Happy 4th o' July Asshats!

Post by franco>madden » Fri Jul 04, 2025 9:28 pm

Just stopped in at our local SoCal fireworks stand to augment the arsenal lined up for tonight with a few smoke-bombs to start off the festivities for late afternoon enjoyment.

A big Pacific Islander-looking fellow comes out of the shadows of the stand to wait on me, I can now see he's rocking a *correct* Polamalu 43 Steelers jersey.... I tell him Troy and Franco are probably my 2 favorite Stillers of all time .... He says, "That's my Uncle!"

We talked for several minutes about the glory days and he asks me if I'm from Pittsburgh (I am) and I ask him if Troy still has a house out here (he does). I also tell him about my fan-board buddy "Swissvale" who was in the house for both Troy's playoff pick-6 and Franco's Immaculate Reception, and reported they were the 2 loudest crowd roars in Pittsburgh history! (although in retrospect, I wonder if Maz's Yankee-killing, world series-winning walk-off homer might've been in the running as well?)

So yeah the current Pittsburgh sports scene is pretty bleak but at least there's some great folks and memories out there and maybe even some future hopes, once the current clowns running things move on or die off.

Anyways Happy Independence Day everybody, don't drink too much and if you're lighting stuff off, be careful you don't "put your eye out!"

Very cool, thanks for sharing.

I was in the house for that Pick 6. Sheer pandemonium! My buddy and I bring it up every trip to the Burgh for a game.

Happy 4th!

Great story & great happen stance just to make the day a bit more special. To all yinz; have an extra beer or beverage of choice today. Most of all be safe & give a hug or high five to everyone around you.

Look forward to the upcoming Super Bowl run with all yinz ass hats this season.

IMO, for pure decibels, the loudest crowd roar in Pittsburgh’s history has to be Mario’s game winning goal in game 1 of the 1992 Stanley Cup Finals against the Blackhawks.

Thanks for the reference, Franco!! Those were two magical moments. Speaking of the Maz homer, I know I've told this story before, but my dad COULD have been there for that one. One of his customers offered him tickets for either game 6 or 7. As the Yanks were heavily favored, Dad said, "This series'll never go 7 games," and chose game 6. So he and my mom saw the Bucs lose 12-0, and he was back cutting hair in his Swissvale barber shot when Maz hit the shot heard round the world.

Oh, 65 years later, my brother Tony remains pissed that Dad took Mom to the game instead of him!
