Not really into "athletic" QBs, which is really a code word for QBs who aren't great passers but make up for it by running.K_C_ wrote: ↑Wed Jan 15, 2025 11:40 pmFields would be my pick to the next year's starting QB for a few easy reasons.
1) He's still young and is one of the best runners in the NFL. Obviously has a cannon for an arm.
2) Either Fields develops into a special player or the Steelers have a season that many here have wanted them to have for a long time. A 4-13 type of season which could put them into position to draft (hopefully) the next franchise QB.
Also, I think it was @bradshaw2ben who said this, but I could be wrong on that but someone said that each year the Steelers should roll the dice on an athletic QB, no matter the round, until they hit paydirt.
I happen to agree with that plan and would take, if he were there in either the late 2nd or 3rd, Jalen Milroe. Sure, dude is a lot like Justin Fields but nearly everybody (me included) said the same thing about Lamar. "He's too inaccurate a passer and will never develop enough in that area to be elite." I'm sure I wrote something like that several times after the Ravens took Jackson with the last pick in the first round.
I think I might have been wrong on that one.

Defense and running with Fields can carve out 9 wins, which is the real goal of the franchise. A winning team and job security for Tomlin.
They have two real options at this point.
1. Identify a QB in the draft and trade way up to get him
2. Tear it down and rebuild. Fail for a season and get the QB next year.
I’d roll with Kyle Allen this year, trade off any older guys I can get a premium pick for and start over. Obviously flushing Tomlin now or after next season, if you will, is the goal.
Option 1) No way the Steelers have the draft capital to trade up high enough to grab one of the top QB's in this draft. It's a guy like Milroe early, or dudes like Will Howard, Kurtis Rourke or Kyle McCord later. End of story. They are not coming away with a day one starter this April. No way. No how.Steelperch wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2025 2:57 amThe Steelers can’t score with the top teams. Justin Fields couldn’t score points here or in Chicago. He isn’t an NFL passer. Thank you. Justin Fields is a tremendous athlete who sucks at processing the game and throwing the football with any touch.Steelperch wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2025 2:57 amThe Steelers can’t score with the top teams. I remember you blasting LJ and wanted no parts of drafting him. I actually wanted LJ and was PO'd when they took Terrell EdmundsK_C_ wrote: ↑Wed Jan 15, 2025 11:40 pmFields would be my pick to the next year's starting QB for a few easy reasons.

You could be right that I blasted Lamar, but I don't quite remember things that way (if anyone has a way to access the draft talk from that time period, please post a link) because I remember being in the camp of; "no way they even consider Jackson, he'd be a perceived threat to Ben and I don't see any way they'd do that."gojira5150 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2025 5:24 pmI remember you blasting LJ and wanted no parts of drafting him. I can't believe we passed on LJ to draft Edmunds, Unbelievable. I see what you are saying about Milroe. Taking a flyer on him late 2nd or 3rd is not as horrible I guess. Only issue I have is Jibba has Not and will Not develop a QB.
Harbaugh installed LJ halfway thru his rookie season and changed the offense on the fly to accommodate for his unique skill set. Jibba could NEVER do this as it takes coaching
Actually, you are correct. Others were blasting him and did not want him. Too bad Jibba (Colbert) did not want to upset Ben. Packers have no issue with that and have set them up for over 2 decades of amazing QB playK_C_ wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2025 6:07 pmYou could be right that I blasted Lamar, but I don't quite remember things that way (if anyone has a way to access the draft talk from that time period, please post a link) because I remember being in the camp of; "no way they even consider Jackson, he'd be a perceived threat to Ben and I don't see any way they'd do that."gojira5150 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2025 5:24 pmI remember you blasting LJ and wanted no parts of drafting him. The reason I don't remember hammering Lamar (admittedly, I NEVER thought he'd turn into a superstar) was because I remember having disagreements with folks here (Jeemie for sure was one of them) who were in the; "No chance Lamar develops as a passer" camp, while I can vividly remember telling people; "Hang on here....if this dude figures out the passing thing at all, the league is going to be in big trouble."
Jackson showed some signs, obviously not consistently, of superb passing and I remember being pretty fucking worried he'd develop and others assuring me that wasn't going to happen.
I'd love to see some threads from the draft when Lamar was chosen and from when he took over for Flacco. Don't know if those would still be accessible.
