To me, I don't know. For some reason that is the exact moment the worm turned and where everything started.
Year before. AFCC appearance
Going into that game. Realistic shot at 1 seed.
Next week Jesse James.
Few weeks later Blake Bortles starts the real playoff futility
Next year Le'Veon holds out. AB starts going downhill.
Next year Ben shreds arm
Next year Covid Smoke and Mirrors season
Next year one armed Ben drags us into playoffs. Get blasted by KC.
Pickett gets drafted
Franco dies
Three straight years of lather rinse repeat with QB JAGS
along with other stuff that I have left out. Just seems like his injury was where everything turned and organization has never recovered
Sigh
Ryan Shazier injury--- The negative turning point bringing us to the present day

Shazier hurt and led to a lot of bad decisions being made since. He was a legit All-Pro top end talent at ILB. A generational type athlete who could have made the HOF. His loss definitely led to the end of that season and didn't help mattes any, but there have been countless decisions made since that had nothing to do with that injury that helped get us here. It looks like a turning point on paper, but this is just a shit show created by giving in to one man's ego.
I honestly don't think Colbert was even really calling the shots the last few years when everyone attacks his drafts. With Cowher, Colbert never whiffed on a first rounder. Continued for a while under Tomlin, then things just went to shit in the last quarter of his tenure. Then we got Khan - a nepo hire, a cap guy who other teams interviewed and routinely passed over for GM jobs in the role.
We've never gotten any sign that there was a real power struggle. I don't think Colbert is the type to engage in that shit, but slowly but surely Mediocre Mike just got more say and he went along and this is the end result. Not that Colbert maybe didn't have a bad decision of his own here or there when he did have a say, but it wasn't his show anymore.

Go back further to Mike Adams driving from Columbus, OH to Pittsburgh to tug on Mike Tomlin’s heartstrings for failing a drug test at the combine. They then took Adams in round 2 over future HOF LB Lavonte David. This forced them to waste a ton of picks on LBs:
3rd on Sean Spence
1st on Shazier
1st, 2nd, and 3rd for fucking Devin Bush
Then gave $41 in free agency to Patrick Queen
That’s like two drafts with of top picks to fill a hole that they could’ve filled by taking Lavonte David in round 2. All of that fucking wasted resources on a damn linebacker! No wonder Ben didn’t have a line or defense the back half of his career.

Yeah that Shazier injury sure caused a domino effect.
Lot of sketchy personnel decisions under the TomBert regime.
Burning a 1st round pick on Minkah to keep NHALS alive.
Choosing Muth over ALL-PRO center Creed Humphrey thus sticking an over the hill Ben with crappy ass Kendrick Greene.
Countless examples
If you examine Colbert’s last few drafts, MAN they’re gawd awful.
Dude doesn't get enough hate
Kenny Pickett?
IN ROUND 1?!?!
I’ll NEVER forgive myself for scaring my beloved dog (RIP) yelling at my TV after that nightmare pick was made
I mean if a casual like me KNOWS a player sucks WHY can’t well paid "Football men" see it??
Just a BRUTALLY BAD pick that spiraled them into washed up Vet QB mode.
Yep
Tomlin
Colbert
ROONEY
The human element
Philosophically?
The painfully conservative U shaped/caveman offense and a defense reliant on turnovers designed to keep the NHALS streak alive was their playoff undoing.
Every organization needs a few down years to restock their roster and at least have an opportunity to find that rare franchise qb.
And oh yeah the Tomlinisms…
…YOU MOSTLY DEFINITELY live in your fears you bug eyed bastard!

As bad as the drafts have been, equally as important has been the shit ton of horrible coaches and coordinators.
Munchak was the exception and he molded a mediocre group into a better than solid O-line. Flores also helped in a vague role but he moved on after a single season.
Beyond that..... Canada, Austin, Fichner, Smith, and the guarantee to Butler that forced out Lebeau were all just mind numbing to experience. Add in dozens of position coaches that have been below the line if you will, and we're left with a mix of under performing players.
The sad thing here is that if you look at everything in its entirety, there's almost nothing beyond NHALS the is even remotely acceptable for a franchise that purports itself to ser the standard.
