Thoughts on Jets

Post by Stosh-67 » Thu Oct 17, 2024 2:58 pm

The Jets have assembled one of the most talented offensive skill-set of players in the league.

This will be our tuffest match up to stop so far this year.

Rodgers is slowly knocking off the rust.
Garrett Wilson is an always open WR, He has 41 catches on the year. Pickens, Austin and Van Jeff have COMBINED for 44.
3 TDs on the year for Wilson.

His old buddy Lazzard, at 6'-5" is a tuff #2 and is in sync with AA. He has 5 TDs so far.
If you put all the TDs the Steelers WRs have into one pile, group them together, link them...........they have COMBINED for ONE.

And now another one of his Nsync boys in Adams, who connected with Rodgers for many years via telepathy.
Hoping their Ben to AB harmonious like connection needs a few weeks to click.

Add in Breece Hall coming off his best game at RB, not to mention how they use him in the passing game.
In this past Buffalo game, he had 5 catches for 56 yards, including a play where he zipped down the right hashes for a 26 yard gain, probably 20 yards in the air.

Their play design, motion, deception, is quiet foreign to how football is played offensively between the Alleghenies and the Ohio River.

The defense will be asked to work miracles once again.
They will be hard pressed to rely on grabbing 2 picks, getting a sack strip or block a FG or Punt.

Hoping Highsmith and Herbig are back, or at least one of them.
Both of those guys should be able to get around LT Smith once or twice to hit home.

More importantly, if one of those guys on the right side can get back and provide pressure or art least a presence,
Then TJ should have better success getting to AA.
My source told me it was the first game since 2018 that TJ did not have a pressure?

If both of the H & H boys are back on the field, I am hoping to see some sets with all 3 on the field....and allow TJ to roam a bit, pick some gaps and come from different angles to get thru or around the line. Vanilla is predictable and easy to defend. Now if its vanilla and you come across an almond, ch. chip or M&M in your ice cream, then its always a nice surprise that brings pleasing results.

Heyward and Benton need to build off their best game of the year. Pressure up the middle and in ones lap will probably be the best defense for a 40+ QB. Larry OG needs to be told the season started 6 weeks ago.

BTW, Cam shares the team lead with QB hits at 10 with TJ

Adding to the need to pressure up the middle.........
I would like to see some blitzing and stunts up the gut. Put the Center and Guards into AA's lap.
Elandon is pretty quick sin a straight line....and brings the #s and hammer to bust thru.

Queen and P. Wilson need to continue making tackles. Queen is getting better every week.
Wilson is 4th on the team in tackles in tho he is at a 56/44 % snap split with Roberts.
This kid is still digesting NFL football, as I think he has some impact plays heading his way.

Porter, and Jackson will have their hands full.
Minka and Elliot will need to help in the passing game more than any game this year, hence the importance for the DL and LBS to kill the run and be sure tacklers.

The wild card this week will be the nickel back. Will Beanie be exposed?
He has been on the field 67% of the snaps in 2024.
This would have been a good week to get Sutton back on the field.

Edmunds may get more play again this week, as his snap count has gone from 12, to 14, to 24%, as I verified this with the nutty Snap Count thread guy. The Steelers been playing alot more of 2 down linemen sets and seems like Edmunds is taking some of that extra time onto the field.
Can he get on the field more often to allow Minka and or Elliot to produce some impact plays?

ST's has been pretty good so far in 2024.
Can we get a blocked punt, blocked FG or XP?
Can Loudermilk get every inch of his 6'-7" up and tap another kick.

Can we double the gunners and provide some room for Austin a pun or two?

The offense will need to score 20+ to win. Maybe 24 will be the target for Tomlin.

Probably the best defense for defending the Jets and stopping all their weapons will the Steelers offense.
Control the clock, run the ball, show something in the passing game.....will Russ do that?
Show some creation, scheme for separation?
WR screen for Austin as opposed to Austin blocking for a WR screen.
Austin in motion.
A few simple 7 yard curls to Pickens...... will have the CBs bit on a double move.
Have the WR coaches worked on his routes and patterns and footwork?

Hoping Najee builds on his best game in a Steeler uniform?
A few here are down on Warren, so hoping he continues to head towards healthy and that spark comes back.
Utilize him in the passing game some more.

And I will be in the house for this game.
Me and my two boys....
Dragging along 3 of their friends, who will be wearing Green.
Sorry

Hoping its a better SNF than my last game.

As far more on the offense.....
I will hand it off to..............

Jets will be an interesting team the rest of the way.

They have issues in pass protection. They are 28th in rushing yds per attempt but ran it effectively last game.

When Rodgers gets the ball out quick into the hands of their playmakers they are going to be difficult to defend.

If they had a wall in front of Rodgers, they would be a serious threat for the Lombardi, IMO

Rodgers took a beating last game (for today's standards) and looked old taking it. They really need to keep their old QB upright. The addition of Adams should help in terms of more targets open on quick routes.

I wonder if pass protection when needing to get the football downfield will be their undoing in the end, even if it's deep in the playoffs.

Best way to neutralize the Steelers defense is to get the ball out quickly. Don’t give Watt and Highsmith time to wind up. Rodgers is a master at that.

Our corners will be tested. And we will need to score to win this game.

Thanks for the write-up Stosh. If the friends wearing green get obnoxious just tell them about the Jets bar in the basement of the stadium with 300 foot TV screens.

I haven’t seen the Jets since they were on Hard Knockers and I have been lax on getting up to speed on our opponents.

I now know what to expect more or less!

Rodgers is still an excellent QB and most certainly will be looking for quick slants and the like to offset Steelers pass rush.

Gonna be a tough game to win. Well actually most are with dipshit leading this team into battle.

The Jets have a tough defense and a potentially dangerous offense that is just starting to come together. This game looks much tougher than it did a few weeks ago, and even Tomlin seems to be aware that it will take more than. 17 points to beat the Jets.

Yes it does.
Jets could easily be 4-2
Boz on that team and they are certainly 4-2

Roman Wilson dealing with Hammy.
What did he do…trip over the sideline?

I saw something about Najee and ribs.

Hidden key to this matchup:

Jets have the personnel to stop run and tackle the catch and minimize damage... but they have uncharacteristically struggled with missed tackles this year. If they make tackles, it's going to be hard to run the ball on them. If they continue missing tackles, Steelers could run it nearly as well as they did last week.

According to Chat GPT:

Interim coaches often face a challenging task when they step in mid-season. Historically, their performance can vary widely. Here are some insights based on recent data:
First Game Performance: Interim coaches tend to have a decent record in their first game, with a 18-12 straight-up record since 2010. This suggests a possible initial boost or “new coach bump.”
Two Weeks In: The performance of interim coaches two weeks after taking over can be mixed. While some teams experience a short-term improvement, sustaining success is more difficult. For example, interim coaches who took over by Week 12 have a better record against the spread (ATS) and straight up (SU) compared to those who took over later in the season2.
Long-Term Success: Historically, only a few interim coaches have led their teams to the playoffs. Notable examples include the 2021 Las Vegas Raiders and the 1961 Houston Oilers3.
Overall, while interim coaches might provide a short-term boost, maintaining that momentum over several weeks is challenging.

I am betting there will be a let down low energy game!

Last time Rodgers played in Pittsburgh he displayed some unreal toughness. He got blasted by Lawrence Timmons early in the game right up underneath his chin, and instantly popped back up. It was clear he was trying to demonstrate himself as a worthy successor to Brett Favre. He took 50 sacks that season ('09), and led the entire NFL in that category.

There is not a lot for him to prove in New York at this point, so if the Steelers can get pressure and make him feel it, maybe he does not showcase the same will he did when playing for Green Bay.

It would be great to get Highsmith back for this game.

On the other side, the Steelers DL and LBs played their best game last week vs. the Raiders. There was appropriate usage of 3 down lineman, and that helped to shut down the running game.

NYJ are not an overly impressive rushing attack, but Dallas is currently ranked last in yards and ran the ball rather effectively at Acrisure two weeks ago. No guarantees plugging the rush lanes will be easy.

Quite a bit of focus for this game will be on the quarterbacks, but which ever team runs the ball the best is likely to get the win.

Najee Harris had one of his best games last week and Jaylen Warren is another week healthier. It will be another starting offensive line combination in Pittsburgh, but maybe Justin Fields can find a way to make a contribution someway somehow that continues to build upon what he has done the first 6 weeks of the season.
