine a D that played freely and not having to worry about countless personal fouls? It would be a much more violent game for sure and KC's offense would suffer.
In the end, it doesn't matter. We can't just cling to nostalgia. We have to be forward thinking and adapt. Violent Ds and power running games don't cut it anymore.
I'm going to repeat my mantra which I've had every offseason for the last 7 years.
WE HAVE TO DRAFT FOR SPEED.

Increased defensive resistance reduces offensive output.
Decreased defensive resistance increases offensive output.
Team speed on offense is even more important when you have a conservative head coach.

Absolutely positively not true. Tarkenton and Staubach would run rings around Mahomes. For God sakes, Ben ran a faster time than Mahomes. that defense would destroy him.

Just like in society, personal accountability is almost completely gone. It's always the other guy's responsibility. Can't block him if he's not looking even if that allows him to make the tackle. Can only softly lower him to the ground when tackling. Have to let him catch the ball, come down and brace before softly lowering him to the ground. And on and on...
Howard Griffith had to resort to chop-blocking him during the 1997 AFC Championship Game. An incredulous Kirkland asked Griffith, “Why do you have to use cheap tactics like chop-blocking?” Griffith replied “Why do you have to be a 300-pound linebacker?”

That doesn't sound like the Jack Lambert I remember. Sounds like a yinzer fan, no problem with that, but I do have to believe Jack isn't on Twitter or any social media. I'd be surprised, that is sure.
