Sept 22 LA Chargers game
Sept 22 LA Chargers game
We are going back to Pittsburgh for the home opener for my 2nd Steeler game after being a Steeler fan as long as I can remember. My first last year vs. Jacksonville was a shitty game & an amazing experience. This year with the revamped team & the excitement of the first home game - I am looking at an amazing time in a wonderful city. This time we are looking at an airbnb that would be close to the train to the game & wonder if someone could assist me in choosing a place to stay. Is Highland Park or Bloomfield/Shadyside accessible to the train to the game ? We saw some nice airbnb's there. Which areas are safe & close to the train to the game or possibly another way of getting to the game - not driving. Last year I booked an airbnb & was then warned not to stay in that area & cancelled it. Thank you. You were all so helpful. We ended up staying at a downtown hotel which was was close to the train but the room was boxy & small & booking so close to the game pretty expensive. Any suggestions for areas for airbnb's or hotels to which to stay would be much appreciated. Perhaps, we can meet some of my longtime Stillers/Steelerfury friends as well - it's been a lot of years

All mentioned are decent areas, Blu. I went in with my 2 adult kids for a game last year, stayed at a decent Airbnb in the Mexican war streets on the north side, walked to the stadium on game day. Parked my car on Friday night, didn’t move it til Monday morning

PM'd you Blu. I agree with Swiss. Areas mentioned all better than Hazelwood.
City should be lively for the home opener this year. Hopefully the game will go great. Always a great atmosphere during & after a win. No one can guarantee the outcome, but not even close for a loss & even worse after an ass kicking. Post game almost better than pre game, after a win. Hope this one works out and is a great time for yinz.

This has been a number of years now, but I used to get good deals at hotels on Priceline naming a really low price. For the 2008 season AFC Championship Game against the Ravens we got to stay with the team in the Pittsburgh Hilton. Tomlin borrowed my daughter’s shoulder to autograph her Terrible Towel, and got to meet Dermotti Dawson. And Deshea Townsend was quite the practical joker.
I like being Dahntahn, it’s walkable and you can go to Primantis and the museums. You can walk over the Clemente Bridge to the game, or take a ferry.

Thanks, I messaged back.Steelersfan wrote: ↑Sun Jun 09, 2024 10:25 pmPM'd you Blu. I agree with Swiss. Areas mentioned all better than Hazelwood.

All of these areas are great, but the T doesn't go out in that direction. Having said that, taking an Uber to/from the Steel Plaza station (closest stop to PPG Paints Arena) might be a good bet.
The Southside might be another place to look for an Airbnb. Station Square or First Avenue Station are walkable, depending on where you are.
I'm sure you'll be paying out the ass for anything on the North Shore, so I won't even bother suggesting it

Thanks, I appreciate the solid advice. I am so looking forward to going back to Pittsburgh & seeing the Steelers again. It's an easy 5 hour drive. This time we'll spend more time tailgating in the lot. Perhaps, I'll meet some of you.Pabst wrote: ↑Mon Jun 10, 2024 3:02 pmAll of these areas are great, but the T doesn't go out in that direction. Awesome Blu. Hope you have a great time. My buddy and I will be staying in Grove City (most likely) Saturday and driving into the burgh early Sunday for the game.
The lesson here is to keep checking Airbnb (or Vrbo) because deals will pop up all the time.swissvale72 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 10, 2024 8:00 pmI paid about $200 a night for a pretty nice 2 bedroom air bnb on the Mexican war streets on a steeler weekend last yearPabst wrote: ↑Mon Jun 10, 2024 3:02 pmAll of these areas are great, but the T doesn't go out in that direction. I stayed at the Residence Inn next to PNC Park last month and it was somewhere around $150/night. Just checked for the weekend of 9/22 and rates are starting at $420.

This is the bs they’ve been doing for a cpl years now. Price hikes for games. Saturday prices are absolutely ridiculous, Sundays are higher too just not as high as Saturdays.Pabst wrote: ↑Tue Jun 11, 2024 3:49 pmThe lesson here is to keep checking Airbnb (or Vrbo) because deals will pop up all the time.swissvale72 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 10, 2024 8:00 pmI paid about $200 a night for a pretty nice 2 bedroom air bnb on the Mexican war streets on a steeler weekend last yearPabst wrote: ↑Mon Jun 10, 2024 3:02 pm

Would staying in Dormont at a Airbnb on Philadelphia Avenue make sense? It's supposed to be a half mile to the T. We could walk to the T or could we park at the T stop which would take us to the game? We'll probably make a reservation downtown at Con Alma for dinner & jazz Saturday night.
I actually don't know much about Dormont, but I stayed in Green Tree for the Frozen Four ~10 years ago and it was fine.blu wrote: ↑Mon Jun 17, 2024 8:33 pmWould staying in Dormont at a Airbnb on Philadelphia Avenue make sense? I'll also say that when I lived in Pittsburgh I remember Scott Township, Mt Lebo, and Carnegie all being quite nice. Granted, it's been > 20 years so things may have changed (Looking at google maps, I doubt it).
That being said, here's everything you need to know about the T: https://www.rideprt.org/pdfs/RED.pdf
Looks like Con Alma is 2 blocks from the Wood St station (which should be open by then) and the Red Line runs til 1:00 AM on Saturday, so you're probably good to go.
If you've been a Steeler fan for 30 years and this is only your 2nd home game, my advice is not to cheap out. Book a hotel downtown and enjoy the atmosphere. Walk across the bridge to the game. Or you could save a couple hundred bucks to stay in the middle of nowhere neighborhood.
If you cut down from 1 pack of Pall Malls/day to 2 packs a week from now until Gameday you'd be good to go.

i quit smoking ages ago but I agree with you but after staying in a downtown hotel last year for the Jacksonville game, my partner wanted a bigger space than a hotel room & she found a nice Airbnb that's an easy drive or a longer walk to the T. This time we'll stay for some fun with the tailgaters after the game unlike last year when we rushed out to the T a few minutes early with Pickett down & Trubisky passing to the Jaguars.R_S wrote: ↑Tue Jun 18, 2024 5:24 pmIf you've been a Steeler fan for 30 years and this is only your 2nd home game, my advice is not to cheap out. How much room does he need to sleep and shower
I agree but it's a she & a bit fussy. Her father was a football player having been on the Cardinals when they were in Chicago & afterwards was a superstar for the Toronto Argonauts when the CFL had some other NFL-quality players. A long time ago.
