Fields and Red Zone

Post by LakecrestSteeler » Tue Oct 15, 2024 2:15 pm

I know our passing game and offense is suspect, due mainly to Fields' passing prowess to this point and the dinosaur philosophy. But he is still above average in QB skills.

If the name of the game as some say is to create mismatches with units @SteelerDayTrader, our Red Zone offense should be unstoppable.

Perhaps we are seeing the start of this? With these rushing TDs from Fields which will continue unless they go to a spy or super disciplined Edge, it will provide opportunities for others. His speed to the corner can't be matched by most teams. Even if they can, they must be perfect angles. If Fields can execute 2-3 passes blindfolded (due to practice and drills), we should have an unstoppable red zone offense.

Split the field in two in the RZ and we should have one side with 5 and one side with 6. Put a man in motion to drag that 6th guy out and you can get it to at least 5.5 to 5.5 players on paper, and maybe even get to work on 5 players depending on the defense.

Justin Fields definitely requires 2 players to contain/stop his RPO threat due to his elite speed, which should make the Edge vulnerable. George Pickens definitely requires 2 people especially in a Red Zone situation due to his speed, height, hands, and body control, but only with an accurate passer. I also think with Washington's size requires 2 people too.

So with Pickens out wide on the strong side, and I'd put Muth out there with him too. Washington as the TE to set the strong side with Pickens. Single back formation from shotgun. Have Muth go in motion to hopefully drag someone or shift the defense to the weakside of the field. Muth could motion to the slot for an emergency relief valve or keep going to the weak side receiver.

Snap the ball and start to roll JF to the strong side. Maybe do play action. Look for a shovel pass option on the Edge with Warren or Harris every time. Keep rolling, look for Washington with a skinny post or a short curl with a strong basketball post up move and a fastball from Fields. Keep rolling and look for Pickens in the corner for a 10' high laser pass, with enough green to get pushed when he jumps. Or JF keeps rolling to the sideline/end zone.

I just don't see how you can stop this Red Zone trio, because you have 3 players that take up 2 people if we are being honest. That is 6 people tied up with 3 Steelers.
  • Fields: Edge has to absolutely set the edge with Fields, or they have to put a spy on him. IMLB won't have the speed. Secondary...go right ahead.
  • Washington: He is too big. Get him the ball after 3 yards and you will have 8 when he falls. Will the IMLB be spying Fields or covering Washington? IMLB can't cover Washington. You could also run this with TE opposite Pickens, and just run an immediate Drag to Picken's side to provide shadow receiver for Fields' roll-out
  • Pickens: Pickens will keep the secondary from cheating, especially if he is by himself...just sprint to the corner, and 2 or 3 secondary members will be shifting. Throw it high and make it automatic.
This doesn't solve the rest of the field, actually getting to the red zone, or refs not giving us "get out of jail free" cards to the red zone.

Thoughts?

It's a passing league and good defenses will begin shutting that shit down.

Exactly. You have to get to the redzone first before you can do anything there.

I think the Jets will be a tough match-up for the Steelers. I won't be surprised to see Russ Wilson make an appearance if Fields has another bad passing day.

RPO with a Steelers QB post Ben...what was I thinking. Shovel pass is inside the numbers passing. Curl and drag is middle of the field stuff.

Yea I think JF should and could remain a good RZ weapon.

The issue is between the 20's. He's not been great

Maybe they could have redzone formations featuring both Russ and JF? Use Fields as a RB / WR, and he's a threat to throw. He'd be more dangerous out there than Van Jefferson. I wonder if Fields is open to being Slash 2.0?

I know platooning hasn't traditionally worked in the NFL but the case for it here is strong, Fields in situations where QB run option is in play and Wilson between the 20s on longer yardage downs.

That would take some innovation and balls, and we know Tomlin lives in his fears.

I still think Wilson should start and you don't lose a starting job to a B level sub.

Fields has had one very good half of football (2nd quarter Colts). Other than that he has been ok at best. Thr Jets defense is pretty good, and the offense can score points quickly (particularly if Adams starts strong). My guess is this game will send Fields back to the bench. But for a generous roughing call to negate his Interception, I think Russ would have come in against the Raiders.

You can't coach speed and you can't coach the size that D Dub is. If he just gets into the endzone and turns around it has to be an unstoppable play from the 10 yard line in. Throw it low and the defender has to go through his massive body to get to the ball. Throw it high and which LB/DB is outjumping the 6'7" guy for a high point?

Orlovsky does have a point about Fields turning negative plays into positives with his legs given the sorry state of the OL. Still, I would like to see Russ out there on at least some obvious passing downs.

Pittsburgh is 4-2 with Justin Fields. But Wilson’s calf is fully healed and now he gets his shot.

Fields doesn't have any touch, and doesn't seem to know it and work on improving it, even at five years in the league.

He blasts that ball out there and no one expects it to hit that hard.

I don't think he has much of a brain for the game.

Yeah, Fields isn't going to get the moonball Flacco DPI calls since everything is a fucking cruise missile. It's beautiful when it works, but not always the best strategy on deep go or jump ball routes.

First off: having a spy on Fuelds is not going to work unless your spy is a crazy athlete. You’re better off blitzing that guy up the middle and trying to get Fiekds before he steps out of trouble. You saw Vegas try and use a spy in the red zone and the spy didn’t even come close to getting to the edge before Fields scored.

Oh, I can't wait for this to happen. When he gets sacked, and fumbles and Jets scoop up for a TD. I don't want to hear one negative peep from the Wilson fan club. He's immobile, he's a sitting duck behind this O-Line. The plays JF makes with his legs when the pocket breaks down cause O-Line is getting smoked, Wilson cannot and will not make. He's gonna go into the fetal position more than once. I guess we will see.

Maybe Russ will suck, but the Steelers are going nowhere with 150 passing yards a game from Fields. I don't give a damn about Fields' running ability. He's like a WR who's a great blocker but has bad hands and runs shitty routes. The Cowboys game demonstrated why Fields isn't the long term answer as starter, and the refs saved him from being benched against the Raiders. Chances are neither Wilson nor Fields will be with the Steelers next year unless Fields takes back-up money

Wilson definitely has a lower floor but higher ceiling. It's a gamble. For once, Tomlin isn't living in his fears.

I think it’s funny that there are people that still think that the offense is going to change just because of the QB.
Russ Wilson is gonna be running the same bland offense that Justin Fields did, and Mason Rudolph did, and Mitch Trubisky did, and Kenny Pickett did, and 39 year old Ben did…

Sure, but different QBs got different results under that system. The offense was functional with Mason (and with Old Man Ben in the 4th Quarter). It was totally dysfunctional with Mitch, and almost as bad with KP. Fields hasn't been as good as Mason, but he's been better than KP or Mitch.

If Russ can outperform Mason and Old Man Ben, and if the defense and OLine can get healthy and stay healthy, and the Steelers make a move for another WR before the trade deadline, then the Steelers might actually be a top 5 AFC team come the playoffs. It wouldn't take much- maybe a top 15 offense. This is a down year for the AFC in general. It would be nice to see a playoff win or two.

In other words, I risk the lower floor of Russ to have the chance at a higher ceiling and try to make a run with this defense while we still have Watt, Minkah, Cam, etc. I don't think Fields does much more than help achieve NHALS.

And I don’t believe 36 year old Russ Wilson does either. The results are going to be the same. No playoff wins in 8 seasons. Ben didn’t fix that, Rudy didn’t fix that, Russ isn’t fixing that!

I agree on your Raiders comments, but the Cowboys game was definitely not a QB issue. That was all Tomlin and Smith IMHO.

The BS of waiting for the second half to actually start the game. The pitch toss and then a FG. What a joke!

That picture of Russ’ arm looks soft like the dough used at an OIP restaurant! I don’t know how the hell he expects to do well carrying that much extra wait and weight. He will be waiting while his body gets up to 5.2 forty speed by the looks of it.

With JF, Pickens and Washington you should be able to put together an offense.

Justin Fields turns the corners by accident…you just can’t have that type of speed sitting on the sideline waiting for Russ.

You're probably right, but I think there's a better chance of catching lightning in a bottle (slim as that chance might be) with Russ, who is a real passer and needs a Warner-esque late cateer comeback story to secure a spot in the HoF, than with Fields. In all likelihood Russ will go out and suck, and this season will look like the 2019 Mason/Duck year. But I at least want to see Russ have a chance to fail.

I don't see how you can absolve JF from blame for the Cowboys debacle. He had less than 160 combined yards against an injury-riddled Cowboys defense. Sure, coaching wasn't great, but Fields' ineptitude contributed to that wasted first half.

As for Fields' speed, who cares? Speed is the most overrated trait for a QB. If the QB can't be a consistently effective pocket passer, then the fact that he is fast is basically irrelevant. Run-first QBs don't win over the long term. I think it would be interesting to see Fields play in a Slash 2.0 role to best make use of Fields' strengths, but that doesn't seem likely.

Agreed on the speed thing. It might add a little more dynamic to this offense given how poor it generally is, but JF is not a good pocket QB. He feels pressure and reacts when it isn’t there. He got his ass kicked in Chicago, so I get it, but that means nothing now.

Look at our starting field position on our scoring drives in the Raiders game. It isn’t not going to be that easy going forward. That was freakish amount of turnovers and fortunate bounces (Warren hops on a terrible swing pass that should have been recovered by LV; LV doesn’t challenge a possible TD then fumbles next play on the half yard line).

This offense needs to get its shit together. It’s more and more of the same with Fields.

I understand what you are saying but there have been a decent number of plays that Fields has just overthrown guys and missed open players for no apparent reason.

here is a 4 minute clip on X that shows every pass play that fields had even if they turned into runs.
https://x.com/TommyJaggi/status/1846206126443954199
6 good passes
1 bad read and throw
1 Jones blocks nobody and takes off up the middle
1 takes off running
1 great throw
1 good play but not what the play was supposed to be.
1 terrible overthrow (Really bad)
1 terrible overthrow
1 pocket breaks down move up and a terrible overthrow
1 checkdown 3 yards
1 checkdown 4 yards
1 rolls left throws a seed to the left side perfect throw
1 empty middle QB draw an excellent run
1 good read mediocre pass could have had more loft to allow WR to run under.
1 abortion of a reverse flea flicker (all negatives on coaches) lucky Fields didn't fumble So JF2 gets an A on the play.
1 terrible read and throw not sure what he was seeing
1 terrible throw INT still don't know what he was seeing definitely know what he was not seeing. (Terrible roughing call but not my burden)
1 broken play runs left for a good gain. no idea what he was seeing but it did not appear anyone was coming open.
1 terrible play design on the fake plunge 2 TE route that Fields speed turned into a TD
1 terrible read and throw that should have been intercepted on the 2 point play.
1 terrible high-heat screen throw that is a lateral and a fumble that Warren pulls out of the pile.

1 illegal forward pass. should have checked down to Najee or just tucked his head and taken off for the pylon or endzone line.
1 bootleg left somehow gets the ball out of bounds whilst doing a pirouette with defenders pulling at him.
1 fail by the OLine sacked in less than 1.5 seconds Glad he didn't fumble
1 great check down to D Dub for a first down with second effort and sheer size
1 legs save him from shit-blocking and turns into a very nice gain.
1 perfect strike down the middle
1 terrible throw could have been picked not sure what he was seeing
1 decent throw to Pickens in garbage time better placement and they get 14 his TD and happy meal toy.
1 perfect throw that Pickens drops.
1 drop back and takes a sack.

The good is very nice the bad is hard to comprehend.

The plays in Blue were or should have been turnover. If the roughing the passer call doesn't get called there is a chance Russ plays the second half in Vegas.

Wow…I don’t know why you felt the need to do that, but that is quite the breakdown. Thanks.

My comment was not about Fields and Wilson. It was a response to those posters that think the insertion of Wilson into the lineup means the offense is going to open up and attack all over the field. We have years of evidence suggesting it will not.
